are there any good airshocks available for us 1st genners? And if so is the ride decent or am I expecting too much? OR...is it smarter to do airbags?

 

Considering the truck is a keeper, add a oil catch can when you do the pcv

The pcv hose goes to intake manifold. The pcv spits hot oil and other contaminants into the manifold. Catch can goes in between and....

 

From what I’ve read about the Catch Can is it is not worth all the added expense and time to do it. Those little pretty cans are expensive and extra work. Plus they get in the way. Some engines they are worth doing but not all engines. This is what I remember from the studies on it.

Main thing is making sure your PCV Valve is working.

 

I paid $35. If it actually keeps oil out of my intake manifold then I'm good with it. There are different types and it can get complicated and expensive but keep it simple.


Edit: I wouldn't bother if I plan on selling the truck in a few years. If I plan on keeping the vehicle long term then yes I will add it

 

I think I will do my own research regarding this topic.

I'm not saying either is right, nor wrong. I want to find what works for me.

Since we are on the topic. Passenger side valve cover has a vent that goes into the intake tube. This vent is most likely the culprit for the gunk in the throttle body. The pcv hose goes into the intake manifold. When I was swapping the injectors I cleaned up as much gunk as possible but the catch can goes in between the pcv side. The unit I have is sealed and I'm wondering if the vented unit could possibly bypass the intake all together. My thinking is to reduce the intake temperature as well as keeping the oil out.

I'm going have to do some research as well

 

For my research I may have to look into Tacoma world studies.

Higher pop density with my engine than here.

Here, not so much. I have struggled for info here. Thats why I haven't done any engine upgrades. Mainly body, lighting, etc.

Bags would be better. Air shocks will put all the stress on the shock mounts.

That said I had a set on a Jeep years ago and they worked.

 

If I had a Direct Injection Engine I’d do it for sure. Our engines are Port Injection so not as critical. Won’t hurt on our engines.

IIRC I was reading one guy with our 4.7L Engine and he said he didn’t catch anything in the summer, but caught lots of stuff in the winter (or vice versa). He took his off for whatever reason.

You catch lots of gookies in your can down there in the Tropics?

 

Couldn't you just run the pcv hose to bottom of engine bay without a catch can? I mean, how much really comes out?

 

I wish I could convince pops to clean his shit off the back porch so I could work on rainy days like this. You learn to be flexible.

Looking good. Hard to tell what that is. Looks like you got it cleaned up though.

 

I’m sure there is a way. The way I see our design on our PCV the gookies will trap up in the Valve Cover where it meets the PCV and leak back down into the little ported area. I’ve been watching a little engine sludge booger grow down in that portion since doing my VC Gaskets.

Remember my VC Gaskets were bad and my PCV was clogged for a few years. Yeah I didn’t pay mind to it with other stuff on my plate. Anyhow, that bad PCV caused a back up a sludgies in the ported area. Which I really had to use quite a bit of Brake Cleaner to remove. I don’t see how a catch can will prevent this action as it will be on the down stream side of things and gravity is already working inside that port not allowing the gookies to flow up.

Now that I’m Felix Unger I hunt stuff down. I have my eye on this booger thats double in size in a year. I might blast it with some PB down the chute and wash it away. Let me see if I can find a pic.

 

I wanna say the piece you quoted is the the rounded bumper filler? The one you and I talked about yesterday. How mine had surface rust?

I'm cleaning all this up so I can do one good clean video of removal, and reinstall.

 

It's a closed loop system so no you can't just dump it. When I was installing the injectors I had taken the throttle body off and cleaned it up and cleaned up inside the manifold best I could without taking it off. The pcv inlet is right at the opening and it's greasy, oily mess. I'll see what the catch can does at the next oil change interval
