I currently own a 2018 F150 with the 5.0. I have had issues with oil consumption since purchasing used in 2018. Truck had 16000 miles when purchased. It was not certified although I did purchase from a Ford dealer. I have gone through a few consumption test and they finally decided to order a new long block engine back in July 2019. They gave me an extended power train warranty after fighting for something. I have since put 12,000 miles on the truck and it is still consuming oil but it has slowed, still more than normal. I recently took the truck back to the dealer for a noise while accelerating. They diagnosed it with a bad valve guide and bad catalytic converter. The truck still shifts like crap.

my question is it worth trading for a Tundra. I dont think I could go through this again if I picked a truck with the tower cam leaking. If I did purchase a Tundra, I am looking at 2017 or 18 that is certified. Any comments would be appreciated.

Yea, been a pain since buying. I do have the power train warranty that is good till 100k miles. I have called around and talked to a few Toyota dealers and so far the trade in for my truck is around 25k while they are asking 36-37 for the Tundras

All I can tell you is that I have run Toyota’s for over 20 years and have never had a major issue. Never. I’ve had one Ford, one GMC in that time and both had issues.

This is my experience. Nobody can tell you that you won’t have an issue with Toyota but the numbers simply don’t lie. Toyota’s are more reliable than any other brand out there. If you are looking at reliability as one of the most important factors than you should absolutely buy a Tundra.

2017 Limited. 40,000 and cams are bone dry. It does make me nervous but I really don’t think it a massive amount of Tundras having the cam leak.

    Good luck!

I’m located in SC and trucks tend to hold their values. My truck on KBB trade in is around 27. I’m looking for SR5 with 4x4. I tow a boat and we sometimes get crazy weather in winter.

my coworker has a Ford F-150 2017 as well he doesn't complain about any of the issues however he is pretty happy with the fact he has a 5-year extended warranty in case if something happens. I guess it floats his boat if things break. Lol

My tundra is not without its issues as well since buying new, not nothing bad yet.. it's up to you.

    A bunch
You mentioned the worst case scenario for the Tundra really. And there's 2 huge differences between it and the issues you've had with the Ford - 1) it's easily diagnosed, every month or 2 I just peak through the wheel well to check and 2) it's fixed right the first time, so those who have to deal with the pain of the leak know that after it's repaired that side of the engine won't leak again.

If you do go for a used Tundra try to get them to throw in an aftermarket battery, the OEM ones don't last like they should.

My dad is a "Ford Guy" and he was always fixing our Fords growing up. I will admit, I learned A LOT about fixing cars and how to do things cheap. I always thought 'oil consumption' was a fact of life. First thing we'd do before a trip was add a quart of oil.... Then I bought a Toyota Tacoma, and it changed my view on cars. Yeah, the Tundra doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but I can rely on it starting every time, unless i kill the battery.

Go for the Tundra, you won't regret it. Watch for the cam tower leak, but otherwise these trucks are rocks. There has also been some question on the rear diff "leak" or seeping, and it usually is just needing to be torqued to spec.

The changes the engine liner in 2018 and went to direct injection. Also they went to the 10speed transmission.

Ouch, that is a lot. That is more like what the old Fords used up, 60'-70's like my Dad used to drive, but I think half of it was leaking out of the drain plug. Was any of it leaking out of the drain plug on your truck?

No leaks. I’m guess that is why the catalytic converter went bad.

    Up till March, I owned a 2013 F150.

I now own a 2020 Tundra SR5; nuff said. LOL Even the 'issues' I've heard of (e.g., the cam tower leaks) are pretty much one-and-done, and that's *if* you run into the issues.

I got my SR5 4X4 for ~$38k USD new so I would think you could do a little better on a used one.

The cam tower seal leak sucks but I haven't heard of anyone whose leak has been so bad that they had to add oil between changes or had spots on the driveway or anything like that. The toughest part seems to be convincing Toyota it's a "leak", rather than a "seep" and getting them to fix it. There's also a very slim chance (1 member on here that I know of) that they mess up the repair so some folks have chosen to wait until the leak is severe enough that you can smell the oil burning off the heat shield before getting it fixed (though there's no guarantee it will ever get that bad).

thanks for the heads up. The MSRP for the 2020 that I have seen are around 46k. I didn’t think they would come off that much.

I have a 2014 with about 58k. It has had the cam tower leak, the head unit stopped working one day, and a few other issues such as a blocked diff breather.

I don’t off-road or abuse the truck. My wife uses it as a DD. All maintenance has been done religiously by the same dealer and much sooner than the regular schedule. This is one of the more troublesome vehicles I’ve ever owned. I would have gotten rid of it already, but my wife loves it.

However, when I do trade it, it will likely be for another Tundra. Not sure whether it will be current design or upcoming remodel, but pretty certain it will be a Tundra. Just think that I got a crappy one. But believe that statistically, they are less prone to issues than the competition.

I came from a 2014 F-150 but with the V-6 ecoboost. Only had 35,000 miles on it but had nothing but problems. Had to replace the timing chain and was then having issues with the turbos. Had the timing chain fixed under the powertrain warranty and traded that POS for a 2015 tundra. Never been happier! Shockingly, the MPG are better with my Tundra. Seems like the V8 does better local and on hill terrain vs the ecoboost. Don’t regret my decision at all.

And that's for a base SR5 or one of the TRD packages? $46k USD sounds high for an SR5 to me unless they've really jacked the prices up since the plants were shut down. Mine was $45k CAD including taxes, fees, levies and all the other crap they tack on.
