Ditch the V8?!? The hell you say. That's just crazy talk. Quite frankly, I find it disconcerting and offensive.

Ford has also done that. I would never buy a ford but it seems like all are ditching v-8s due to emissions

Yeah, change is inevitable. Still, I don't want to live in a world without V8s, especially if they're supercharged. Guess I'll be keeping mine for as long as I'm still above ground. Or, maybe I'll sell it for a fortune in 20 years or so.

Time will tell, but i think it would be a huge mistake by Toyota to completely drop the 5.7 I-force from their lineup. I absolutely love this engine.

So developing a brand new 7.3L is ditching the V8?
Coyote still offered on the F150
GM 6.2 available in more trims than ever
Ram Rebel TRX or whatever it's called on the way (or maybe here already?)

Also, this speculation has been posted here a lot in recent months. :deadhorse:

I just hope they don’t do what they did to the heritage edition, they took out the 3rd row, slapped some badges on there, took away the awful running boards and then charge more. I really hope it goes back as an off-roader not the luxury one the 200 series is.

article has zero credibility. it says 4runner and Sequoia will be based on Tundra platform.

lmfao...ok..then...considering the Tundra and Sequoia are like twice the size of a 4runner, either this means the 4runner is gonna get huge or Tundra and Sequoia are getting really really small.

edit: and literally throwing away the 5.7 is a massive waste. Its a fantastic engine and still relevant despite what soy-based truck buyers and media think.

I think "platform" and "frame" are two different things. Isn't there a rumour out there that the Tundra and Tacoma are going to share a platform too?

I guess the LX will get a twin turbo V8 but the Tundra won't so they can claim they're differentiating between the Lexus and Toyota brands?

The LC300 rumor is very interesting, especially when we see which way Toyota moves with the platform. The current $80K plus 200 series is a bit overkill for off roading, but I doubt we'll get anything like the currently available Australian 70 series. Time will tell!

Ford hasn’t completely ditched the V8. In fact they recently came out with a 430hp 7.3! liter V8 nicknamed ‘Godzilla’. :eek2:

I've got a real tough time believing they'll ditch the 5.7L. I'd think it far more likely that they'd either rework it slightly, or make it the engine base option for the lower models (e.g., Tundra Grade, SR) with the TT as an option, and the TT as the base for the higher models (Platinum, Limited, TRD Pro).

Before I bought this truck in March, I test drove all of the trucks from the big 3, and IMHO, the only engine that got close, as far as power delivery goes, was the Hemi in the Ram, followed possibly closely by the 5.0L in the F150 (only due to the 10 speed). That doesn't count gearing - the closest I could find was a 3.92 in the Silverado/GMC. Mileage may not be its strong suit, but it's actually BETTER than the truck it replaced ('13 F150 5.0L), and right around what those are getting with the newer trucks (I know 2 guys with '19's or '20's, and they're getting a best of 17MPG in mixed driving; I'm getting 16.5 or so.)

All of the above being said, I don't buy the "OMG it's so antiquated" argument....and even if it WERE true, I'll take reliable over new any day.

Did you test drive the GM 6.2 or the 5.3 with GM's 10 speed (which is supposedly better than Ford's)?

3.92 is what Ram offers. Highest GM has now is 3.42 but supposedly the 8 and 10 speeds make up for not having 3.73s any more.

I'm sure whatever they come up with will sell well. There are a lot of people that can't stay content with what they have. That's why people trade in their perfectly fine vehicles every 3-4 years. They will sell a lot of these Tundras, even with a V6.

    A bunch
Same V8 discussion comes up every single thread looking forward - and it comes down to this: Toyota is not Ford, GM, Ram where their pickups are their bread and butter, the Tundra is a complimentary piece to the Camry, Rav4, and such. Because of this to keep costs down they are making a choice - go after the old school crowd that wants a V8 or go after the crowd that wants fuel mileage.

And if they do have a V8 in the next gen 2022 how would they sell very many 2021's? Get rid of the V8 and the 2021 MY may well end up as a very good sales year for the Tundra - win win for corporate.

Yes, they are all going to be built from the TNGA-F platform (doesn't mean they will all be the same size). That's been known for a while now.

I don't care how many cylinders or hair dryers the new motor has...as long as it has more power and equal or better fuel economy coupled with Toyota reliability.

I did. When I mentioned 'getting close' I meant across similar configurations. The closest price-wise was a Chevrolet with the 5.3; while not at all a bad engine, it didn't feel to me to be as responsive as the 5.7L was, though that could have been the transmission more so than the engine itself.

The 6.2 is a NICE setup, but as you said, it comes with a 3.42, and to get that engine, I would have ended up paying about $6K more than I did for a Tundra. For the same thing in a GMC it would have been another $2500 or so.

And yeah, I drove GM's 10 speed vs. the Ford 10 speed, and I definitely felt a difference.

You would think they would just do like Ford and have the eco option with the smaller engine and then still offer the big engine for those who want the bigger option. I don’t ever off-road except for the occasional thing at the hunting camp like going to jump off a tractor and I never tow anything so the smaller one would be fine for me. I do have a 2 hour round trip commute so a little better MPG wouldn’t be bad. I didn’t get the Tundra for gas mileage though.

It’s really surprising that Toyota doesn’t at least have a hybrid Tacoma at least. Not that I would buy it.

Kind of funny this continually pops up every month or so. Check some of my older posts from the end of last year to the beginning of this year. Bottom Line...it is happening and the wheels have been in motion for quite some time. No one wants to believe it but the 5.7 is GONE after the 2021 model year. It has been confirmed in many circles yet people still want to call BS. I agree, its a real waste to retire the 5.7 for the Tundra, BUT that is why I bought the 2020. I have owned many Tundras, every 2 -3 years a new one hits the driveway because of our unique situation. I don't want the V6 nor the hybrid TT V6 at this time, so this is the last Tundra for quite some time for me. I am sure Toyota is putting out a great package with the MY22 and up but for me the good ol fashioned V8 is bueno.

Call it trolling, or whatever. I am 100% positive on my previous statements.

If/when Toyota does retire the 5.7L, if they replace with anything other than another proven V8 it will just make our 5.7L trucks hold their resale value that much longer.

I’m open to change because I like Toyota’s, but I love the V8 motors. I gues we will have to wait and see, many say they will not buy anything less than the V8, but many on here are just like me and loyal to Toyota’s. I don’t believe there will be many v8 options in half ton pickups in 3-5 years... if any.
