Need a PS pump

Hey all, I've been searching for a PS pump as mine has had the whine since I bought it. I recently was under the pickup and found a leak on the rack and pinion...ordered up new parts for under the truck and thought it would be a good time to give the whole system a facelift. Also, I'm looking at a few pumps around the sub $100 mark and read some decent reviews but wondering if anyone here has bought and used a pump in that price range and had good luck? Not being cheap but after all the other surprises lately I thought I'd save a few dollars. Thank you in advance

 

Sometimes that leak is coming from the PS lines seeping by the old/weakened spring clamps. You could wipe the leak starting at the bottom and work you way up the lines to the top side. I replaced my old spring clamps with Stainless Hose Clamps from big box store. There were 3 needed. 2 at the fill rez and one about midway down the hose closer to the steering rack. Fixed the leaks.

I still have a slight insignificant weep at the bellows (separate leak) on my Steering Rack though.


Not sure what to say about the Pump as I’ve never replaced mine. Hard to go wrong with OEM Toy parts that fit perfectly. Double the cost of your $100 budget though.

 

Whatever you do stick with a new pump unless you want to get good at replacing reman ones under warranty.

And stay away from Cardone, I don't know how they stay in business with the shitty parts they rebuild.

 

You have a leak and your pump is whining. It may only be whining because your fluid is low. There is a chance you can salvage the pump if you fix the leak, flush out the old fluid, and get some new fluid in there. If the pump hasn't actually failed yet it's worth trying. We've only seen a handful of people here have to replace their pump so they don't seem to fail that often.

If you do have to replace it, I probably wouldn't go aftermarket.

 

Thank you for the info, I traced the lines as I hoped that was the case, however all the lines are bone dry. It leaking from inside the boot on the driver side. I took a small picker tool and punched the boot and got about an ounce of ATF to come out. I looked at the diagram for replacing seals and quickly started shopping for a new r&p. I'd rather take my chances on a reman vs not getting one of those seals seated properly and starting back at square one. BTW I'm going to put stainless clamps on all the hoses for peace of mind, many thanks!

 

I will hold off on the PS pump til I get the new r&p on there and do a good flush of the system, see if that remedies the pump. When I'm on loose gravel at a stop it's harder than hell to get the wheels to turn and she cries like a wolf in heat so I'm less than optimistic I can save the pump but it's worth a try haha

Funny the cardone is the second most expensive option next to oem...

 

Have you tried changing the fluid? Suck and fill Technique is easy on this if you want to give it a try. New fluid won’t fix your bad equipment, but it will stop a whine from old burnt/depleted fluid.

 

I will run some new fluid today and report back if anything changes. Synthetic worth the cost to run or just regular dex3?

 

Your 05 is Toyota WS? Check your manual.

 

If it Specs DexIII, then go to Wallywurrld and buy some Dex/Merc from Valvoline for $14 a gallon.

Use the Dex/Merc, as it meets all the Specs and costs less. Do a few suck and fills with the engine off. Turn the steering back and forth. And repeat. Drive it for a few days and do a couple more suck and fills to work out the Mojo.

 

I can't wait to hear what my pickup actually sounds like once this whine is gone...sounds like a 99 f150 right now lol

 

Dex III? Are you sure? It's all gone and you can't get more.

 

Flushed the system today and got a heap of sludge out. Seems to be a little less noisy and I have ease when turning the wheel. I'll get the new rack & pinion on next week and flush again, might have caught the pump just in time.

I’ve suck and filled mine many times over the past 2 years. One time I had left the engine running and was doing a suck and fill. Got most of the contents out of the rez and the PS Pump started screaming. I was quick thinking and had the Dex/Merc right there open on ready to pour so that was quicker than running around and turning off the engine.

What resulted was the the filling of the rez immediately quieted, but some sludge boogers blew up and where caught into the rez filter. Do you see things like this? Took about 3 more suck and fills to get all the schtuff.

 

I'd do it 1 or 2 more times unless you're sure you got all the old juice out, just so no nasty shit gets in your new rack.

 

No noticeable boogers just very burnt skunky ATF. I basically flushed it 2 times, I ran it through til the new ATF was coming out then put hoses back on and started the truck, cracked a beer and told the girlfriend to keep turning the wheels for about 10 minutes...unhooked hoses and ran the rest of the new ATF through. I went through 10 quarts and by the end it was coming out cherry red and clean. Commenced on second beer...
