New AGM battery issue.

I bought an 24F X2 Power AGM battery a few months ago.
Everything has been fine, until the last week or so.

Seems when it sits overnight or while I'm at work, there is a slight hesitation on startup.
It starts, but it hesitates a fraction of second, kind of like when the stock battery started to go bad.
Stock battery lasted me 4 years.

My daily drives to work are only 13 miles each way.
Is it charging enough in that short period of time?

Am I just overthinking this?
I don't want to get stranded and needing a jump.

I was told by Batteries Plus if I ever had to return it, it could take them a day or 2 to test it.
Can't really go without the truck for that long.

Should I have bought a regular battery for it?

What say you?

 

I wonder if you have a fuel pump issue.

 

I would see how many amps the starter is pulling. It could be the starter/solenoid thing is it a 5.7?

 

On start up do you turn the key to the "acc" position then pause a moment? Then turn to start?

if not try that.

 

Stupid question but have you checked if the terminals are tight?

 

Don't know if this is your case (regarding Cons) and just food for thought:

An AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery contains a special glass mat separator that wicks the electrolyte solution between the battery plates. This material’s design enables the fiberglass to be saturated with electrolyte – and to store the electrolyte in a “dry” or suspended state rather than in free liquid form. As the battery works, electrolyte is transferred from the glass mat to battery plates as required. The mat contains enough electrolyte for the battery to deliver its full capacity and – should the battery case become damaged or the battery is tipped on its side – its electrolyte will not spill.

Pros: These batteries are referred to as maintenance free batteries, and do not require watering service. Since there is no free liquid and minimal gassing, AGM batteries can perform better than flooded batteries in applications where maintenance is difficult to perform.


Cons: Users should take care when charging this battery as over and under charging can affect their life and performance. AGM batteries perform most reliably when their use is limited to the discharge of no more than 50% of battery capacity.

 

Check to see what your charging rate is at I purchased a hkb adjustable alternator booster fuse to raise the charging profile to accommodate the AGMs I have a 3 mile work commute ......I am also in the process of replacing one of my odyssey pc 1400 batteries under warranty it is only 3 months old but come to find out it has loose positive post causing a similar starting issue.

 

I think there was a bad batch of 24F. My brother got one in February and just had it replaced under warranty a month or so again. Worked fine for a bit then stopped taking a charge and output like 5v

The new one has been totally fine.

I’ve got a x2 27f in each of my trucks and haven’t had any issues.

 

Had the same issue with a 27F, got an alternator fuse booster by HKB and no problems since

I agree you should just have it load tested before worrying about other dire warnings. Lots of bad batteries out there, start simple, its usually the most accurate. Good luck.

 

Voltage was 11.8 when I got in the truck this morning.
It barley started.
Called Batteries Plus and they said the voltage should have never dropped that low overnight.
Going to run up there and have them test to see if the truck is charging the battery.

 

Batteries Plus said the battery was a little low on CCAs.
Voltage was 12.6 by the time I got there.
They said my truck charging system is fine.

The gave me a loaner battery and they are going to test the one I bought.
I should hear from them is a few days..
Pretty nice they gave me a loaner...

 

As others have suggested a HKB will help while the truck is running.
13 miles each way is likely not enough to recharge the battery. Low RPM's and idle also do not help charge the battery.
Another suggestion is a get a trickle charger that has an AGM mode and hook it up 1 weekend a month to top off the battery.
It looks like you have some accessories installed on your inner fender apron by the fuse box. Have you confirmed there's no power drain from that?

 

The only thing drawing power is my alarm/remote start.
Never had a problem with it in 5 years with the 2 other batteries I owned...

I picked up the battery today.
The charged it Monday and kept it day to check the voltage.
They said the battery is good.
They mentioned a possible parasitic drain, but I had no problems with the loaner battery they let me use.

Had the dealership do a oil change and tire rotation today.
Had them test the battery and charging system.
It all checked out.



I'll see how it goes.
I'm thinking I just don't drive enough per day to keep it charged.
If it gets low on voltage again, I'll have to decide whether HKB or monthly trickle charge is worth it, or eat the $300 I spent on this one and go back to a standard flooded lead-acid battery.

 

There is a mod that increases your charging amp output to the battery

it’s less expensive than the hkb

I’ll find it and report back

 

I was having the same issues but solved it with the hkb fuse and using the ctek charger. I may be mistaken but apparently the stock alternator doesn’t it charge optimally. My agm has been running smoothly so far.

 

Would I need both, or just one or the other?
How often do you charge it?
Which HKB did you get?
Adjustable or fixed?

If you have an alt-s fuse, a gm Diode can be used

 

I wanted to be redundant so I purchased both. If I had to choose one, I’d probably go with the ctek charger and like others have mentioned, charge it one a month or so. Used the ctek to fully restore its charge then the hkb takes care of it daily.

Just an update;
I ended up buying the HKB Electronics Alternator Voltage Booster .

I bought it the end of May, it arrived today so about 6 weeks.
That time frame was stated when I ordered it.

Immediately after installation it bumped the voltage up from 13.3/13.5 to 13.7/13.9.
May go high as the battery charges.
Idle (engine off) battery used to sit at 12.5, after only a 30 minute drive it is idle at 12.7.

Used it once a month ago to top off the battery.
Hooked it up and let it overnight.
I'll use it again if the battery starts lagging again.
Hopefully the booster will keep the charged level up.

 

Also installed one of these “Toyota oem” voltage meters. Nice way to monitor levels.

 

Can I ask where you bought that meter?

 

Is that a constant on voltmeter? or is it on the keyed ignition?

It only fits in the far right slot for me - the shape of the socket was either too large or small for the other slots. I have it hooked up to a fuse that only powers up when the key is in the on position.

 

I have a magnetic mount underneath the grab handle so it works really well regarding powering any devices as opposed to having a cord going across the dashboard from the center of the dash. And it frees up a slot on my scangauge as I was monitoring it through that. But once you install the hkb and charge it periodically, it’s more of peace of mind than anything else. By then your battery should be good to go. Mine has been so far.

Edit- took a closer look. your truck has a very different button layout than my 2016. I might order one anyways. Cheap to try out.
