RSI is releasing its SmartCap all metal topper for 2014+ Tundras this July. While it is expensive, it is certainly a step up from the current fiberglass toppers.

I'm definitely interested. Also looking at RLD Design. I just wish they had more/better pictures of the caps on Tundras. The RSI is appealing because it has the 3rd brake light mounted above the rear glass.

Its pretty cool. I was looking at it. Whats with all the cool topper places like GoFast etc being 6 months to a year out on tops ? I rarely even keep a truck a year.

it might be quicker and cheaper to buy a tig and weld something custom instead.

Overkill. Those are stronger than the bed sides they rest on.

Plus I wouldn't want to drive around with 700 pounds on the roof.

The build it yourself idea is interesting but that will lead to many more leak points than the one piece fiberglass caps.

That thing is going to be way to heavy. They should use aluminum.

I was interested in the weight. Didn't look too hard but seems they don't list it anywhere

I'm waiting to see pics on a Tundra. It's at the top of my list for a topper for my truck

Looks like it weighs about the same as fiberglass unit....about 175 lbs or under, depending on bed length and accessories. I'd say this will be a real contender if they ever do actually release them for the Tundra.

My friend got it for his Raptor. The quality is better than my Leer. I would consider selling my leer to get one when they come out.

I'd hope the quality is better since it's about $2000 more! Does the listed price include shipping and install?

ARE Z series paint matched FTW if you want something that looks factory. I did have a leak issue on mine but a little silicone sealed that up.

Time will tell how all the openings on the RCI hold up to leakage.

I was given a quote for an ARE topper that was close to 3K the RSI topper is only around 1K more then a fiberglass topper. Now camper such as GO Faster Campers are closer to double the price of the top of the line topper with all the bells and whistles. A benefit is that it is able to hold more weight i.e. when you add a RTT and then 1 or 2 occupants you are very close to the max weight allowance for a fiberglass topper. Because of these and other factors is the reason why the RSI is at the top of my list. With all this being said this is my option and the way I chose to spend my money.

$3000 is a lot for a glass cap. If you option it out it will get up there but if you can DIY then all those options can be added afterwards for a lot less. Does RCI pricing include shipping and install though?

Also possible to find used caps for $500-1000, just have to pick it up and install it yourself. You can DIY an internal structure out of 8020 profiles to support as much weight as you want for a about 200 bucks. I had a design for this but saw so many people run heavy RTT on standard caps that I figured the design was proven out to hold the weight.

Just throwing ideas out there since I've been down this road before.

I’ve heard good things about the RSI. I went RLD on mine since I bought it last year. Flatbed conversion for me next go around though.

It looks like it will be heavier than any fiberglass cap, and much heavier than an aluminum cap. It's also about $1000 more expensive than the new 8 foot aluminum A.R.E. DCU I recently installed on my 1st generation Tundra. I do like the design features of the RSI.

i'm being tickled by this as well. it's nice to see something besides the pcor. not sure how the pricing stacks up between the rsi version and the pcor. haven't bothered looking since it's a ways down the road.

Yeah I’m not even going to go down that route right now. I’m super happy with my current setup and needs some miles on it before I start to look.

I priced out for a fiberglass with what the RSI comes stock and again I'm concerned about the weight allowance for the topper. Plus let's be honest fiberglass isn't very strong. With normal wear and tear the RSI will last a lot longer and if you start taking it on trails the fiberglass will start getting nicked up and the abuse will start to show more over the RSI. Again this is just my thought process and opinion.

RSI cap will also be made out of 409 stainless, although not rust proof it is better than cheap carbon metals they could have used.

Agreed. The strength is a key feature for me as I will have a RTT on it.

no issues besides backing into one of my garages doors that got stuck half way down. Surprisingly its just scratched in one spot and I had to unbolt it and rebolt because it was knocked crooked. It was 4k the door was 11k i might have yelled a long string of swear words.
I’m selling my Mig and upgrading to a Way nicer acDc Tig multiprocess so maybe I will make a roof top tent cap with an integrated ladder kayak rack and sell mine. Although I would have bought the RSi if it was available instead.

Driving top weight is 300 lbs, the 700 is while parked, I assume loading and unloading to account for standing on it.

Looks like it got pushed back until October. I may go ahead and preorder it. Start saving a little bit every month so it's not a big purchase at one time.

I looked at a review for the RSI cap on a 2018 F150 and the stated cap weight was 160 lbs. Seems pretty close to the average fiberglass weight?
