I have a 2016 that says 38 gallon tank, I can usually get about 30 gallons into it so I know it's over the 26 gallons, which is what my buddies 2015 has cause he says he can get about 20 gallons into his.

    That's about right.
I've never put in more than 21 gallons into my 26 gallon tank.
My miles to empty reads 315 when full, but I'm only getting 14 mpg.

That sound right for a 38 gallon. DTE doesn’t actually take you to E on the tundra.

426/13 mpg (guessing) is 32 gallons. That’s about where it is when you fill up a 38 gallon tank on E.

    Question - I have the 38 gal tank on my 2016 SR5.

Im filling up at almost empty or when light comes on and getting anywhere from 24.5 to 27.5 gals at fill-up.

From my last 21 fill-ups my average is 26.5402 gallons to fill or pump shut off.
(thanks to fuelly app for data export)

Seems like I should be getting more gals at fill-up since I have the 38 gal tank.

Somewhere on this site its posted how many gallons are still in the tank when the idiot light comes on
    but I couldnt find it, dont think its 12 gallons though. (26 + 12 = 38)

    Any thoughts ?

Mine consistently takes around 28-29 gallons if I drive it until light comes on. Most I’ve ever put in is 32. These tanks have such a big footprint 5-6 gallons doesn’t go up very high and the pump relies on the fuel level to keep it cool.

Did you read any other posts in this thread or allllllll of the other threads with the same thing? There's even a sticky about it. :frusty:

It's not about gallons for a reserve. It's about how many miles you can go for a reserve. Our trucks have a low MPG. so the reserve would naturally be higher # of gallons.

Plus you have to account for towing and hauling.

If you're getting 9 MPG towing a heavy trailer, 7 gallons isn't going to get you far.

    Not at all.

I play the half tank game anyway so I never pay attention to DTE or anything else.

Yup the 26 gal has about a foot of free space (or more) in front of it behind the midpipe.

AFAIK the rule of thumb is for '16+:
shifter by the wheel, less than what's ideal.
shifter on the floor, fill it with some more.

If I have a 38 gallon tank, what kind of oil should I be using?

I like the Fuelly ap. I dont pay for it, but Its handy as heck.

As I have mentioned before, I dont think the fuel gauge recognizes your 38 gallon tank and thinks its the standard one.

it was a usaf military slang for diesel, at least it was back in the 80's/90's when it was written on the pumps as "MOGAS". me being a noob back then as slick sleeve airman didnt know wth it was.

Here I thought it was for "motor gasoline" to differentiate it from aviation gasoline.

The old guys here still call jet fuel "turbo A".

My manual on pages 588 says a standard size tank is 26.4 gal and a large fuel tank 38.0 gal. Now I'm trying to figure out which size of tank I have.

    This is super simple.

Run your Vin through a Toyota Vin checker for specs, or call a dealership and have them run it.

Or look under your truck and look at the pic in this thread showing the 38gallon tank.

Also at E, the 26 gallon tank takes about 20 gallons.
At E the 38 gallon tank takes about 26gallons give or take.

Welcome! Run your tank to even half empty (half full ;)) and fill up. You'll know pretty quick which tank you have. The larger tank will take around 18 gallons to fill up from half. YMMV
