Now that I've really gotten hooked on the Gen 1 Tundras, I've been keeping my eyes open for good deals. They are out there but go fast!

My first was a lifted 4x4 and not particularly practical for trips to Lowes for lumber. So I've been hunting for a 2WD model in good condition. Every time I call or email on one it's got a line of people looking at it and they sell fast!

But I found one this week. The owner had been asking $4500, then lowered to $4000. Early this week I told him my max was $3000 if it had no major problems. He said others were coming to look at it and I figured it would be sold. Well this morning he messaged me that the other people no-showed and if I was interested it was mine for $3k. It was only 10 minutes away so I got over there in a hurry.

I inspected it and drove it at highway speeds. Very nice pickup with bed liner and cover. Access cab. 240,000 miles, I'd say about a 9/10 condition overall with good service records that have some holes. It will need at minimum fluid changes and timing belt, water pump, thermostat, LBJ x4, etc. All this is to be expected. Carfax was clean of any issues (loss, theft, salvage) and had some good records and all passed emissions.

Clean, exterior and interior. One owner, and old guy who never abused it. The proverbial perfect seller. A single owner, old guy, who planned to keep it forever and only used it for suburban errands. Only reason to sell was because wife had troubles getting into it and they got a AWB Rav4 instead and love it. Fair service records. No accidents or loss. Tow package installed and it seems he did some light towing. Bed liner and cover. For 18 years old and a quarter million miles it looks to be in very good condition.

Three grand! In this market this seems pretty fantastic given that nearly destroyed old Fords, Rams, and Chevys are commanding three grand and Tundras in this condition are 5-7 thousand dollars. I feel I did well.

Not to turn this into a religious discussion, but the seller and I are both strong Christians so we shared some thoughts about this transaction coming together. It was pretty cool.

Looking at that picture up into the bottom of the engine of a 2WD amazes me. There is so much more room without the front differential. Looks rust free under there, too.

This was on Craigslist. I've been scouring CL and Facebook marketplace, along with the various car search engines for weeks. Seems like all the good deals were cost/distance prohibitive, like that one down in Sacramento someone posted (a great deal, but expensive to go look at and buy). This was in my back yard!

Related on where to find those scarce gems, I actually found my own on the Nextdoor neighborhood app. Someone a few miles from me had it listed there and only there.

Doesn’t the Bible say "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth..." Just a little levity from one Christian brother to another....
Nice find! Never seen under any Tundras other than my own...looks strange with no skid plate...Congratulations on the new truck!!!
