What are your suggestions on brakes and rotors

Hello everyone
I am getting some pulsing and shimming on the 2011 SR5 and I know the rear brakes are getting close to needed a change. Has anyone used the

Power Stop K2813-36 on their trucks?

What might be a other brands that are good? This is my daily driver and I live in upstate NY so coating is a plus.

I’m following. I’ve not really found great Aftermarket rotor/pads that I’ve been happy with. I put some Powerstops on my old F-150 and wasn’t crazy about them. I put some Bosch pads and rotors on my Lexus RX350 and they’re OK, have a slight vibration when stopping.

 

i put powerstops (drilled) on my wife's car. they're great. for the truck, i went with ebc slotted/drilled rotors and yellow stuff pads. huge improvement over stock. the yellow pads are a bit dusty so if that bothers you, go with the green pads.

 

I used them on a 2010 Tundra. Went to those as a heavier option when I upgraded to larger tires. Worked well for me but I only had them for roughly 10k miles before the truck was totaled so I can't speak to longevity

 

Where are you located? My current go to are Raybestos EHT3 pads and rotors. Need those coated rotors for the rust belt. I put them on every car that rolls into my home garage (including 3 Tundras).

What is your goal? Just a good replacement or better performance. I put powerstop rotors and pads on the wife's Rav4, the coated original replacement style. But she's unlikely to "drive it to the max", lol. They seamed fine 25k miles later when she traded it in. Not really a Tundra but I did occasionally tow a trailer with 1000 lbs + on it and didn't notice any lake of braking. If you run larger tires, tow often, or just like stronger brakes then maybe the slotted and drilled rotors would help get rid of the heat.

 

I run the Power Stop Z36 and have been very happy.

 

Anyone ever try the Detroit Axle rotors and brakes?

 

Those are ebay specials. Now found on Amazon too. I'd pay up for brakes. At least shoot for mid grade.

I do tow a trailer here an there and I have been hauling lumber lately. I might tryout the power stop drilled and slotted. I ran Cardones on my old Rav4 and there worn really well but that is a smaller car verses the Tundra.

 

I always used cheap; probably the cheapest rotors with midgrade ceramic pads. I never had an issue with regular driving. Sure the inner casting is rough, but it is for regular driving. I had over 40 vehicles, and it works fine for all of them. I don't cheap out on motorcycles and sporty cars, because they are for the intended use. I have an extra set of spare tundra rotors for the front just in case my rotors are warped. Its been 20k miles so far and no issues. They are cheap enough just to replace and slap on new pads. I guarantee you it is what independence shops use unless requested otherwise. Unless you tow or loaded all the time its the least costly option. Id would say 85% of light truck drivers, including myself don't need performance brakes.

 

I would defiantly agree wit you Bpowa about not needing to waste money on performance brakes for regular drivers. I am leery about the cheapest rotors however. I have had cheap ones warp after a short time and the pain of having to change them out to me is worth paying the extra for a good mid grade rotor. That and if you bought two sets of cheap rotors wouldn't it be the same as getting a good mid grade set? With that said I am probably going to go with the standard power stop rotors and ceramic pads. They are about $200 for both axle verse the almost $400 for the performance ones, that and Power stop seems to have a good reputation and other members have had good luck with them

For those that have the Power Stop, are the edges and “hat” painted black?

 

i'd recommend the Stop Tech kit. as the full kit includes every thing. pretty sure from a TRD break Thread that Stop Tech makes the TRD brake kit. so it would be a OEM + with out the the price . only around $100 more than the Power Stop kit . i regret my purchase of Black Hart rotors n pads.

 

I have researched this because believe it or not they say no brake rotors are made in the USA anymore!? That sounds dumb. Chinese steel is kinda notorious for being a very soft sub par steel which has made it affordable for sure. In my research EBC says that their rotors can be made in the USA or the UK now I feel like this steel will be a lot better quality. Even the OEM Toyota rotors you get from the dealer will be made in China. I don’t know if there is a way to know exactly where they are made from by the rotor markings maybe? Anyway I swear by those rotors with the combo of the Toyota OEM brake pads which are made from organic material. IMO cheap Chinese steel rotors plus hard ceramic brake pads will result in warping! My .02, 2 cents, $0.02

 

So on the powerstop would you go with the evolution or the extreme?

My Tundra isn't a daily driver, we don't do a ton of towing with it.

 

Has anyone mess with WP Pro Brake kit .?

 

I have centric rotors with wagner pads on my Tundra. Stops good but got some vibration now. I put OEM toyota rotors with wagner pads on my Sequoia, still smooth.
