Ticking noise 4.7L question Not Manifolds

Hello I'm new here, been doing a lot of reading but have never actually posted. I recently purchased a 2002 Tundra 4.7l. Im starting to worry that it has been abused by it's previous owner. Just Had the timing belt/tensioner/water pump/thermostat/serpentine belt done when I first purchased it about 2500 miles ago. But it's also got two leaking manifolds, CV axles with torn boots, I have to change out a shitty spacer lift, there's some power steering fluid leaking, and the brake fluid is dirty/need new rotors/pads soon. All that was borderline okay, I could deal with it.

But now just a couple days ago the truck started making a new tick, seems to be coming from the driver side top end. I'm sure alot of you would say it's probably the manifolds, but I already knew those were leaking and this happened suddenly and unexpectedly the other day. When I first start the truck the noise is not there, then it comes and stays untill I shut off the truck. If I kill the truck then immediately start it back up the noise takes a minute or two to gradually come back regardless of the temperature of the motor. The motor seems to idle smoothly as indicated by rpms, but there are some slight intermittent shudders that can be felt in the floor. The speed of the tick does increase with rpms. And I'm almost convinced it goes away when I really step on it, but it could just be the droan from the aftermarket exhaust making it inaudible. I have video/sound of the noise I can try to post soon.

Welcome. First things first. You may not have a leak. I've been living with what I thought was an exhaust leak for 4 years. Recently I decided to replace my steering shaft seal and I'll be damned if the noise didn't go away. The noise I was hearing was because that seal was ripped. It would only enter the cab at certain times.

As far as the tick, that might be normal too. It's hard to say without hearing it. But I know a ticking noise is normal for the 4.7L as it's been explained here before.

You should pull back your carpet and see if your seal is ripped. Here is a thread that explains it.

Ticking is normal for most modern engines, something to do with the high pressure fuel system. Your tick is unknown till we hear it. Post up that video

Thanks for your feedback. I know I have a leaking manifold or gasket on each side because I recently pressurized the exhaust system with a leaf blower and sprayed soapy water on the manifolds. Both are leaking from the same place in the front. As for the tick I don't believe it is normal as I've put about 2500 miles on the truck in a little over a month and this ticking is definitely new and obvious. That seal is something I should check anyways but the tick is even more noticable outside the vehicle, so I don't think it's that.

 

@Hooptytrix I agree it sounds like a leak, but then why would it have suddenly come on when I already knew what the existing leak sounds like, and why would it disappear for a minute if I turn off and turn back on the truck. It also sounds louder when sticking my ear near the top of the motor vs getting it close the the manifolds by sticking my head in the wheel wells.

 

Gotcha. Sounds like an excuse to throw headers on the truck. As for the tick, maybe you can post a video from your phone? Someone here might have some advice.

Hmm. That is interesting. @empty_lord does that sound normal to you?

 

A valve tap would sounds more like a ping, metal tapping metal (kinda) that sounds like a vac leak. If it sounds like it's coming from the top, poke around and see if anything came loose. If not, pull the valve cover, it's not difficult

 

Sounds like the purge valve vsv working

 

The purge thingy mentioned here is located on the right side of where the video angle. It's a black box with hoses. Take a poke around

Thanks for the help, I found a hose that was disconnected right in front of my face . I'll be driving the truck in a couple hours and will let you know if that stopped the noise . Probably got knocked out of place from driving on loose rocks with this friggin spacer lift.
