2011 5.7 with 180k miles. Rear main seal or oil pan gasket leak. Drop transmission for rear main or pull motor for oil pan? Does that sound right?

I’m not an expert, but I think just unbolt trans for rear main seal. Mine leaked twice on my 2010 but Toyota fixed it both times. For the oil pan, can’t you get to it underneath by just dropping the pan? I wouldn’t think you need to pull the motor for that.

Thanks Tim, My understanding is that the oil pan sits just above the cross member and can’t be dropped from below. I was hoping for a little clarification.

There are 2 parts to the oil pan, the lower stamped steel pan can easily be removed without removing anything else, while the upper cast aluminum part of the pan is a much larger job with the crossmember in the way.

You really want to be sure of where the leak if from before ripping into it.

    Thank you for your response.
I have it scheduled to have the rear main seal replaced because of the age. Do you know if the technician Will be able to see if the upper oil pan gasket is leaking while the bell housing is off?

Did you happen to get a price quote on replacing the upper pan seal? I’m chasing what looks like a rear main but I have a sneaking suspicion the upper pan seal may be leaking too. Thanks
