Where should we move?

We get lots of snow here in Colorado and in Utah. No salt used to speak of. No rust.

 

Lots of mountains to climb in FL..............oh wait.......

 

Florida has mountains... they are landfill mountains.

 

I actually have a client in South Florida that has the only Basement in a house I have ever seen in Florida and I have been in a lot of houses there!
The house is on a Coral Outcropping next door to the town water holding tank chisled into the coral 100 years ago and his house is on there too.

It is bizarre but great for him!

His house sits 18' above sea level on the island which qualifies it as a Mountain in South Florida to me!

 

I was born in Colorado (Longmount) left Colorado in 02 after high school. Every time I come back and visit I say to myself man this place is booming. I want to come back eventually because I love being up in mountains but living in front range is not looking so good. I'm eventually coming back west and was thinking of the Salt Lake area too but I hear that area is going to be the next Denver.

 

Don't forget about freeway overpasses...…..

 

Colorado is currently ranked #1 for economy. Growth is phenomenal but has it's downsides too. If I leave it won't be because of political climate. The freeways are becoming like Cali and last Saturday where I went to my friend's property I had never seen so many people up there. Jeeps, ATV's, dirt bikes galore. People camping on private property. That's what is going to make me leave. I do like Alamosa. That is a possibility....good place to retire. No high tech paying jobs there.

I grew up in CO (Littleton area) and graduated in ‘02 as well. Great place to live at the time, and for a while I really wanted to go back, but it has really changed. Sooo much more crowded, and the housing prices are crazy right now.

 

How is Texas? I thought about moving there at some point, but am undecided. How are the taxes, pay, cost of living etc? I am in the North East US and the cost of living is crazy, while the wages have not kept up.

I’ve only passed through Cedar City, so I can’t offer much critique there. Quite a bit further south and a lot smaller town compared to up north. It’s pretty close to Zion’s National Park, Escalante National Park, and Fishlake National Forest, all of which are really beautiful places.

 

A very nice 2bdm condo that I was leasing in Aurora was $635 in late 2011. It is now $1575.

 

I live in Houston but have worked in a ton of places. I did a 2 year project in Moab, UT, typically a 30 day rotation. There was a good group of young (hippy base jumping type) locals and a few good leather skin 4x4 dudes lol, but in off season, Winter, they all bounced and the town was completely dead, like restaurants rotate what weekends they open bc nobody is there dead...But that's just Moab. On Christmas only the Chinese restaurant was open lol...Salt Lake was really cool, I would always try to spend a day or two before or after Moab. I think Utah would be cool, who cares about the city grit, that makes it fun sometimes and it's easy to get away from it there and enjoy nature.

So is Texas not on the list bc your help is not needed due to our great housing market? lol kidding...

 

I lived in SLC for 13 years, it has a lot of good things going for it, strong economy, responsible fiscal spending, very family oriented with plenty of activities, world class skiing(Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude, Park City and many more) all within a short drive. But with that you get to breathe some of the worst air in the world during the winter, commuter nightmare during snow events, lots of crime, some of highest abuse of prescription drugs in the county. And don't forget, hands down the worst drivers of any state that I have lived in.
While I lived there, I developed chronic bronchitis that magically went away when I moved to rural western Colorado two years ago. I still visit family and friends from time to time, but always glad to back in a boring, small town where the people wave to you instead of giving you the bird.

there has been some decline due to oil and gas, but the major cities and surrounding areas definitely check the boxes for good job markets, reasonable cost of living, and low taxes (we don’t have a state income tax)

 

Most overrated state in the country.

I will elaborate. Most of Texas is not visually pleasing. Everyone is quick to scream about Hill Country but that's one area of the state. Even your beaches are not nice. Texas has horrible traffic and it's growing so fast it will only get worse. Property taxes are high(at least in DFW. Not sure about the entire state). Texas is miserably hot for months on end. "But it's a dry heat!"

Seriously, I really thought I would like Texas but after visiting nearly a dozen times I determined I never, ever want to live there.

 

When I lived in Clermont Florida I was shocked to find buildings in their downtown area that had basements. It was the only place I ever saw that while living there.

 

We are actually moving to savannah in two weeks from tennessee

Great to visit for a couple of weeks.. wouldnt want to live there. My best friend from high school just lived in Clermont for 7 years and hated it so much that he left his wife (the reason they moved there in the first place) and moved back up to Maine ‘before he killed himself’. He was serious with that statement.
On the flip side yall laugh at us in your boardshorts and flip flops in January while we’re up here angrily shoveling 18” of fresh shitty snow so its all perspective I guess

Probably.. jokes dude. One of the pilots from down in Davenport accuses me of riding a polar bear to work up here and asks ‘how my igloo is coming along’ every fall

 

It might help to sit down with your wife and write down pros and cons of both cities. Are you planning to move first then secure a job? It's doable but might add to the stress level. My wife and I were considering a move out West but every time I run the numbers it becomes harder to justify. For us to leave TN(no income tax) and move to UT/CO it was going to cost us around $350-500 per month, and that's just in income taxes. That doesn't include the cost of living increase or the fact that property taxes are higher. These are the things I would be looking at.

 

So you're asking about the choice of living in a place with mountains or living in a place with no mountains? I'm confused. Is there a choice here? Mountains are better than no mountains. All the other considerations are just about which set of mountains should you live in.
