Remote Start.. Yay or Nay?

I have always wanted one and now that I have a vehicle I am in love with and really truly want to put time and money into, I was looking for some advice/guidance. I'm in a 2010 Platinum, and have done some looking around but not having much luck as far as reviews go. There were some cheaper options on sparks parts, and some $500+ options through best buy. Anyone have a particular model they like, or things to be aware of and to stay away from?

 

I bought mine (3rd gen tundra) off Amazon. Had good reviews and gave it a shot. Been good so far, easy install, good videos for install, uses factory remote, the range I get is about 250ft.

I have a Compustar alarm/remote start on my 2014.
Had a local installer install it.

I use it almost every time I start the truck just to hear my BAM muffler..

I use the DroneMobile app with it..
Been very happy with it..

Whatever you do, don't get the Toyota remote start..

 

Wow thanks for all the quick replies guys! I will check all that out... I do like the idea of not needing a separate remote and to just use the factory fob. I like to keep my keys minimal and simple so was on the fence about a separate remote.

 

and you can always add on accessories later by plugging extra modules to harness.
the fortin evo 1 is very easy to install. plug and play. I think it took me 45 min to install and that is with removing the body panels.

check your key code first to be sure.

I had mine installed by the toyota dealership and I think the brand is "viper."
I loooove having a remote start. The only problem I've had is when I started my truck too early it shut off after 15 minutes but it leaves the headlights on if its dark and they are on auto. It drained my battery and almost didn't start back up that morning

Mine came with this model. Works great but it also has to have the Toyota key fob On the same key ring. Options are available too.

 

Some aftermarket use your factory remote, others replace it.
You won't end up needing to carry 2 remotes..

As much as I do trust it, I'd never lock the keys in the truck and solely rely on it.
There are also a few other options as far as smartphone control...

 

Phone Remote would be nice, as well as just an added layer of redundancy that doesn't add to your edc.

 

I had a Tacoma that I installed a remote start on. All was great until my battery died (covered by warranty after a brief fight with Toyota). They told me that there was a parasitic draw that was causing me issues and they wanted several hundred dollars to troubleshoot, I declined. After getting the truck home, I did some load testing and pulled fuses and was able to narrow it down to the remote start module. After some reading, it turns out that as it is always listening for a start or lock command that there is a slight draw on the system. I work from home and only ran the truck once every week or two and if I had driven it more frequently I am sure it would not have been an issue as the alternator would keep the battery charged.

With that said, my new Tudra has factory remote start, but I will ensure I run it once a week to be safe.

 

I have a Compustar. This is my 2nd remote start. I recommend getting one that shows the vehicle started. My first one didn’t and it was a pain to go look to make sure it was running. I love mine, used it every day when I commuted to work. Now working from home, don’t use it as much, but as stated earlier, it is fun to hear the exhaust (TRD for me) as you walk up to the truck.

 

I had a compustar with my tacoma that was 100% flawless unless the windshield had a lot of snow on it. I had a long range fob.

I have the tech12volts kit, which is a preprogrammed Fortin Evo-1. The starter itself works great. I use my factory fob (limited range) and it's solid. There is a long range fob as well but I opted to go with the Mycar cellular module so I could control it with my phone. When it works, it's great but, it's glitch and they are regularly fixing bugs in the software. Right now I'm dealing with it not communicating with my phone if I'm using My ATT 5GE service. If I'm in 4G territory it's fine. Unfortunately I have 5GE at home. I'm emailing the mycar people about it now.

 

You can't go wrong with this one and it comes with James! You won't get his awesome support with anything else...i wouldn't buy any other remote start!

 

Couple questions: does any splicing void warrenty on anything ?
Do your headlights stay on if you turn off the truck?

I installed a Compustar in my '07. First vehicle I've owned to ever have remote start. I LOVE IT! 3000' range with the 2-way remote. Having a remote that lets you know you're truck has started is a BIG bonus. I can start my truck before I even pull up to the dock to recover my boat. I was in Ole Red Gatlinburg having dinner. After my meal I started the truck, with the remote, parked 3 blocks away.

I literally just picked up my truck from a shop that installed my T13 compustar and drone mobile. Absolutely love it so far. The proximity unlock is a really nice feature too.

 

I've used this company for my Ford work truck and my 2007 Tundra. Both installs took me less than 30 mins to install. 100% plug and play kits. Youtube videos to show you everything. multiple options.. long range, app/ cell module, highly recommend!!

I have the Viper and i had the time extended to 30 mins. It can only be done by the installer from a computer. And dont leave your lights on AUTO.

 

Love my Viper! Can start it from up to a 1/4 mile away with the remote and start it from the other side of the country with the app.

I have a Toyota remote start on my 4runner after having other aftermarket starters on other vehicles that don't last (or the fobs). The annoying part of the Toyota starter is it shuts off the vehicle when you go to unlock it, not sure if it can be programmed not to do that.

 

Personally I would not install one. Already get bad enough MPG and don’t see the need for unnecessary idling.

If anything I would do heated seats. Way better. My Lexus seats warm up in 60 seconds in single digit weather.

 

^^This one right here. I have a 2018, but press my key remote 4 times and it has never failed me. Install was about 45 minutes because I kept going back and forth from a video link from James. As long as you don't press the brake pedal before you insert and turn the key to run, the engine stays running. Love mine
