So I just picked up a 2011 crewmax and I’m having trouble with my storage options. I want to be able to store tie downs, tow straps, tow hitches, etc but because the back seats slide there is no under seat option. I would put a toolbox in the bed but because there is only a 5.5ft bed I don’t want to sacrifice anymore space. Has anyone come up with any creative ideas or done anything you’ve liked on your truck??

    How about a roof rack?

I have a 2011 Crewmax, and I had the same problems. I have just a little bit of room under my back seats, but not much. I got a couple of sets of dry bags, and I have them stowed behind the seats. In them, I have road flares, a tow strap, 6 tie-downs, a pair of Mechanix gloves, a roll of toilet paper, a flashlight, glow sticks, and a soft case first aid kit. The dry bags keep all of the that stuff from rolling around loose, and the bags keep all of the materials dry and protected (as well as organized). I have a soft case tool kit and an emergency blanket under one seat, and I have two different tow hitches under the other seat, all of which are loose, but nothing moves around or comes out from under the seat. Behind the seats, I keep a 4-way tire tool, a roll of paper towels, a can of window cleaner, all of the dry bags, and a lasso and roping gloves (I team rope, and having the rope and gloves came in very handy one day when I encountered an overturned cattle truck, and the cattle were all over the highway. But that is a story for another time....).

Not a perfect solution, and I am limited to what I can carry vs a bed tool box, but it works for those items, and because the dry bags are soft, I can kind of shape them to fit in that small space. It also allows me to more easily access the jack without having to remove a lot of individual items, only having to pull out a couple of the bags. It also keeps all of the items from banging around and making rattles and other noises.

I was considering having a subwoofer put in on the driver's side behind the seats, but that would compromise what little storage space that I currently have, so I am currently wrestling with that "dilemma". LOL

These are the bags that I am currently using:

This may not work for your purposes, but I thought that I would at least reply with what I am currently doing to address the limited storage space.

I haven’t thought of that. Are there roof racks with more permanent storage bins of some sort?

That’s great! Thank you. So you are able to keep most of that behind the seat, not necessarily under it right? And does any of that affect the sliding or reclining of the seat?

I have a storage box bolted into mine. Can be removed once the bin lid is open.

There's actually usable storage under the rear seats. I re-purposed some plastic shoebox-sized bins, which fit good enough on the floor inside the seat frame to not slide around. Each are big enough to hold tiedowns and such. Two on one side, one plus a Noco jumpstarter in its own case under the other. I have the tech12volt sub box behind the rear driver side seat too, so they'll always be reclined some. On the passenger side, that means room for soft tool bags behind the rear seat.

Yes, most of that goes easily behind the seat without affecting the sliding or reclining of the seats. (The rope makes it look cluttered, but it isn’t). 44D3A1BF-B2D8-4367-8F7C-75561A8B81C2.jpg

I have my straps in a 12" Husky tool bag and 2 sets of hardcase tools. All fit under the seats. Behind the seats, I have a slim Milwaukee pack out box that has my tow strap, jump pack and some more hand tools.

Got the behind the seat storage bags @PhysicZ. Those work great and leave even more room behind the seats. You can't even see them when the seats are back.

First time poster here. Just got a new 08 Crewmax that I really like, but so far the back seat storage is the biggest drawback. All that space in the CM had me thinking I could put everything back there... does anyone know if you could swap in a second row seat from a different year model to get around the sliding base issue? I like the ideas here just trying to brainstorm. Thanks!

Edit: I’m also not great at navigating this site yet, so if anyone has tips/links from other discussions/threads please share!
