So Toyota has been telling me i need to have my yoke rebuilt as my rear seal on my transmission is leaking. I check the levels every few weeks, it hasnt noticeably dropped, i dont have to add any fluid, and i dont have a pool under my truck on my driveway, ever. just drops. I was under my truck looking around and noticed a lot of fluid has been slung everywhere.

Attached are photos, taken right after driving for about a ½ hour (12miles), of the undercarriage around where the leak is. I wanted to get others thoughts...the quote is $900 to repair. im not mechanically inclined enough nor do i have the tools to take this project on. But making this truck last as long as possible is my goal.

Also, no hard shifts or anything in the tranny that i can tell, but again am not an expert.

Looks like it could be the output shaft seal. Meaning, if the front portion (yoke) of the driveshaft is pulled away/out, there is a seal inside of that cup looking area. $900? I don’t have your estimate in front me, what does it say as far as the parts list?

I understand not tackling something like this. Perhaps get another opinion from a trusted independent shop.

Is that a new drive shaft? Looks somewhat fresh and a different style than what I’m used to. Maybe they messed up something when doing a new shaft?

No list of parts, just stated “rebuild the yoke at the rear seal”

I could call up and ask them more of what they meant by that. Don’t have any shops around here I personally have used or know of people using. Used to go to a mineke and they really screwed me on stuff, so for big stuff I kinda rather pay the Toyota the mark up knowing they know what my truck needs.

No new drive shaft, Im almost wondering if the fluid is slinging on stuff and making it look wet/new/clean.

I’ll look into that. Not sure when I could take it in next so that may be a good option to try now. Thanks!

Is that something could replace without having to rebuild, or worth just having it rebuilt while it’s apart?

My 2006 DC had the exact same drips, it was indeed the yoke that was leaking. Really not very much of a leak, just enough for three or four drops on the driveway after every drive. I was thinking rear sea, I dropped the driveline and could see the seal had been replaced not long ago. Here on the forum the guys said it would be the yoke. I removed the yoke from the driveline, scraped out the hard sealing compound in the hole on the front side of the yoke. Cleaned it thoroughly with carb cleaner and steel wool then resealed it with a two part rubber product used in the aviation world. It’s Chemseal - CS3204 B2 Fuel Tank Sealant. Or from sky-geek
Flamemaster CS-3204 B-1/2 Gray AMS-S-8802E Type 2 Spec Integral Fuel Tank Sealant - 6 oz (3.5 fl oz)
There is B2 and B1/2. B2 takes a couple days to cure but stays flexible for years. Takes a couple tablespoons of it to fill the hole and it really works.
