Enjoy! I think it was 109 or something here but it actually sprinkled a bit ago and cooled off a bit.

Really, I like my MIL. Except she's politically extreme. I won't get into that, except to say when she starts on a rant at a gathering, I'll say something totally opposite and leave the room. Even if I agree with her, I just do it so everyone else can feel the pain. My wife think's I'm an asshole sometimes.

I liked her from the first time I met her. It's a long story, but one I like to tell. So get a beer and settle in, or skip to the next post. Warning, explicit language ahead.

I met my future wife at VA Tech, then called VPI&SU. In early 1979 we made the first trip for me to meet the family. It was shortly after Jimmy Carter put a grain embargo on Russia, this is relevant.

We took a Greyhound bus from Blacksburg, VA to Springfield, VA. My future wife asked for two things. Don't cuss around my parents, you cuss more than anyone I know. Don't drink so much around my parents, you drink more beer than anyone I ever met. I agreed.

Both of her parents worked in DC and were supposed to pick us up at the bus station. We sat on the sidewalk for about 4 hours waiting for them. When they got there my girlfriend asked what took you so long. Her mother went off. The fucking farmers were on their fucking tractors fucking up the fucking streets. They were doing donuts on the fucking mall. Harry's hanging out the window shouting fuck you, you fucking farmers. They threw a fucking goat over the fucking white house fence. That was the national gathering of farmers to protest the embargo.

    OK, cussing covered.

The next night her parents hosted a cocktail party. Her mother got a German stein that held three beers, filled it and gave it to me. She refilled it constantly whenever it got down to about half. At one point she grabbed my ass while I was leaning over to get in the refrigerator. The next morning she looked at me over the table and said you have the most beautiful brown eyes.

Drinking covered. Flirting? I didn't expect that.

Even though it was 51 years ago, I still remember it like it was yesterday. That was only the beginning. There was the time when my wife dropped us off at the liquor store while she went to the grocery store. When she came back to pick us up we were passing a brown bag on the curb in front of the store. Or when my MIL's second husband took a nap on the mall and we covered him with newspapers, put an empty in his hand and took pictures of people staring at him...

I usually smoke my pork butts on a Weber Smoky mountain but you got to babysit the charcoal so much I thought I'd give this a try.

It is a constant first world struggle. My neighbor's river birch drops something 365 days a year. After a large storm or hurricane, there's stuff in mine that I don't think is indigenous to north america. Water is crystal clear though.
Did you say "had"? Dang, I'm the pool boy here. As in I just cleaned the pool today.
Anyway, this Mayvember has me annoyed. Normally I'd be waste deep with a rum drink right now. Water is still only 76 and it's rained for 5 days, with more tomorrow.
