There's too many factors to give a definitive answer. It worked good for you, but on the weekend the wife and I were looking at a new SUV for her and both ways went bad for us- her trade went from $16k to $12k in a month for no apparent reason, and the dealership would not negotiate on price of a new Traverse (GM interest rates are ok, Toyota ones for the Highlander are crazy high and both vehicles perform comparatively). So from our experience it is the exact opposite, we are staying away from buying for another year likely.

Hmm must be a regional thing perhaps? The new truck I bought yesterday was sitting on the lot for 3 months because they were so slow on sales because of the pandemic consequences, but having sat in the dealership for a few hours working out the deal and test driving etc I think business is picking up. While I was there they sold at least 7 other vehicles, but it is also the end of the month, and this dealer tends to work hard to get cars/trucks moving off their lot even if they take a loss on some profit. I would reconsider a Highlander, as I had one and it was such a fabulous vehicle, but I need a truck because I have a house and no husband. I would get your own financing through a credit union and buy the Highlander for sure over a GM, think of which one will last longer and hold resale value! I would also go to Toyota.com and check with your zip code and see what they are offering on highlanders, as the dealerships will not give out that info willingly. If you are trading a Toyota you are likely to get more money trading it into a Toyota dealership. Just my 2 cents. I know trading a Tundra in and getting good value is super easy since they hold resale value so well where as a car or SUV does not. They were also probably less willing to deal because fo that zero interest! You are better off negating a discount on the vehicle and trade, and then getting a low interest rate at your credit union.

Good luck, and I hope you guys eventually get an awesome deal. But PLEASE reconsider the Highlander! If I had my way I would still have mine!

Do you guys think there’s better chance for a deal at the end of month....or July 4th?

Definitely end of month, especially the last weekend of the month on a Sunday!! Obviously that was yesterday, but if you plan on buying real soon I would go tomorrow at the latest, but just be aware stock is super low, but I feel like they might be more willing to give better deals since their sales are probably down. If you don't find the right truck you could always wait until end of month in July. Good luck.

Do this then, if you cannot make it in tomorrow; Call the dealership in am and ask to speak to a sales MANAGER and reference your interest in the green TRD Pro (just be aware they aren't willing to lower prices on TRD Pros as much as other models), and give him your situation if you have a trade and/or money down. If you are paying cash don't tell him that, wait until you have numbers for a trade and the new vehicle. Find time to also go to your local credit union to see what rate and amount you qualify for (and know your credit score!), as you will use this as a weapon when you get to the financing department. Ask him to give you the lowest out the door price and if it's satisfactory, or near satisfactory tell him you will put a refundable deposit on the truck to hold it until whatever day you can come in. The deposit and negotiating over the phone tells him/her you are a serious buyer! Good luck!

This is a good idea I’ll try that. I’ve also already talked to my credit union and they offered 2.99% for 60 months. Toyota told me they are up around 4.5%

Have them try JP Morgan Chase, they are usually fairly low compared to other banks. I just got 2.5, but that was putting 10K down. Good luck let us know how it goes on the phone! Toyota is lying I was going to get 3.19 percent with them yesterday, but that was unsatisfactory so I went with JP Morgan.

It's for the wife, and a Traverse is her dream ride so happy wife happy life I guess. I would lean to a hybrid Highlander if I had $60k CAD just sitting around, but I don't so until Highlanders don't have 5.5% financing while the Traverse is down at 1.99% I think it'll have to be the Chevy. Payments for a low level Highlander were $395 BW while a mid level Traverse were $409 BW including the massive hit we would take on the trade, it's the wife Hyundai Tucson that's the trade in issue - the bottom just fell out of it, we're going to try to private sell it instead.

It was just weird how little negotiating they did on the Traverse, but the salesman did say if it was a Silverado then he could knock $10k off like nothing, so it's all in the actual model how much they're willing to budge.

Would it be worth it to just keep the current SUV until its paid off and then you can more easily private sale it and have a bigger down payment for a new ride? I actually had a Highlander Hybrid LE and paid about 30K out the door if I remember correctly, and it had more bells and whistles then the gas version. The hybrids are more expensive, but as I said they tend to have more.

I am jus telling you, even if its her dream car its junk and may turn into her nightmare! Have you shopped Honda at all?

The wife was looking at Highlanders and Honda Pilots. Ended up with the Pilot Elite, 3rd row was more comfy in the Pilot and the top level Highlander had hub caps and they were not willing to swap a lower trims wheels to make a sale. Both offered a good discount but the Pilot won.

That's far too long for her, it was financed for 96 months I believe, and now in addition to it being cramped and low on power she doesn't trust it because a check engine light came on. It burnt a tad more oil this time between changes (Hyundai says it should go 8000 km but after this I would only go 5000) and threw a camshaft timing code - they suck in oil to manage some timing and I guess it sucked in air at some point and threw the code. I got the code cleared but she just won't drive it now, so she's got my truck as I use company vehicles for work. So that's why we'll just buy it out using a line of credit and private sell now and then pay off the line of credit. Once it's sold we'll save the same amount monthly for about a year and use that as the down payment.

As for shopping now - it's her dream car so I'm kinda stuck. We're still deciding if it has to be new or if it could be lightly used. I'd like to go used and our own financing but we'll see if she'll go for it. I feel like the Pilot is a tad bigger than she needs, maybe the Passport is the right size, I haven't looked hard at it since I thought we were going used and it only came out in 2018 I believe.

There's a lot going on right now with it, so we've backed away and decided to go with 1 vehicle for a bit - provided we can get the Tucson sold. If once my current project is done we need a second vehicle I'd just buy something like a 2008 Camry straight up so we can keep saving for her SUV next year.
