TRD Pro grill for 2020 platinum?

I have a 2020 platinum. I know there is a sensor behind the front emblem on the front grill. Is it possible to replace the front grill with the TRD pro style grill without having to give up the TSS sensor feature?

What happens to the feature if I do replace the grill and not have the wiring hooked up to the sensor module? Will there be an issue with leaving the wiring harness exposed to the elements? Will the TSS trigger all kinds of warnings or will of just fail silently?

 

Yes, you can replace your Platinum grill to a TRD pro grill without losing anything. Many members have done it.

You can search YouTube for the grill swap procedure it’s easy. The Thread mentioned above discusses the newer (2018+) TRD Pro grilles needing an insanely expensIve TSS sensor cover that is sold separately so make sure you review that if you decide to go that route.

 

Also, I think I read somewhere that some folks worry that the sensor needs to be recalibrated in order to work properly. Are there known issues with DIY’ers having issues with the TSS feature when swapping the sensor onto a new front grille assembly? I assume one can’t recalibrate the sensor in their personal garage with basic tools?

 

No reprogramming needed. When you receive the new grill, transfer the TSS sensor to the new grill and just plug it back in. The disappointing part is the TSS cover that has to be purchased separately. Although I had an SR5 grill, I just did the Pro grill swap as described above. Just install the sensor in the OEM location and plug it back in. True plug and play swap.

 

I just replaced the grille on my 2018 SR5 CrewMax with TSS. They designed it specifically for TSS, an upgrade from 2007-2017. T-Rex X-Metal is the one I put on mine.

 

If you search, you will find TONS of information on this site and youtube on what you need to buy, and how to install it.

If you want to change the grill to the 19+ style, buy the OEM grill which comes with surround from @Roman of cool springs toyota. You have a platinum so you dont need the hood bulge. (dont cheap out and buy aftermarket cause its not much difference in price and its not worth the headache trust me....)
You will also need a TSS Garnish for the 19+ style grill. I recommend buying off ebay if you can find a good seller to save yourself $350. Or if you dont want to risk it, just buy the OEM garnish as well from roman.
Everything you will ask now and forever onwards has already been asked and videos on youtube. If you want the 17 TRD Pro grill let me know and I will explain that process as its a little different and you need a relocation bracket to make it work.

be careful during the install and just remove the TSS from the platinum grill and install it into the OEM. They are currently backed up so there maybe a bit of a wait for a 19+ TRD PRO grill.

This is my ebay aftermarket grill with aftermarket sensor garnish. The TSS works, but only after I fixed it.

 

I just looked up the 17 style Trd pro grilles, they are also pretty sweet. Is there an article which explains that process?

Search for “TSS relocation bracket”. A couple choices including Jomax customs and AJT design. I bought a Jomax bracket and they provide you all the instructions you need, it’s pricier though.

I am thinking the Grille Hole Cover (53113-OC010) is the little plastic piece on the top of the grille that covers the access hole to plug/unplug the TSS sensor wire harness (grilles for pre-TSS Tundras would not have this).

 

That is correct. I have one on my 2020.

 

So what did you have to do to get the aftermarket TSS sensor to work? Did you use the relocation bracket? From what understand that the aftermarket garnish is just decoration and not functional to work with TSS.

 

From what I’ve read, the Plastic on some of the aftermarket TSS garnish covers for the 2018+TRD Pro grilles can be too thick causing the TSS radar to not function properly. It appears to be hit or miss.

 

So the aftermarket garnish (sensor cover) wasn’t any issue. TSS worked fine with the aftermarket garnish. No relocation bracket used as those are only for the 17 trd pro grill where as mine is the 19+ style. From my experience, aftermarket garnishes ($30-50) should work completely the same as the oem one which costs $400+. Granted it’s probably not as high quality but you get what you pay for. The reason my TSS didn’t work was because of the aftermarket grill itself, it is not the same fitment as OEM which causes an issue with the calibration of the TSS sensor. How I fixed it on the other hand..... one day someone who is having this issue will ask and I will answer. Hopefully I answered your questions!

I bought this one . Tons of them have chipped edges from poor manufacturing. This one didn’t have any chips or imperfections.

 

I put the TRD Pro Grille on my 2020 limited and now the TSS sensor isn’t working. I used the aftermarket TSS sensor cover and hooked everything up the way it should be. Any thoughts. I’ve had it to the dealer for recalibration and they said I needed a different sensor. HELP!

 

Try running it without the garnish cover. Make sure the sensor and wires are secure. I seem to recall it may take a few miles to recalibrate. When it rains my sensor will turn off and I get the warning which resets when I turn the truck off and back on.

 

I had it to the dealer and now it’s all screwed up. Charged me $265 and there are now 3 lights on the sensor tripped. I don’t think I can install it without the cover as it bolts to that.

 

Why did the dealer think you needed a new sensor? You could try tie wrapping the sensor to the radiator support to see if you can at least get it working and leave the garnish off. You could also go back to the original grille set up to make sure things work.

 

I couldnt get any of the cheap ebay clones to work. What did work is a piece of kydex and some 3m vhb tape. TSS has been flawless since.

So if you don’t mind sharing how did you get that to work?

 

Aquire a pro grille, mount your stock sensor to the grille and mount it onto your truck. Cut a piece of kydex to fit that rectangular recess that the sensor cover would normally go. Then throw some 3m vhb tape around the perimeter of the kydex and place it into the recess and hold it for a min.

I don’t have the newer TRD Pro Grille - so you mount the sensor to the grille? So you could run without a cover if you wanted?

 

Another option could be to try a sensor relocation bracket which will keep it mounted closer to the Stock location and keep the eBay garnish mounted in the grille.


I don’t believe these sensors recalibrate by themselves. I reviewed the documents on TIS pertaining to the TSS recall for the 18-19’s and there was a link to the recalibration steps involving techstream and some sort of device that needed to be placed at a certain distance and height in relation to the center mark on the sensor in the grille. It was also specific to the style grille on the truck as well
