Speeding on my street, what can I do...

So I live down this very thin 3 mile county road (not even a center stripe), where the speed limit is only 35 mph. Since it's a country road, people act like idiots and fly down it, doing 60 or more a lot of times. I guess the rules and law doesn't apply to them.

Consequently, I've had several pets get run over and killed, Deer and other wildlife are always laying dead on the side of the road. I've had enough of it and looking for ways to get the speed limit enforced and make people slow the F down. A bunch of new houses have been built and the way people speed is going to result in a fatality soon to someone's kid before it's all said and done.

What can I do? I've called the County Sheriff department a couple times now and plan to keep calling every day moving forward. They will either get down there or I'll become a huge pain in their ass. Can I get plate numbers and report them? I go 35-40 and constantly getting passed. I just need to know what I can legally and effectively do. I'm getting to the breaking point here.

 

Buy a black charger with blacked out base wheels.....sit outside in black and sunglasses (cowboy hat depending on where you live) holding a blow dryer aimed in their direction. It really works!

Orrrrr.....buy a bunch of light bulbs lay them in lines across the road at arbitrary points.

Buy/build speed bumps

Wonder if there's some sort of contraption you could build where if you trip a sensor going too fast, it triggers a spray paint or shit slinging gauntlet you can't avoid......hmmmm

 

You're on the right track, be a PIA. Enlist the neighbors to also become a thorn in the local Sheriff side. You could setup a surveillance camera to record the traffic on the road and take the video of the speeders to the Sheriff. Meet with or write the county executives about your concerns.

 

Do you have a friend who works for the local newspaper or a LEO? That would be a good "legal" start or use your own spike strip.

You're doing about all you can right now. Just keep pestering the police department. They write a few tickets out there then it should help slow it down a little.

 

Yeah, I'd like it to get it that "Dont drive fast down that street" mentality. I'm not trying to become a stick in the mud, but this is getting out of hand. No way you hit a deer or anything else going 35mph. Sure it may still happen on occasion, they can jump out at any time. But 90% of this is happening because people are hauling ass. The street is barely wide enough for 2 cars to pass.

 

Yep, I've already started looking at cameras to set up, and I think I'm going to get a dash cam so when people pass me. Then maybe set up a FB page for the neighbors along the street or something. Humm..

 

Go to the county road dept and ask how to file a complaint/concern about how unsafe the stretch of your road has become. I would think they would at least listen to you.

 

There are a lot of kids who live along the street. What I dont get is that they are building some of the more wealthy houses in our area along the street, yet still very little police patrolling.

I wouldn't waste your money on a camera or be a huge pain to your local LE. The camera won't do anything in court, nor anything for the PD.

I know it's a priority to you, and I see where you are coming from, trust me, but depending on the manpower and coverage area, it's likely unrealistic to expect a deputy there often. PD's are generally minimally staffed, therefore busy. There are always exceptions though.

I would get as many corncerned neighbors as possible and politely goto your municipality's meetings or bring it up to the Twp supervisors or Mayor, etc. Request if they can do something regarding signage, speed bumps, or by having the PD create a few random speed enforcement details. Add that the results of the detail will confirm or debunk your allegations of speeding in the area.

Be sure to give days of the week, times, and specific location you all seem to notice the violations.

Getting plate numbers helps, yes. You can report them and if you fill out a statement they could potentially charge someone based on your written statement. The issue is you aren't certified in radar or laser, so speeding is not what could be charged. If someone is recklessly passing you, there are other means that can be charged. In Maine there is "Driving to Endanger" and "Imprudent Speed." Usually even imprudent speed would have to be witnessed by an officer though. I live on a small neighborhood road and have recently voiced my opinions about speed at a neighborhood meeting. Fair warning to them all, my police department has permission to sit in my driveway to run speeds on the cars coming around the corner. Plus, being a former LEO that the majority of them know, they enjoy my coffee. Try to keep that dialogue open with the local police. Unless you're in an area that is really understaffed you will see results if you're the squeaky wheel.

 

Yes, go vigilante on all of them. I've had to do that in my neighborhood a couple of times with people acting like idiots.

You could always put roofing nails in the road at strategic places but then everyone would get flat tires, lol

 

I think I'm going to collect plates just for them as reference to the number of people speeding. If I'm going 35-40 and they wiz past me and down the road, I know they are going 55+. I also know that based on the large telephone poles along a part of our road, that it will take a vehicle 6-7 seconds to reach each one going the posted speed limit of 35. Anything less and you know for a fact they are speeding.

If it's unpaved, cut some deep ruts across the road, kind of like inverse speed bumps. The locals that slow down will barely notice, the speedsters will get tired of being bounced and slow down.

 

And put some nails in there too. That'll teach 'em

 

Put up a sign. "Today's idiot driver" Underneath put "White Camry with license # 456GT3" (or some such)

 

Ha.. It is paved, but far from perfect. Another reason why people dont need to be doing 60 down it. I wish it was unpaved at this rate.

 

I used to find out which house people were going to and put nails in their driveway. Then they disappeared, never showed up again because they would always bring up in the neighborhood that our street was laced with nails and screws. I'd also take off peoples license plates, pull their stickers out their windows and then call the cops and say there's a suspicious vehicle riding around. GUARANTEED TO WORK, just be stealth with it
