Anyone regret getting a double-cab?

Hi everyone, looking to buy a new Tundra but not sure between the crewmax and double cab, the savings are a great on a double cab but I'm afraid of the lost interior room. Let me know what you think! Thanks

 

Do you need the bed or the cab space. That’s all it comes down to.
Personally I bought a truck to use it as a truck I.e. hauling stuff in the bed. Crew max is more like a sequoia with an uncovered cargo area imo.

 

Gonna use it to haul as i own my own business, but i do have 2 young kids that i would like to take around as well

 

I don't have kids and prefer bed space but if I want a Platinum next I have zero choice. Every thing I see says if you have car seats get CM. Have to get CM on top two models.

 

I went DC for the bedspace and would have preferred the long bed but I was in a pinch and the dealer wouldn't have one for awhile.

The CM backseat is huge, lots of room for the kids, but I haul grown men around and haven't run into any issues that made me regret a DC.

IMO bed space is more valuable, especially after upgrading from a Tacoma with the 5' bed.

 

Are you needing to haul something that will only fit in the longer bed? we got a crewmax for the carseat space and general storage in the cab. i came from a 6ft bed taco and i do miss the extra foot sometimes, but i use the cabin space a lot more than i do the bed. it just made sense for us. plus, if i NEED to haul something that wont fit in the bed, rental trailers are cheap. i dont regret our decision one bit. we can get 4 adults comfortable in there with a carseat.

 

If the kids are fairly young a DC will be fine, even with car seats. If they will be teenagers in a few years and bigger, then maybe a crew max for extra comfort and leg room. CM is great for passenger room, but the DC is no slouch either. Just not as comfortable once you've been in the back of a CM.

yea coming from an access cab made this feel like i was in a 15 passenger van.

 

I had a Tacoma as well, and wanted bigger too. Didn't think it was that big of a difference until I test drove my first tundra.

 

Well I had a Ram Rebel before the Tacoma and that was huge. I just wanted something reliable but ended up hating the Tacoma, felt so unrefined, underpowered and cramped so I swap-a-lease’d it . Realizing how much I missed having a truck, I’m back in the market for one.

I got the double cab because I needed the bed, I couldnt justify a shorter bed than I had on my Taco. Coming from that truck to the Tundra, theres tons of room. That said I have no pets or kids, I typically carpool with some pilot friends and as Ive said ‘if you dont like it, drive your own vehicle to the site then’. I bought the truck to use as a truck, not a minivan.
I see nothing but CMs here so people are probably getting by with them just fine. Depends on what you wanna use the truck more for.

 

I had a DC when I was single/engaged/newly-married.

Once I put a car seat in the back, I knew I had to change cab sizes for when the car seat went to forward facing.

I use it as a truck almost every weekend and haven’t had an issue with bed size.

 

I had an F-150 Supercrew with 5.5’ bed. I hauled both kids and stuff. Every time I used it for hauling stuff I always wished I had a longer bed.

I now have a Double Cab and never wish I had a larger back seat. It works to haul people. I LOVE the longer bed, makes such a huge difference if you are using your truck as a truck to haul stuff like lumber, building materials, moving furniture and other things.

Last thing to note is the DC crash test ratings are better than the CM.

 

Honestly I think there is plenty of room in the backseat of my Double Cab. Granted I'm an Empty Nester but I've had my adult daughter and even my parents in the back for trips around town. Each time I asked if they had enough room and they said it was good.

If you are unsure, take the whole family on a test drive.

 

I love my double cab, I wanted the 6.5’ bed and an adult can fit in the back seat.

 

I have 3 kids and at the time I got the truck, a black lab, so I needed the interior space when hauling our camper. I also like the looks of the crew max more. The rear doors of the DC look weird to me. Petty, I know, lol. And the deal breaker is that glorious sliding rear window in the crew max. I love that thing!

 

My DC has a sliding window tho?
Or are you talking that fancy window that rolls down like my sister’s 4Runner has? If so.. jellies. That shits awesome..

they make kits to covert but I cant justify tearing the back of my new truck apart. Wont miss what Ive never had I guess..

 

That's the one! I used to have a 99 4runner that had it. When I saw that the crew max had it as well, it was game over.

 

I just got the DC yesterday. I wanted the bed space. My kids are 13 and 16 and my 16 is almost 6' tall Im 5'10". My wife drove it around for the first time yesterday.. I put my son in the passenger seat and i sat behind him. I was fine... Knees didnt touch the front seat and I would do say an hour or so drive back there. Would i take it on a 12-hr drive family vacation? Probably not. My wife is 5'6, behind her was crewmax space. There are killer deals to be had with Crewmax leases, but in the end, i hated the 5' bed in my ridgeline and Im very happy with the DC. The way i test it is the way "Alex on Autos" on YT tests it. I put the driver seat in the position i would normally drive and then i get into the back seat behind myself. I tried that in the Tacoma, no way.... my knees were spread around the front seat, couldnt really get out of the back seat area without a struggle.

I also considered the Ram 1500 and their Quad cab was smaller and not as comfortable. Gorgeous interior in the RAM, but its not a Toyota!

I thought i wanted a Tacoma as well.. test drove one, was ok with it, but 'underwhelmed' coming from a first gen Ridgeline. I felt cramped and i dont know.. something wasnt right.. Test drove the DC Tundra and i was sold.

 

DC here. The DC has plenty of space in the back seat area. Regularly haul 4 adults and as others have said I rode in the back once just to see how it was. I was fine with that said I'm a shorter guy, but I'm also fat.

 

Double cab AND an 8' bed... why not have both?

 

I had an 05 double cab that had the sliding rear window and i loved it. That's why i had to get a crewmax. I don't need the room but once you get use to the rear window it was hard for me not to have it. If i need to haul something bigger than the bed i have a trailer. But it's your money get what you want or need.

 

I regretted the DC so I sold it and found a Regular Cab Long Bed,I love it!

 

Toyota could solve many problems by simply making the bed longer on the Crewmax.

I have a Crewmax and it is superior to anything on the market from any manufacturer, when it comes to hauling big people for long distances in the backseat - comfortably. I go on many hunting and fishing trips all over the country with buddies - thousand mile trips.


That said, if you are only doing day trips with kids then go with the DC for the bed space. Just depends on your usage.

 

Both are fine set ups. A DC has a good size back seat, but a CM is absolutely cavernous.

I wound up in a CM for a few reasons:

1. You can never add interior space if you need more. If the bed is ever lacking you do have the option to pull a trailer.
2. Did a road trip in my WRX and the rear passengers wished for more room on a regular basis. Downsizing to one vehicle I wanted to be sure that my truck was comfortable for any passengers I might have, and with the seats folded up there is a ton of space for the groceries, coolers, etc.
3. Originally would have been happy with either... then a coworker with a CM opened that back door, flipped up the seat, and rolled down the ENTIRE back window. I was done for.

 

Test drive both and get a feel for the interior space. The DC fit perfect for my daily use.

 

CM and have the dealer throw in a tailgate extender. Now you have the best of both worlds...
