I feel like this is a weird noise but I am not sure. It's a 14, 5.7 and I just got my first truck ever so I may be just extra cautious. Anyone else have this knocking sound? It's not all the time.

Yea see you noticed it even without me trying to describe it. Which makes me think that is not normal. Its like two wooden spoons being smashed to each other. It is not always there.

About to hit 67k miles but I bought it like 5 days ago. I just googled ticking noise on tundras and turns out there are quite a few posts. People say its normal and one guy posted he uses toyota brand oil and it took care of the knocking. So there is that... After my 1k mile, I may change up the oil.

I am not a mechanic by any means but I am very picky on how my vehicle behaves overall so even a small difference triggers me. I still would like to get more feedback as to if this is normal or not. I bought the truck only because the engine is practically bullet proof. I know a handful of people in their 200k miles and they only do oil changes every 8k mile at best. I amma feel unlucky if it does not work out for me like that.

Diesel noise is 110% normal. Here is another thread for reference with a little bit of explanation for it.

That doesn't sound good or normal to me if the video clip depicts the true sound of the engine. What would concern me is that the noise is worst from underneath the truck. I can see a little valve noise on top but you shouldn't be able to hear that from underneath.

My truck's engine is whisper quiet, even when first started in single digit weather when valve ticking would be more likely to occur due to lifter bleed down. Granted, my truck has just a little over 3K miles and yours has 67K miles...........that shouldn't make a bit of difference, assuming the previous owner had the truck properly maintained (regular oil changes with the correct oil).

If that was my truck it would go back to the dealer and don't let them tell you some BS story.

My 2012 had a dieselish sound to it. Not loud but you could notice it. My new 2018 has the same diesel ish sound to it. Doesn't sound like a full on diesel knock just real subtle.

I would not think this would happen in every truck. I am always lucky like this when it comes to cars.

Dealer is a friend of mine and I know if there is something actually wrong with it, he does not know about it. He had the truck checked by two different mechanics. It does not happen every time. I am not sure what triggers it. I've checked the carfax before buying and it showed regular oil changes albeit a little more miles than I'd have done between changes but nothing alarming.

Yea sometimes its subtle sometimes it is not. I really do not hear it until I stop and listen to it. It is very hard to truly capture sound on a video let alone on a phone.

I’ve heard it’s not unusual. Tacoma does a similar thing. I’d have a Toyota dealer check it out. Could be something as simple as a tension pully.

My '08 with 112k does this and I have come to accept it as a "normal" quirk of the 5.7. It is frustrating to me that these engines are so high tech and make noises like my old 1964 chevy with worn out lifters. It gets much better when the engine warms up but I still hear it. It is the most audible when the engine is cold and I put it in gear and let it idle. I had an Avalon with the 3.5l that I traded for this truck and it made the same noise although not as bad. Was hoping it was an exhaust leak but I haven't found one.

Mine has same occasionally. I think it comes from loosen bolt of torque converter or heat shield.. I will check it and update it later.

May 3rd 2019 I wrote above and Now I update it.
i have similar noise, exactly between 5 to 10mins of driving. Stop at light or drive thru bank etc... i notice that noise. But I shift to D, the noise gone and won't come back.

i think mine came from on sticky valve rod.
    - My neighbor guy work transmission he pointed valve rod... not transmission.
I use regular Seafoam 8oz(1/2 of a bottle) pouring into engine as Seafoam instruction. And than i tested many time at the same mins of driving at the same spot that i used to stop. the noise had gone...
I used Seafoam 2000miles after last oil change, but Seafoam recommend about 500 miles before oil change. I drove about 1000 mile after Seafoam treatment.

And also I use Lucas gas treatment too.

Today(9-10-2019) I update based on my current experience.
A month ago it was I about 4,000miles after last oil changed, my truck made clinking noise again. I was believing it was valve rod and lack in oil. I checked level and added 1/2 qt. The noise had gone. The seafoam and lucas is helpful to clean but can not stop the noise because it is motor oil's. I have 2010 Rav4. When i park it inclined lot, it also makes valve rod noise when short in oil.
I'm very caring about the quantity and quality of oil. The two vehicle of mine are very sensitive. I think it for the oil 0w-20... very light. When i start the engine it travels fast to go everywhere but over the night it flow down to pan and nothing on the head. That is why it makes noise.. I personal belief.

I’ve got a 2010 Tundra 5.7, just hit 100k and this is the exact noise that my engine has been making for the last 6 months. Some days it’s louder than others but I find it very hard to believe a that this is “normal” because I’ve got friends with the same truck and motor and theirs are all quiet. Somethings is definitely up with my truck as well as the rest of us who are experiencing this and Toyota needs to take full responsibility for this since there are so many of us dealing with this.

Following is my noise when short in oil.
The noise gone when i hit the accelerator if it really little bit short. But it stays when it short about 1/2 qt Or more ( add 1/2 qt, the noise gone). Too sensitive.

Well I’ll recheck my oil level and post back once I do my oil change. Since I just hit 100k two days ago I’ll go ahead and change my oil and triple check the level. I’ll get back to you all on this whether or not interested.

I did more than 5 oil changes within the first 10k of my ownership from 70k to 80k miles. First oil change I did the filter looked like it was dipped in mud. Thats why I did so many oil changes, trying to clean it up. It was still doing the noise but became less frequent. I've always put mobil 1 synt but this last oil change at 85k i used liqui molly and also used their ceramic coater from Amazon. The noise is gone. It was still there for a short while after the oil change but I have not noticed it for a while now. Actually I forgot about this and your reply reminded me.

I work at a veterinary clinic and we have a 09 crewmax. The clinic purchased it new and it has a 4000lb vet box mounted in the bed.It has 312000 miles on it and it sounds like a diesel and has since around 100000 miles on it. I own a 07 crewmax with 232000 on it and it sounds like a diesel to. These 5.7 engines are just noisy but they have plenty of power and are pretty tough.

If the truck currently has 0w20 in it , change it to a 5w30 synthetic . It will help the noise significantly . But yes as others have stated the noise I very normal and very common with the 3urfe engine .

Had this same concern when I bought my 2019 new . Changed to 5w30 weight oil and the noise is 90% gone now . Other tundra owners have commented how quiet my 5.7 is compared to theirs .

Mine does it , after oil change for few days then it goes away. I think Toyota oil is too thin.

I hate to say...but it sounds like bad rod bearings to me. Drain the oil and look for metal specks.

I might switch after my warranty expires. Folks here have indicated that the owner's manual for the Tundra used to specify 5W-30 in North America and still specs something as heavy as 10W-40 for the Middle East for this engine, if I recall correctly.

I’m going to switch to 5w-30 Synthetic today. These 5.7 are noise but hopefully this will calm down a little bit.

Yes here in north american toyota has to suggest the use of 0w20 due to CAFE fuel economy and emission laws . Its stupid . Ive ran 5w30 synthetic since new in my 2019 tundra . no issues what so ever , nice a quiet . Anywhere else in the world toyota suggests 5w30 or thicker for the 5.7 .
