Pine needles aren't as bad as fir needles.

Pine trees usually grow in drier parts of the state and their needles are long. Fir grows in wetter areas and their needles are short. I have fir and they sheed needles like crazy and they get into everything. I can't keep my house gutters clean.

Good info, It sounds crazy but one of the many reason we moved out of the city was to get away from the trees. Out in the country I don't have the roof and gutter problems we had in the city.

It's important to keep your mower blades real sharp. I have a old bench grinder and I dress a nice edge on them after every two or three mowings. I have two sets of blades so I just swap them out.

I have more roof and gutter problems than I ever did in the city. I have a lot of 40'+ trees and while they provide good shade during hot days they are a big problem otherwise.

Well my mods are now on hold. Was going to get tires and maybe a bumper. Now that money has to go to replacing my ac/furnace as the ac has finally gone out. 20+ years old, time for upgrade.

This looks almost exactly like my back yard. I feel the same way about how it grows. I like to go a couple weeks between mows but the last time because of the warm weather, it looked unmowed in just a week.

Bleach is spot on about turf maintenance, he must work or has worked in a local government agency's Parks Dept or the golf course maintenance field ;) Refreshing to hear actually sound knowledge. I'd like to add to make sure to pick a seed variety that thrives where you live. For us on the westside, fine fescues and rye grasses do best. Fescues do better in shaded areas then rye, but rye is more resilient (used on sports fields). The best is to have a PNW blend with both ryes and fescues, but with the addition of natives like bentgrass and red fescue. Keep the turf healthy and fed with Dolomite (lime+Mg), Spring, Summer, and Fall fertilizer applications and water deep every few days as needed when required. If you do this, along with good mowing practices (mulch, sharp blades, alternate pattern), you'll have a nice lawn with no real need to treat for weeds. The ones you may get, just pull by hand when they arise depending on the size of your yard. If you really need to, spot spray with a 2,4-D product to treat the weeds in the turf. Aeration is also quite important for soil and root health, it can actually be done by hand with a pitch fork if you want a workout and your lawn isn't too big. You could always rent a walk behind aerator once a year. All depends on how nice of a lawn you want or how dedicated you are. Once you've established a healthy lawn, it's actually easy to maintain. I find it a nice escape and a source of pride when I have visitors.

Nope just mowed mine or parents, grandparents lawns one way or another for over 45 years. I just figured out what works best. Also automotive maintenance techniques apply over to lawn equipment. I've kept my Craftsman 50" riding mower going strong for nearly 25 years. Most people have junked their same mowers years ago. Most of my other garden tools are over 40 years old, some ever more than that. What is made now is just plain junk.

Wow! Thanks for the replies gents. Seems I may be on the right track just need to figure out some particulars. I didn’t want to tag the last page for responses but I am going to read everything again tonight while at work.

For reference I am now not looking to do
ground cover/ivy stuff. To be fair that was my plan. Nothing wrong with this except I am spending a bunch of money to get rid of this. The wall out front turned out differently then I was asking but in a good way. This lead to the possibility to have a small “yard” and some colorful flowers in a bed.
Here is a pic of the front before:

    A2E12184-CAF2-4C39-89D1-47E297E29BEE.jpg

And currently(not after since its not done yet)

    19D49598-ACB9-47B9-B414-06C569AC1829.jpg
I think so far perennial rye and some lime is in the list. Just need to figure out some sandy loam first then seed then mulch or just soil we have then seed then top soil blend(mulch, sandy loam etc.)

    Hey Locals,
Got a question. I am looking to do a 2.5 front coil lift I don't think it matters which brand I use for the the lift, for this answer. Would like to get a set of 17" rims. Do you know what offset and size tire I can use, that would require no BMC. Or major plastic trimming. I don't care if the mud flaps have to come off. I am not looking for the tires to stick way out and I don't want to use spacers.
Thanks if you know the answer.

    Cheers

Not sure on tire size. Should be around a 33" tire. But 17's for wheels need close to a zero offset to clear the calipers I do believe. So they will be sticking out a bit.

These are my notes from the forum on tires sizes that can fit on my truck w/o any issue. Your front level should make the truck equivalent to the Pro.
      • Stock: P275/65 R18; 32.1 x 10.8"
      • Will fit: 275/70 R18; 33.2 x 10.8"
      • Will fit: 285/65 R18; 32.6 x 11.2"
      • Should fit: 285/70 R18; 33.7 x 11.2"
There's a guy in the "what have you done to your truck today - 3rd gen" section that just put 285s on this truck and it looks awesome. He's running a '20 Pro...

Right...I was just putting that on there for reference. Should have clarified that the overall tire size and diameter (in inches) should be a good frame of reference.

Gotcha, that makes sense. 2.5" lift up front should be equal to a pro. Should be able to get clearance for 33-34" tires depending on offset. But the offset will be key if he doesn't want to do a bmc.

Sucks that giant wheel well seems to have limitations that really keeps your tires fairly restricted w/o more serious mods. If Toyota was smart, they'd make the next truck clear 35x12s with only a level...

Right I don't want to do a BMC. When I look at websites for 17" rim they call it an aggressive fit " some modifications will have to be made". But I would think that if I bought a 17X9 and keeped the tires around 33" I should be ok, right? They would not stick out any further. I would rather go taller and little wider, than really wide.

You should check out https://www.customwheeloffset.com and look up 17" wheels. Pretty sure it's a 0 offset that will fit with the brakes on our tundras. Depending on width of the wheel as well, they will stick you wheel out any where from 2-3 inches compared to stock. Going from +60 offset to a 0 offset is a lot. Width of the tire may affect your fit more so than the height.
