Thoughts on 1a auto shocks

My oem springs are bilstein yellow shocks. Not sure which ones, either 4600 or 5100. I'm surprised they still work decently. Being at 20 years old and rusty

 

What makes a 80 dollar coil spring worse than a 200 dollar coil spring? Struts i get why there is a difference in price. But the springs i dont really get.

Aggressive, but yes. Although you will likely already feel like someone punched you in the dick after 10,000 miles with those turds. The only thing separating your truck from the road is tires and suspension. Don't cheap out on either. When I'm used car shopping and I see a car with landsail or youmove or goready tires or some crap on it, I take a hard pass. Obviously this person didn't give a crap about this car or their own life. Worth the few extra $$ to put quality, safe parts on the car. And they will likely last longer.

 

If your truck has the TRD off road package then you have the yellow 4600 bilstein. The 4600 ride is bit harsh, it is a heavy duty strut/shock. The silver 5100's are really nice at oem ride height. Eibach makes a kit with springs and struts, there is a family relationship between bilstein and eibach but I don't know how that translates to the struts. If you opt to buy new springs please don't go to cheap, that would negate all the wonders of a quality setup.

 

Man I thought it was just me being anal. I really cannot understand the thinking, spend $$$$$$ on nice rims to fancy things up and then go ahead and shove shit tires on there. $90,000 BMW 7 series with 22" landsail tires WTF

 

how rusted are they? Could you sand blast them and recoat them with por15?

 

My experience with 1a auto suspension parts is they're fine for a beater. but if its a car you like. you'll regret not spending some more money

 

@Pucks18 your relatively local to me. if you buy shocks and springs/reuse the old springs, you can swing by one day and i can put the shocks together. I've got a spring compressor in the garage.

 

I spotted a spring compressor on assbook marketplace and got me thinking about cleaning up my garage lol. I hate paying people to do stuff I can do, especially now that I've been furloughed

Hell yeah, I remember wrestling that cheap screw compressor and the whole time praying "please don't slip" then I did it with a wall mount unit at a buddy's shop and I swore I would never touch the cheapo thingy ever again.
I can justify the cost now, the wife's Lexus is almost due, she needs some low to go wit dem 19's

 

my avalons struts are driving me nuts with how soft they are.. so its next use for me will likely be swapping the Touring springs and shocks onto my avalon... I cant bring myself to lower that car... but oem tourings ride like i want..

(why do i keep putting money into an old womans car? the world may never know! Hell i have SUV brakes on an AVALON!)

 

My mom has a 2010 Avalon, the misses and I can't drive it. It Floats lol. I'm scheduled to go work on her car soon and now I know the touring suspension is going happen

 

my cost for all the parts (isolators and all OEM toyota) was like 1 grand... alot.. but i love this damn car because its soo comfortable an manages 30-33 mpg on the highway with plenty of power.

(plus the 3.5 has proven to be almost as reliable as the 4.7)

 

Toyota put that 3.5 in a few cars and it is solid. When we decided on a convertible, it was difficult to find the is350c but the 250c was plenty. We waited and I'm glad we did, that motor has plenty of power. I don't pay attention to gas mileage anymore, I remember my '70 Chevelle 396...... Single digits all day so 14-17 from my Tundra and about 24 on the Lexus seems kinda generous

Thanks man. Does bilstein or any other QUALITY brand make a more comfy shock? It appears to me all the quality brands are aiming toward offroad/on road usage. If not its whatever ill just throw the 4600 on. The suprising thing is my suspension still works fine, despite being 20 years old haha.

I prefer bilstein over most brands, even for my cars. The 5100 is excellent for daily driven trucks, just keep it at original ride height

 

Why 5100 over 4600? I thought the 5100 were even MORE for offroading

 

I know this: monores will make it ride like a 70s cadillac. It won't feel good though due to spring rates. So it tries to be a marshmallow with heavy springs. It sucks. Floaty, wallows around, leans in turns. Garbage.

 

I had the 4600 on my last tundra and found them to be harsher than the 5100

 

Clean up your springs with a sanding sponge and wire brush. Spray them with Rustoleum Rust Convertor and then finish off with some Matte Black. Do this before @empty_lord does the swap. He doesn’t want your rust in his garage.

 

Ill either do that, or just buy new bilstein coils, theyre 49 bucks a piece. They also have ones for like 150 a piece but i think i can go cheap on the springs. Getting the 4600 though

 

How tf do i buy new coil springs?? Do they need to be vehicle specific, so coil springs for a 2001 tundra, or are they strut specific, so a spring specifically made to fix the bilstein 4600?

 

No love here for the Harbor Freight Strut Compressors? I've used it twice now, once to install my 5100's, then again when I realized I should have went to notch 3 instead of 2.

When it comes to tools that might kill me, I try to avoid harbor freight. Their jack stand recall is a good example of why...

 

How was ride quality at 2? I found it a tad too soft, I'm on clip 4 now
