1st gen tundras! Touch Screen head unit. Who's got what?

I use only a few of the features. Hands free calling is pretty seamless, and I use blue-tooth to play music from my phone. Blue-tooth works ok, but every 5 minutes or so I get a chirp sound. Its seems like a buffer thing, but have no idea what it really is.

 

Were you able to hook up a back up camera?

 

Oh yea. i'll post a video tomorrow. its got a backup camera and a front camera now.

 

What cameras did you use to hook up for the back/front? I just purchased the same head unit and am planning on hooking up a back up cam

I have a Sony XAV-68BT DVD, few years old. but runs well. Has bluetooth and a back up camera. I mounted my camera in my handle so its not obvious. Bought a cheap aftermarket handle, didnt use the OEM, but it broke anyway...

Also grounded the DVD player behind the headunit so i can watch movies while driving

 

How did you mount the camera onto the handle?

 

Took a little engineering but wasnt too hard.

I used a wireless transmitter taped into the reverse light so i didnt have to run wires from front to back. There is a drain hole in the bottom of the tailgate for water (i guess), i ran my wires through that and behind the bumper. They are all taped up back there, but i would recommend some kind of heat shrink or something that is waterproof, as i have had to replace the transmitter due to water. I just electrical taped the crap out of it like a noob.

Then i drilled a hole in a cheap chinese handle off Amazon (which i was replacing due to the original breaking), which sticks so everyone but me can open it....which i kinda like now.

I tried to drill the hole at an angle. I then used a round file to really make it angle down more so it would be pointed down more so than straight out.


To mount the camera, I cut and bent a strip of aluminum, drilled holes in one side for the camera mount, and another on the bent side to line up with the bolt to mount the handle on the tailgate. This took a little trial and error to get the camera mounted just right. bending and unbending.


Points out the rear perfect!

Ha! Thanks! That's perfect. Small piece of aluminum mounted to rear of plastic handle allowed for the camera mounting. That's awesome.

You just saved me about $100 from having to buy a handle with integrated camera. I've got a camera laying around and was scratching my head on how to mount it nicely. Saw yours and thought it was a great location.

No prob! Have fun! it's easily been one of my favorite, not expensive, mods. And helps a ton with backing up!

 

I went super cheap and got a Dual touchscreen from Advance Auto Parts. Retails for $79.99, used a 20% coupon, so got it for low $60s. It fits perfectly and looks great in the dash, using the old harness from the double din (non touchscreen) JVC I ripped out.

The blue interface and on-screen selections look exactly like a newer Subaru interface, so I think they were targeting the early model WRX crowd... or just ripping off the current models.

Only complaint I have is it doesn’t display radio station info (which I never listen to the radio anyways) and doesn’t display info of anything I play over Bluetooth. Aside from that, it connects instantly to my phone when I turn it on and actually sounds great!

Great option for someone that doesn’t want to spend too much on a head unit. I didn’t want to put anything high end into a 20 year old truck... although this truck isn’t dying anytime soon.

 

Just finishing up my stereo/reverse camera install. I posted about it elsewhere so just the short version:

Installed:
Kenwood DMX706s with apple car play (this feature is really growing on me fast)
Rockford Fosgate speakers all around P1675.
Sound damped the entire inside minus the roof

So I put in a powered sub today just to bring in the lower harmonics. Kenwood 8 inch powered sub
Very easy install and it really tied everything together and the sound is much much better now.

I am too tired to go into details but if anyone has questions. I wired it all up as this vehicle is so easy
to take apart and put all these items in. Oh yeah a reverse camera that triggers when in reverse or
when I toggle the newly installed rocker switch on the dash.

 

Looks great! I would love to see your sub and where you put it if you have any pics of that? Planning on replacing my speakers soon with some more powerful ones with a little more punch.

 

Thanks. I have the 8 inch Kenwood powered sub under the passengers seat. I wired it so that the Kenwood HU sub output would provide the signal which required an RCA to speaker wire adapter. (You can just splice into an RCA cable but they are like 24 gauge or some such thing.) Not much to show as it is really hidden and with my truck in the car port I can't even open up the door all the way to give a good pic. (Guess it is time for a new house!)

Anyway the sound is really good. I am still dialing in the crossover (from the HU) and gain. But wow, I think this is really all that I will need for equipment. I have ordered MLV to go the full 9 in terms of acoustic isolation. Also, it is something that I always was curious about and it is an involved but satisfying project. This truck is coming together!

I do like the OEM look and and the volume knob. Which I find quicker and easier to use.
Do any of those Toyota 86 stero's come with apple carplay?

And did you have to modify a lot of wiring to get everything to worK?

wiring is non existant if you want to use the adapters from toyota. just bulkier behind the head unit. and if you want the backup camera or NAV there are 2 wires you need to run.

 

2020 toyota 86 Has car play, but the physical volume knob is gone and replaced with 2 buttons.

Thinking maybe easier to find a deal on a older unit 2017 - 2019 and do they carplay add on. If I find I really wanted that.
So I know what to look for.
I want the head unit from a Toyota 86. Then get a rear camera & plug adapters. Are plug adapters easy to find?
Know one wire to camera . But where does the nav wire got to.

The nav wire would be the speed signal on an 03, I’m not too sure where you can grab it. 05-06 you can grab speed signal from the passenger side kick panel junction in the harness. Personally I’d avoid the navigation and hide use a phone. The nav module for the radio is hard to come by and $800 new.
PAC makes a camera harness that I used original before going to the any time camera setup. The pac harness supplies the camera with 6v power and the connection. The reverse signal needs to be added to the 28 pin and the 6v wire needs to go to the backup camera.

