    So I have a 04 tundra and a 03 sequoia.

I was poking around the tundra last night and noticed there is like an extra air filter in the air box? Do you guys have this?

I looked at my wife’s sequoia, and it doesn’t have that extra filter thing.

so I ripped it out. Maybe I’ll regret that, but it seems weird to have an extra filter thing. It must have been original because it was mounted in.

What the heck is this thing?
Maybe my truck will breath better now?

Welp now I gotta go look in my truck haha! Never noticed that. Always just change filters and move on.

It's to absorb fuel vapor when the engine is turned off. It won't effect the performance in any way, and will help keep your air intake quieter under hard acceleration.

Toyota inserted those for one reason and only one reason: to start controversial forum threads.

It seems to be working! Quick yank it and throw it out before it happens again!

When I went to remove mine last year it was already gone. I guess the original owner made the same decision.

I disagree! Take it out and burn so the trapped fuel vapors don't get out! For whirled peaches!

It also keeps the gas/exhaust vapors off the (say it with a lisp) Sensitive Mass Air Flow Sensor that seep back from the Throttle Body after engine is turned off. I’ll be keeping mine in place for Carbon Credit build up points.

I installed an intake on my 05 sequoia and stumbled upon that pre-filter thing.

I now see it's use. There is so much crud getting inside my airbox due to my climate (desert). That thing i'm assuming is for extra filtration and to act as a sound resonator. I ended up purchasing a mesh sleeve that goes over my cone filter for extra protection.

My Sequoia has an annoying intake howl when going on long trips uphill or towing heavy. That thing tremendously helps with noise.

I’m actually hoping that I’ll see better MPG with taking it out...

    And adding a KN drop-in.

    It's not.

It does... although that's not its primary function.

I have a K & N "cold air intake" on my 2000 Tundra. All it does is make more noise -- and an annoying noise at that.

If you remove your Tundra pre-filter than all I ask is that you fashion a modified air box and install it on your lawn mower. Offsets Baby. Gotta keep the polar bears and baby seals living long long lives.

I cant say my truck gained overall power, but theres an undeniable power/torque increase under partial throttle vs stock.

Flooring it sees no more HP, partial throttle yes. Did you notice this too or nothing at all?

The K&N was on my truck when I bought it. It's highly unlikely yours is giving you more power or torque at partial throttle -- it's just not designed to do that. At partial throttle, OEM air intake wasn't the most restrictive part of the intake, the butterfly in the throttle was -- and still is. My guess is that the perceived power/torque increase is a result of the increase in intake noise.

I'd like to trade in my lawn mower for a small pack of pigmy goats.

My buddy had some goats like that. Fun to watch but total dicks. They like to ram humans too. He had a giant Great Pyrenees that loved to guard them. I once looked out his window at the goats and the dog was laying down on his side while the goat bounced up and down on him like a trampoline. It was great.

There's definitely an increase. Mine has the VVTI motor. By partial throttle I mean 10-15% light footing it. It pulls through the rpms quicker and smoother. That's not enough throttle to make the intake growl.

Not sure if you're into performance tuning but on several car platforms there are mods that make their HP/TQ increases "under the curve" vs peak power @ redline. So it will show when you overlay dyno sheets that a modification increased HP/TQ by say 15 from 2000rpm-5000rpm but by the time it gets to redline there is only a 1-3HP increase.

Now I'm not saying that's the case with our trucks, I don't have any dyno charts or numbers but there's definitely a seat of the pants difference.
