Slow Leak

So my truck has developed a slow leak. Looks to be coming from the transmission. Dealer ship said it was a loose plug, they torq it to spec and said problem fixed. Yeah right! Seems to me it coming from the seal. Should I be worried? This fix is above my pay grade.

That’s actually the transfer case you’re looking at there. It’s really hard to tell from your picture where the leak is from, but it doesn’t look very oily above the drain plug. I’d suggest wiping it clean, use some brake clean if needed. Then keep a close eye on it for the next week.

 

I wiped it clean a week ago. Smells like gear oil. I looked at pulling the shield off. Looks like I end up pulling the bolt that sandwiches the transfer case. I will climb under it tomorrow and see if I can pull the plate off.

 

Check your fluid level. Refill if needed And Torque down the drain plug.
If all that is ok. Wipe it all down clean. After a few miles check the seal along the transfer case.

 

I took the shield off and found the slow leak. Leak is where the drive shaft meets the transfer case. I don’t have the tools to fix this. Don’t know what causing the leak. I also noticed oil all over the skid plate. Anyone know what my problem is so I can tell my mechanic?

 

Shaft output seal could be the culprit...just spit-balling ideas...

 

That looks to be the culprit. I found a thread a member had started on this very problem. It was shaft output seal. Mine has been leaking for awhile now. Good to know what it is.

 

My slow leak turned into a transfer case pull. Dealership is going to crack open the case and replace all the seals. Then they reseal the case, let cure for 12 hours then fill and load test. Hopefully all is good then. Glad this is under warranty. And will be buying an extended warranty. If I had to pay out of pocket I am guess at least a grand.

Dealership pulled and resealed the transfer case. Truck is still under warranty so that was nice. Very uncommon issue.