Alpine ILX-W650 here also. I bought the piggy-back amp to go with it but returned a month or so later. Opted to go with the Q-Customs 2x8" form-fit enclosure with a pair of Kicker CompRT 43CWRT81 powered by a JL HD900/5 amp which I've yet to find a good deal on and purchase. Seems like JL may price-fix on their stuff, can't seem to find anyone beating Crutchfield's pricing, and Crutchfield isn't having a sales including it during the last couple of months I've been watching.

Axxess ASWC-1 plug-and-play interface that tucks easily behind this compact head unit. The splash screen at boot is annoying but quick, I just wish they would (if they haven't during the last 4-6 months) release an update that lets you change the splash screen like you could on their other units.

Sound and power is good. Went with JBL components in front and coaxial in rear. JBL's "club" series 6500CAM package has a direct-mount option to replace the factory door tweeter while keeping the stock tweeter grill, no hacking the door required. Just use the one mount (of 3 they give you) with a center-post sticking out. Unbolt stock tweeter, pop its metal cable off, mount the center-post cup in the hole the OEM tweeter was mounted to, no guesswork, the tweeter lands with a good angle for staging. Can share pics of the tweeter mount install if anyone goes this route.

Here's details on how I installed mine - no cutting involved. Didn't even really need to remove any panels, just unscrew and slip forward the gauge cluster trim enough to get behind if IIRC, and drop the plug down in. And here's how I installed aftermarket component speakers in my doors, re-using the factory tweeter grill.

Still love the Kenwood DMX706S that I installed in my 05 DC. Only issue I'm having is my phone randomly disconnects when I'm using Android Auto. I suspect it's the USB flush mount port that I added to my center console. The quality is clearly Chinesium. Lol.


I installed a DMX9706S in my 18 Ford and the wireless Android Auto on it has been excellent.

 

I'd like to see some pics. I assume you had the factory JBL speakers having a limited? I need to replace mine, sound horrible. Did you mount the cross-overs somewhere?

 

I didn't have JBL per VIN lookup at Toyota's website. I had the 6 speaker amplified non-JBL CD/Tape system. Mine had a no-name amp under inside passenger side rear seat cubby, which is now where my Q-Customs/Q-Logic form 2x8" sub box lives. If you haven't seen that box, check it out.

I used industrial velcro to mount the crossovers at roughly the 5:30 o'clock position of the passenger door and 7:30 o'clock position of the passenger door (see red box in last pic below for position) It was necessary to trim some ears off the speaker adapter rings JBL gives in their mounting kit to get a good fit between their slightly undersized speaker and the stock baffle.

Some other minor adjustments were required to avoid hacking the stock connectors or modifying the doors, but it was nothing major and I was able to figure out pretty quickly once the panels were off. Not sure if I have exact pics of what I trimmed on the JBL adapter rings - might've posted on Crutchfield's website in a review. I try to share as much knowledge as possible when possible, here/there/wherever.

But anyway, here's how I setup the tweeters. I'd show pics of how they look after install, but look at any factory pic and you'll see exactly what I see ... just sounds 50% better than stock. There are two screws holding on the backing plate for the stock tweeter, which is drilled dead-center, and the stock tweeter is mounted dead-center of the magnet.

I modified the plastic Bracket JBL gives, then used their center-post threaded cup right thru the factory hole. I remember needing to shave some part down to avoid having the tweeter itself from pushing into the factory grille/cover, but ... once you're in there, you'll figure it out. Just give yourself an +30 minutes on the 1st door, replicate it the 2nd.

PS: Note I used the factory tab to hold the wire in place to prevent slippage. I wrapped with electrical tape to avoid cutting factory housing. Pro tip: You'll need some skinny spade connectors (male and female) because JBL, like the forgetful a-holes they can be with their kits, don't give you any.

Nav can be added technically with the proper extension module. But $$$
As for functionality all you need is the adapter harnesses from Toyota.
This shows how the setup goes. Same wire harness adapters and what not but I used a newer radio.

to add a backup camera you’ll need a PAC rear camera harness and to run a reverse signal wire.

For nav to work you’d need the extension module, a gps antenna from a Scion or chr/ corolla Im. And you’d have to feed the unit a speed signal. Which in 05 and 06 trucks is possible and I’ve done. But it’s a little bit involved. (Unless you tap the wire from the speedo)

 

Actually, I was wondering what the unused two-wire molex plug was behind my factory head unit ... turns out it has both a reverse wire and maybe a speedo wire? If true, no need to bother with running a reverse wire, one is at the back of the head unit already in some models.

I just wish Someone made an adapter you could plug directly in and have a pigtail for each. I have this thing about cutting factory harnesses, it's one of my few OCD issues. Although I'm not sure what exactly I would do with the speedo wire. Surely there must be a fun gadget to use that with somewhere?

EDIT: May as well ask here, since I have my reverse camera already just need to wire it. Where are most people popping the camera signal wiring up into the cab at? Specific cab floor plug or anything?

 

Some trucks have it. Typically double cabs. Most access and reg cabs do not

 

One wire should be reverse, other speed. It was for factory nav.
As for cutting of wires the radio harness is it’s own harness. I added wires to the original harness. No cutting. Just pinning more wires into it.
