We really need the ATF to tell us not to pour liquid fuel directly onto a fire?

Fuel can regulations are a peeve of mine, don’t expect to go back to the type with a pour on one end, vent on the other. Just the other day I ‘modified’ a newer can that was free, new spout & air vent.

Just read the saga of the demise of the Blitz fuel can company, litigation lawsuits from misuse of gasoline. One needs to be very careful starting a brush pile with gas, aware of vapors. Any accidents are not the containers fault.

I’ve seen too many times others do similar things trying to start a fire with gas... it never goes well.

This is an oldie but a good reminder that the invisible vapors are dangerous.

Well, he got his fire going. Seems ‘midwest’ with that cornfield, he should know better.

He wasted way to much gas too, just a little bit. If the brush is seasoned enough, dry tinder alone will get it going. After a small flame, used motor oil has very low flash potential.

I can't believe they got rid of the vents on new jerry cans. Now it's so hard to pour without spilling.

You should still be able to find them. Chinadian Tire has them. I use one of these for my lawnmower gas.

I'm slowly switching over to these though. There are simply no better gas cans on the market. They're expensive but buy once, cry once. They have a vent hole integrated into the cap system.

Hmm, interesting that our local Ukrainian Tire didn't have those when I went.

Might be a 'Berta thing. The CT website shows a bunch of different cans with the vents.

I always build fires. I hate using gas or anything flammable. Makes everything smell real bad for a long time.

Depends on the enclosure. If it's large, I'll do a cabin. Smaller enclosures get a tee pee. Huge ones get multiple squares of cabin.

I've adopted something similar Les Stroud's method. It's more of a pile than a structure. I put down a base of kindling, then tinder, then progressively larger kindling in a pile gapped to allow air flow.

Learned this in the Boy Scouts.
These are the same people who mandated the two handed gas can that no one can work. Designed by people who never filled a gas can in their lives.
