Looking for a 2018 Tundra long bed (8ft) camper shell. Located Gen 2 shells used but not Gen 3 used. Anyone know specific differences in Gen 2 vs Gen 3 long bed dimensions? Will the Gen 2 shell fit reasonably well on the Gen 3 bed including rear door fit?

So I would say it depends on your level of needed perfection and the kind of rear door you are talking about?

The only difference that I can discern between the 2 generations of beds is the actual tailgate itself.
For some reason they made the tailgate twice as thick on the 3rd gen as on the 2nd and that is about a 1.5" difference.
Since you need to index the shell on the tailgate area so that the back door sits correctly against the tailgate the whole shell may end up 1.5" shy of the front of the bed instead of at the rear.

I was just going to rivet a 2" aluminum L channel onto the front of the shell near the cab to cover that gap and be done with it but I imagine not all shells are identical to the ones that I have found so YMMV but this is really the only issue at all that I came across with a 2nd gen shell on my 3rg gen truck.

Really lucky actually as far as I was concerned.

So when I saw a 2nd Gen fiberglass shell here I jumped on it and was just going to coat it in black bedliner and be done.
This ARE shell has a small lip that has to sit down on the rails and extends over them a little too and if the two gens of beds were different this would not have worked at all but it was a perfect fir and was naturally indexed at the tailgate again because of the lines being the same and the back door fit perfectly and latched without problems.

You can also use a shell from any other truck that sits on top of the rails as long as you are OK with the lines not matching perfectly and this is what I have ended up doing for now.

This one os from an F150 and also fits really well but the straight lines on the sides of the shell do not match the curvy line of the bed sides really.
I doubt that a commercial shell for the Tundra does either though I have never seen one in person to know this for sure?
I am happy with the fit and function though and the sides open much further than the Windoors do on the fiberglass shell making this one much easier to get things into and out of the sides which I like a lot!

I sold the LEER cap from my 2002 to a man with a 2014, it will require a little modification but it will work for him.

Its interesting but mine would have worked too except for the French Doors in the back, too big an issue to mod really but if I had the flip up door it would have fit otherwise almost!

In fact I could have made the width of the doors work but the bed rail height is so vastly different that I could not easily deal with that.

If you think about it the inside measurement of the bed rails has to be about the same as the 4'x8' sheet goods fits most of them about the same way overall aside from the bigger Ford Superduty which are considerably wider.

So many of the standard truck long bed shells are adaptable to other trucks but like I said in the first line of my first post here it also depends on your need for perfection and concern about how they might look too?

And of course that is weighed against just getting a new one and paying big bucks for one too.

I'm looking for a shell for a 2016 RCLB. Planning to get an ARE DCU built but that's going to take 2-3 months, so hoping to find something used and inexpensive to throw on in the meantime. Am I understanding correctly that for the most part, if I'm not too concerned about looks, I should be able to make most 8' shells fit well enough?

Hope so! I put down a deposit to hold it, but getting a pre-purchase inspection next week before flying down to Alabama to seal the deal and drive it home, so pics coming soon...

So having never done that before, how's that work? If you don't like the truck you get your deposit?

No, it's non-refundable, so I've basically committed to buying the truck unless the inspection turns up something so bad that it makes more sense to walk away down a grand. It's one of the challenges of shopping long distance. I'd found a similar truck a little over a month ago that I wanted, but while I was waiting on additional photos and calling local mechanics to set up an inspection, someone local walked in and bought it. When they're not rusted, these things go real fast, so I basically decided to buy this one based on photos, Carfax, and a lengthy set of maintenance records, all of which I received the same day it first popped up online.

In exchange for the deposit, they're holding it for me until I get it inspected on Wednesday. If the inspection turns up anything important that needs to be done, they've agreed to deduct that cost from the sale price, but I suspect they're not going to find anything beyond normal wear.

Does anyone have or know who sells a hard, hinged, one piece tonneau for an 8' bed? I used to have an Undercover SE on the CM and had a Century cap on the last DCLB. I have a DCLB again and considering a hinged hard tonneau for it like the Undercover, but I only come up with what looks like 4 piece foldable covers for 8' beds.

That's so we know you plan on joining and being a contributing member and so people can get to know you a bit and form a bit of trust.
It's a bit of a vetting process to make sure you're not just some douche that's here to scam someone on a sale and then take off. At least that's how I interpret the rule.
If you plan to stick around and be a member, great. Post pics of it. Post pics of your truck. Post in the new member intro thread. Take your coat off, stay a while. After 50 posts, put it in the for sale section.
If you just joined to sell something, you're better off putting it on FB market place, craigslist, etc.
