so I took my truck in to have 4.88's put in and the guy calls me today and tells me they got it done but while testing it out and stuff it was whining while coasting. He says he's gonna break it down and make sure nothing is wrong with parts or anything but he did do it by the numbers he tells me. I forgot to ask him which axle it was coming from but yesterday on an update call he said guy was having problems pressing the bearings or something. I've read a lot of other posts about different vehicles and some say bearings, others say backlash, I have no idea about this stuff. I bought the gears through them so that's a good thing, but what if he tells me it is what it is and there's nothing he can do? What can I say besides this just turned into a victim or volunteer situation?

I'm surprised though he is diving right back in. Usually shops include break in instructions and ask you to come back in after 500mi of driving to exchange the diff fluid and make sure all is well. Gears might just need to get a little run time for proper lubrication and break in.

I was reading on the noise during break in but did not know about it before I talked to him. Of course now that I hear this I've become a gear expert reading everything on this situation. These guys were recommended by several people and they have a giant ring and pinion on outside window so maybe he thinks it's something besides that. All on his dime, told him I don't want no whining. Also they are Yukon gears

Hey Dave, I have a 2015 4x4 and had 4:88s installed close to a year ago. I also had some slight whine. Mine only occurs on light throttle at cruising. Coasting and acceleration is no noise. Usually around 50-65mph light throttle. It is minimal, but I can hear it. The shop I had install the gears is very well known and the mechanic has been installing for over 19 years. They even went as far as installing a second set and taking pics of the install back-lash etc. Everyone I talked to said it looks like he did everything by the book. The last input they said had to do with 5 cut gears in a 2 cut gear housing. Please keep me posted on your findings too.

I also have the Nitro gears and from what I understand all the aftermarket gears are made in the same factory. I believe our 10.5 diff is different than your 2010.

I would look into pinion depth and or the pattern. Sounds like the pinion is too deep.

Have a picture of it for reference? Going off "the pattern is good" and not having a pic of the markings is just hearsay.

Well, if it is on their dime, make them fix it.

I just don't want him to give me the there's nothing we can do line, I've read some other posts on different vehicles saying no whine after they've had theirs installed. So hopefully he finds it and gets it quiet

I agree, and that would be total bullshit.

I have ran so many different sets of gears and never had one whine unless there was something wrong.

My 02 FireHawk TransAm was really rough on the factory 10 bolts. I could always tell right before I exploded one. I finally gave up and went with a S-60 from Strange Engineering and never worried about the rear axle again.

So I called Yukon to see if they've had any noise problems with the 16 tundras and he said no, then he says that some gears make noise and some don't. Wait what? So I ask him to send me some that aren't noisy, he said he just can't pull gears that aren't noisy. I told him I understand how it works but for some to make noise and some don't is odd. No quality check? He says it's the machinery. So can I send mine back if it turns out to be noisy gears, no he says warranty doesn't cover that. So heads up on this shit. bummed if I get stuck with noisy gears.

Agree, hearing that's how it is with all gears, as long as there is no defects

Ok, finally got my truck back. the guy had the pattern wrong and now no noise. Turned out great. I can feel the difference, and could see on rpms and feel the difference on hills, haven't mashed the pedal yet but when I get past the break in period I will. Now I can focus more on looks

Glad the noise is gone. Guess the pattern wasn't good huh....;)

You did the right thing by taking it in right away before the gears were ruined or just "living" with it. Fuel economy would have paid dearly as well.

Yeah, don't know what pattern he was using, I'm sure it was right if it called for that pattern tho. Also he recognized the sound and tore it back down, his choice, good dudes, would take my truck back there.

Hey Y'all I just had my 5.29 Nitro gears installed the other day by premier west gears and so far so good other then I've noticed when im driving around 50mph i notice a slight whine noise while decelerating. No grinding no droning sound i currently have 100miles on the new gears and I've been babying it trying not to do any long trips. keep it initially 15 min drive stop for 15 min and drive another 15 min for the first 45 miles. Now i drive 30 min and let it cool down. I was just curious if any of y'all have had the same issue?? Thanks!!

My Nitro 5.29’s do the same. It’s coming from the front on mine when I decelerate around 45-40. It doesn’t do it while in 4wd and hasn’t gotten worse or better in 6000 miles. The guy who did mine assured me they were set up perfect and that some gears make noise. I was uneasy with it but so far all is well.

Well that’s good to hear atleast yours has lasted quite a while with no issues gives me hope for mine! I’ll have to try and put it in 4wd and see. But I’m sure once it’s broken in the sounds may not be as loud.

Have your back window rolled down and all the other windows up and while decelerating check and see if it has a slight whine. Let me know how it goes for you! Thanks y’all.
