Extended gas tank

Anyone have or know how difficult/expensive it would be to upgrade to the 38 gal tank?

The range on the 22 gal isn't the best.

 

You're probably better off getting a transferflow 46 gallon, IMO.

If you're not in CA, transfer flow seems the way to go. 46 gallons

That's definitely what I would do. I bet it's cheaper than going with the factory 38gal tank too.

 

My thoughts exactly. I know several members are running it and are very happy.

 

I'd love the extra capacity too. Hell, even with the 38gal it only takes me half a tank to drive from Dallas to Houston. My tank lasts me over a month as it is. Lol.

 

Wow! Can't believe that a tank of gas could last you a month or more. I fill up at LEAST once per week. Granted I fill up on half a tank.

My problem...........I just love driving my truck too much.

That makes more sense then, (since you work from home). However, I don't work and still use more gas, by a mile (no pun intended). I think it's great you can drive it that little, I wish I could. If nothing more than just to preserve my baby. However, I need my daily fix, lol.

 

Lol I know how you feel. When I first got it in December I'd drive it every where. Now I mostly just drive it in the weekends. Got it Dec 2nd and it has about 1700 miles on it. Granted, 500 of that was a trip to Houston and 200 was helping my fiancée move her sister across DFW.

 

How much is the installation typically?
How much mechanic time?

 

I have no idea, honestly. I don't even have my Tundra yet but I lurk around here like a bad fart. I've been researching everything I want to do to mine when I get it and a transferflow tank is high on the list. I'll look around and see if I can find who has one and tag them, so maybe they can give you better insight.

Transferflow 46 gallon is the way to go, install is probably about 4hrs or so. Not terrible, all bolt on. Basically they have step by step instructions that tell you how to do it, I'd personally recommend having 2 people and a floor jack plus other basic tools at a minimum. Jason and I did both our tanks in a day at my shop, though we had all the tools handy and a forklift to help lower/lift the tanks in place(the Transferflow is heavy! 2 people to move it around, and definitely a floor jack to lift and position it under the truck. 2 jacks would probably be even better). Overall the install is straightforward, just need the tools and someone to help so 1 guy can fiddle with connections while the other lifts/lowers/positions things as needed.

Since I'm in Cali I plan on putting together my own 20 gallon transfer tank that is hidden where the spare tire used to be under the bed with a transfer pump and a switch on the dash. I would prefer the 40 gallon replacement like all you cooler states though.

 

who said no transfer flows in commifornia .... I'm a hippie and a tree hugger so I'm cool with it.

 

Whatever you have to do to get rid of the stock 26g tank and get some real traveling distance, do it. Having to stop at every other gas station sucks!
If you're going to have to hide the tank in the spare tire location, why not just do the 46 g transfer flow replacement of the regular tank?

 

Well I guess I should have explained myself better. It's not that I want to hide my extra 20 gallons in the spare tire location, it's that I don't want a transfer tank in the bed. As far as saying eff the Smogging stations and just do the 40 gallon fix, I'd rather not since I don't need to redo it back to the stock tank when finally caught. So for now, I'll just sneak in 20 gallons and add a nice looking skid plate around it and deny the 5th about what's under it.

 

I'm just waiting to hear about someone in CA with a transfer flow passing smog. I just can't see how they would know. But I need confirmation before I go through the trouble.

 

From what I understand. The tranferglow replaces the stock tank. I'm willing to bet if it's installed correctly in CA you'll pass smog just fine. I'm betting they just can't sell it in CA. Yay, guns n gas tanks. If you have a buddy that lives in the US, not CA, ship it to his place.
I'm in AZ, gonna do this one soon. 26 gallon tank sucks. Couldn't get large tank and bench seat.

 

First, it doesn't look stock. It's not made of plastic, big giveaway. Secondly, it hangs below the frame a bit, easily noticeable to a strict Smog station. Thirdly, maybe NorCal is more lenient at their Smog stations but in SoCal there isn't even stations were you can slip the guy $80 extra to get your 1976 Ford Nova Wagoneer smogged anymore. I had 2 places that I could smog a smoker with no issues, now they shake there head and point to the street "Keep movin"

 

I'm not too worried about a visual inspection. The bafoon that does my smog probably wouldn't even notice if the tank was missing. The transfer flow wouldn't make it physically fail the test, right?

 

I have a close friend. Needed a new catalytic converter. He found a couple online but they wouldn't ship to CA. He had it shipped to a family member in AZ. We drove out for a weekend, picked up the cat and drove back CA. Had a muffler shop do a good job installing it like it was stock.
We went to 3 different Smog stations before the 4th station would Smog his Ford Ranger. Each station wouldn't Smog it because they saw the cat was replaced and then continued to verify for a tag or stamp on the cat for 50 state legal. Or some chit like that. We then looked for a station with some young kid at the helm and bingo, shoved a rod up the Rangers pipe and smogged for the next 2 years. This is all before the new Star system where there is instant DMV feedback and cameras randomly verifying that the vehicle being Smogged is the actual vehicle and not a random Jeep Cherokee.

 

I'm pretty sure that the problem is that there is specific CAFE testing that hasn't been passed with this tank to make it legally sold and installed in CA.
So, for this to be a problem, the tester would have to know it's an after market installation and then ask to see certificates. Probably not gonna happen, but probably not worth the risk either.
