Ah, but you see. You are the exception. You actually do your own work. Most people in general can't say that. Especially people in my, and @Pucks18's age range.

I think the truth is that most Americans in all age ranges just take their vehicles to the shop. It is true that most young people are hopeless with maintenance but there are plenty of Gex X and Boomers that don't turn a wrench. I didn't do my first oil change until I was like 28. My dad didn't teach me ANYTHING about vehicles. He takes his cars to the shop for everything. I've had to teach myself everything by watching youtube or getting help on the forum and I still barely know anything. When I was replacing my CV axles a few weeks ago I was talking to a ~60 year old neighbor and he stated he wouldn't have a clue how to do it.

I really wish we would bring back classes that cover this in high school. The only hands on class I took was woodworking and that was a joke. The teacher barely showed us anything of value.

Without going into details other than JROTC my high school career was a joke.

Teach real world finances, 401k, how to read a contract, basic stuff, fluids, spare tire, etc.

My high school had shop - but if you weren't a greaser they wouldn't let you into the shop. We had all sorts of business class electives - so glad I took typing (keyboarding now?), accounting. Took the business law classes in college. Even did some of that newfangled 'computer programming' in high school - as if these computers will ever take off. LOL.
I got good value out of my parents high taxes.
Dad made everyone learn to change a tire as part of our driving lessons & the first snow after we were driving he took us to a parking lot where we learned to skid/control the car in snow. I recall "helping" rebuild the carburetor on the kitchen table several times (You'd better have that finished before dinner time!) when i was maybe 7+.

Sounds like my pops EXCEPT I was the one taking stuff apart, and then after I'd hit it with a rock, screwdriver, hammer, axe, hatchet, and sledge... I would bring whatever it was I had taken apart to him.

"Hey, I tried taking this stuff apart to learn bout it, and um... i can't get it to go back togever" I was 5?

I've told a few people this over the years but Keyboarding might be the single most important class I ever had. It's why I'm able to type today without looking(for the most part). I work with people that are keyboard peckers and it's absolutely painful to watch. In a profession like mine where everything is done on a computer it kills their productivity.

I'm from New York City and I have family that has never driven a car and some have never owned a car. My father is worth less than tits on a nun. My step father was illiterate and didn't have a driver's license but he was a mechanic. I started helping him when I was about 10-11 buying, fixing and selling cars. When I was 14 I had about 15 cars parked bumper to bumper in the yard along side his pile of cars.
When a neighbor died, I took his license plates and used them till I was about 19. I have stories from that era that people just don't believe really happened. I am not a mechanic but I know enough to get in & out of trouble. Still learning new things every day.

Well. Shot on the new property for the first time today. That was fun. And digging through the barn I found a wonderful old Mcculloch super pro 81 chainsaw. Missing the front cover and recoil cord but it has compression and someone drained the tank. So probably a hundred bucks for parts and I’ll have a vintage chainsaw that will do anything I want (73-77 these were made)

Pops was in town before me.

The full story emerges. That white dodge from earlier drove through 4-8 inches of standing water from all the rain today. received_277706543579371.jpg

WTF? 4-8? with that lift? Do they not have breather mods, intake mods & such in Dodgeland? That should not have put him out of action. Perhaps he was driving like a d*****?

I've been through deeper water than that and he's sitting up a lot higher than me. That's odd.

Never a good idea to drive through water even with a truck. Messes stuff up like Wheel Bearings and Transmissions. Read a Turd Gen Thread last week and the guy drove through water and his truck got funky afterwards. It recovered after changing all his fluids and cleaning the MAF. He was out of town and it was saltwater. He’ll have more problems down the road.

Still waiting to hear back from this guy on another thread.

Looks like it's missing a chain brake too.
Honestly if you're dropping $100+ on it I'd eBay it and spend the cash on a new (or newer used) saw.

The old guys will run but they're heavy and can be a bitch maintenance wise.

Midrange Stihl and Husky saws can be picked up pretty cheap from folks who don't want to clean a carb.

So any of you guys in/near Florida maybe looking for a truck? My son and I are thinking of just selling the 2000 there before he comes home rather than shipping it.

It’s got the chain brake. Found it in a pile. Still hunting for the starter cover. I’ve yet to have a modern chainsaw last. These things were built good. It’s not heavy at all. Probably only a lb heavier than my craftsman at home. Got about 40 trees to take down all together on the property. So this would do it much easier with the high compression beast of a 82cc motor.

Good deal then. I've had my Husky for about 20 years now and the only issue I've had is a new fuel line. It's still got the original plug in it :burnrubber:

I’ll be putting a fresh plug, air filter, chain and obviously the pull rope and cover. She seems to have good compression. I’ll check that later. But without the compression relief closed you can barely turn the sucker by hand.
