2k18 TransferCase fluid

What’s everyone running with the recommended 75w.. just is at the 30k mark use the 4x4 5-10 a year.. mostly pavement pusher but do push it sometimes to triple digits ..
I see some of y’all using the ravenol 75w.. but I only see the ravenol 75w MTF-3.. is that what y’all are using? I see the last couple numbers are different. That’s on the bottle of ravenol.. This is the part number for the 75w Toyota oil

sorry to beat a dead horse but currently at 30k miles and gonna do the fluid changes this week.

 

I used the ravenol and have been more then happy with it. Transfer case seems to shift faster and smoother in and out

The Toyota fluid is crazy expensive. If I had gone with that, I'd be sopping up any spills and pouring back in the bottle!

When Toyota switched to the Borg Warner T case (2014?) is when the oil changed from the same as the diffs to this fancy 75W stuff.

 

Was it the MTF-3 Manual transmission 75w fluid? That’s the only one I see one their website..

I will going with this.

 

I use Royal Purple Synchromax and it worked well in the 4Runner I had. Will be running it in the Tundra also when the time comes to change out the transfer case fluid. Royal Purple states it is compatible with Toyota LF.

Yea bud I’m not a fan of royal purple products. This goes back like 15 years ago. I wish amsoil made 75w.. I remember a lot of tests between the two and what parts looked like after being put through the exact same test. I’ll stay with Amsoil.. but that’s my preference and everyone has their own but I appreciate the info.

 

That's cool, we all have different experiences. I like Amsoil also and use it in everything else including my small engine stuff, but as you mentioned they do not make a Toyota transfer case compatible fluid. The Synchromax is the first Royal Purple product I have ever used and the only reason I tried it is because it is compatible and Toyota LF costs what, $75 a quart? Ridiculous! An as mentioned it was great in my 4Runners tcase. Worked better than stock.

 

Consider Royal Purple Synchromax. I use it in my 4runner and its long lasting and incredibly smooth. I use 4wd frequently.

Haven't used in the Tundra yet, because it only has 1300 miles on it, but well before 30k ill change diff and transfer case fluids. Royal Purple is listed as a direct replacement for Toyota OEM fluid.

Also the BW case fill and drain plugs don't use a crush washer to seal. When I pulled mine out it looked like Teflon tape or something similar on the threads.

I checked online and in my Haynes manual, no mention of it so I torqued them back to spec and will be checking for leaks. So far none

 

@Wallygator amen to that it’s a lot for the OE Toyota stuff.
@Backslider appreciate it but I ordered the Redline oil. They make hella good product an used them in my motorcycles too.

I ordered 3 qts of the Redline. Gonna squeeze a little of the new stuff in their to push out the old stuff.

 

I use Redline in both differentials, Royal Purple in the transfer case. Either are a great choice imo.

I will say that after switching from Toyota OEM to Royal Purple in my 4runner, shifting into 4h at any speed is undetectable by noise or thump. It really, really smoothed it out. Wearing it in might be part of that too, as it has just over 30k miles on it and is still a baby.

Unnecessary to do the t case at 30k, just do the diffs

 

I did all the fluids in my 4runner at 20k. Transfer case was in poopy shape and both diffs were worse. I think it all oils probably had the lubricity and chemical make up to continue working well, but I felt better changing them. That said, my 4runner is 70% offroad use.

 

@chasenicholas93 I ordered the redline.. and yea I do notice the switching back into 2H from 4H does take some time and not super smooth hopefully the new oil will help. I’ll keep y’all posted when it comes in an I swap all fluids.. should be sometime this up coming week.

 

I switched all my fluids to AMSOIL. Just looking for the best solution for the tranfer case.

 

heavy off-road you’ll definitely need to do every 30k or even more frequent. normal road use, I’d probably do t-case every other diff fluid swap

 

Yea I’ve been researching the transfer case for months and the Redline is the best suitable one in my non professional opinion lol... look it on their website

Yes I am but there is multiple threads about this that are old or just never finish lol..

 

Alrighty fellas took me but two weeks to finally get to it but I finished the front an rear diffs an t/case. I ordered the 80w90 severe gear from amsoil direct in the quart size bottles not the ez pack for $10 a quart after becoming a member. Also order 70/75w redline oil for the transfer case which was about $17 a quart. Asked the ALL the dealers an they didn’t know what I talking about for 75w trans case fluid they used 80w90-

75w-90 or 75w-140 I was like wtf lol..
1. I used 6 quarts for the diffs I let them drain out then ran about 10oz extra through them.
2. I used 2.5 quarts for the t/case and did the same and ran a little extra to flush out old fluid.
Drain an fill plug were extremely/scary lose on the t/case.

I noticed the truck switched in an out of 4WD faster and was a lot smoother. After i drained the t/case you can tell right off the back it’s not the same as regular gear oil used in the diffs.

After I filled each the first time I went around the block went through 4H/4L and went under an diffs were good but t/case needed a few ounces more. Front diff and t/case could’ve waited till 60-75k miles easily. And rear diff was a little darker but was expected as it was used more. Truck still averages 12.8 mpg at 75mph lol. Did find a piece of metal attached to the magnet‍♂️.

These are the fluids. Also bought Amsoil grease but truck had no zerk fittings. Also the rear diff plugs with the piece of metal that I found. All in all took me about an hour to do. Also if you become a member to amsoil it’s $10 for a 6 month subscription. Saved like $30 by doing so.

75w-90 is like $18 but 80w-90 is $13 in the plastic quart bottles an like i said if your a member the quarts are $10.05.. I know everyone has their preference on oils I just like Amsoil and Redline is compatible the 75w Toyota t/case oil. 2nd pic shows piece of metal right under the napkin on the cardboard

Side note had the truck loaded with about 200 6ft tall fence pickets in the back doing roughly 65mph with tow/haul and truck was averaging 15.3mpg on a straight road lol

Check both driveshafts for zerk fittings. My 2015 has them.

 

Sadly they don't seem to exist on the 2019 +

I had a 2016 that had them, now I have a 2020 and they don't exist.

That's like $1.25 saved per truck. Adds up!
