Toyota Tundra Secondary Air Injection Pump 2012

If the pumps are having issues then the valves are probably about to go as well. I would say replace them to make sure they don't do any damage to the new pumps when they go out.

 

Nor7, do you have a link as to which valves to purchase? I have a 2011 Tundra also, but I saw some valves on Amazon and am not sure exactly if these are the ones I need. I just replaced my pumps and kept the same trumpet.

Take a look at this TSB and it will tell you which valve you need based on your engine size.

 

Also, if I were you I would have put on the new trumpet, thats one of the primary causes of water intrusion into the pumps.

 

I saw on the TSB what looks like a cover I guess you can buy seperately and throw over it. I was excited that I even replaced the pumps, that I just threw the same trumpet on!

 

The cover is riveted to the trumpet but you can't buy it separately. You have to buy the new assembly. Its the cheapest part in that whole system, less than $30 I think so its worth spending the $30 to protect the other $600 worth of new parts.

 

Ordered it! Hoping to have it and install it by Friday. Found it for $25 on Ebay. Thanks for your help and advice!

 

HEEEELLLLLLPPP!!!! OK, trying to stay cool here, but I replaced my pumps, trumpet, and both valves. Had my battery unplugged that whole time. I plugged the battery back in and cranked the Tundra up and the Check Engine light came on again. I read the codes and it had both PO442 and a new P0418 code as permanent. This is starting to get really irritating.

 

About to go back through it per your advice. Just needed some cool down time. I just purchased this truck 2 months ago and didn't realize the problems this 2011 Tundra came with. Will advise on the re-inspection.

 

ColoradoTJ, so I went back to my truck and back tracked and found one of my pumps unplugged. Ran the code reader and the check engine light turned off, but it's still showing both of the codes as permanent! Do I have to go to a dealer to get these removed?

wow i spent yesterday and today on the phone with the dealer finally they found the extended warranty part of this was more of a pain in the butt to get them to hunt it down.

monday its going in to get looked out then they will tell me if they are going to fix it under warranty.
got my lights thursday and im in limp mode now

 

Great thread folks! I have a 2012 5.7 and I have been dealing with this issue for about a year. No warranty/recall on this model as stated in this thread. The bypass (offered by Paul) features on eBay isn’t compatible with FlexFuel.

The first time this happened I cleared the 2442 and was good for ~100 miles but then it came back.... and kept coming back. I worked with the local dealer and got the same $2500 estimate. BS for all the reasons listed so I called Toyota and they offered to pay the dealer $1390 toward the repair. With a 1 year warranty I figured that was pretty good so I went for it. ...

The dealer replaced -
2 - 17610-0S030 Pump Assembliy
1 - 25701-38120 Emmision Valve Set
2 - 17376-38920 Air Tube Gasket
1 - 17621-0S012 Air Pump Inlet

719 miles and BAM - limp mode and 2442. Back to the dealer Monday I guess. Pretty frustrated.

 

oh that sucks. They extended the warranty to 2011 last year so if I were you, keep all your receipts in case they add the 2012 to the warranty later this year.

 

My 08’ has been bypassed for around a year now without any issue since. No codes. Milage actually improved slightly since is the only side effect.

 

Well.... I got in to this forum searching the web for a solution to the same problem on my 2012, I have found lots of good informations here. Code P2441.
"Secondary air injection system switching valve stuck close bank 1"
I have called the Toyota Customer Experience Center and they told me that the are no warranty or recall issued for my model year "at this time"....
I will try to go to the dealer, and to my local mechanic, tomorrow to see what they are going to say about it.
So far the truck seems to work fine, a part from the check engine light. Could I run in to more problems if I keep drivin it until I decide what to do???

 

Did you hear anything back? I just got news that my 2008 has the exact same issue. They Quoted me $2800 to complete the work.

I see the bypass that someone posted from ebay. This mechanic said that moisture gets in there and seemed to indicate that it will eventually ruin the motor. Is that true? What is the side effect of the bypass? I see one on here running for a year, but what about 10 years? What's the long-term affect?

My mechanic here in MO said that if they see the mod at all, they will fail you in inspection too. But in looking at videos, I think it would be tough to spot unless you are specifically looking for that.

 

Is there any need to replace the main air pumps that are near the wheel well when replacing a secondary air injection pump? My understanding is that the main air pumps gather water and shoot it up into the secondary pumps. I'm getting ready to do this job. Just wondering if the replacement secondary air injection pump will quickly suffer the same fate as the first.
