Another Tundra or Jump Ship

Yeah, I suspect you're right about the redesign so, since the GM and Ram 1500 have ratings, their HDs should be rated by next year.

Some anecdotal evidence to support you: my cousin, who started out as a GM guy (and currently has a Silverado 454SS he's rebuilding) currently has an F350 Powerstroke as his personal truck and a Ridgeline as his work truck, after getting rid of his Chevy Colorado Duramax with the lousy 8 speed automatic. He's tried a number of different half tons. His Ram was one of, if not the, worst.

 

I just watched a mechanic on you tube rate the 5 worst trucks to own, they were all RAM and Chevy.... I sold my 2015 durango a couple months ago (made my girlfriend mad) because i had to have the cam replaced at 32,000 miles and then at 38,000 the engine lite would not go off, turned out to be a issue with the charcoal box (O-ring) and the dealership said that was not covered under my 5 year/100,000 mile drive train warranty....they wanted $800+ to fix it.... i took it to my mechanic who did it for $150, I sold it after that.
I would love to have a RAM truck (and almost did in 2018 but got my tundra instead) but I need a reliable vehicle that wont turn into a money pit after the warranty expires.

 

Something else to consider that I just remembered: 9 of the 10 most stolen vehicles in Canada are F-Series from various years.

 

I am in a Silverado Double Cab for my vacation rental. Not impressed. Ride quality on par with or slightly inferior to my 11 year old Crewmax. Comparable engine performance. 10 year old design feel underneath a freshly redesigned face. Disappointing as I love the truck’s looks. May get crossed off the list after several days of wheel time has left me unexcited, unless it’s significantly updated in the next 2 years before I buy.

Good mileage though. Averaging 18mpg in mix of highway and stop and go with a normal driving style. I’d have to drive like a Grandma to get that in my Tundra.

 

Resist the "itch" of trying other brands. We've had a total of 9 Toyota trucks in the family and 1 Ram 1500 that I bought new in 2016 because it was $13k off MSRP. I had it for less than a year and went back to Toyota, Save yourself the trouble!

 

Off the subject, but I bought a 2018 GMC Canyon 4wd double cab “long bed-lol” 2.8 diesel.
No brake problems, zero trans or engine problems, 24.3 average mpg.
The only issue is that now gas is sub $2 and diesel is hovering at $3.25. My 04 Double cab gets 15-18 mpg, and have not had excessive repair issues, I am still driving it regularly with 328,000 miles on it. (Bought it new, still looks that way)

 

My 2019 duramax Denali their flagship of trucks was in the shop 5 times in 900 miles. Only half of them were from the DEF system. Everything else was build quality. I traded it for a new Raptor with a similar build quality issues. Said fuck that ,and went back to Toyota. Those trucks were more than twice what my new Tundra cost.

 

2 cents from an experienced appraiser in the car business. I have owned/driven just about everything available in the last 20 years. Off the showroom floor...truck dependability is largely influenced by the owner. Maintenance=more reliable. After over 20 years of appraising and putting used vehicles back together, this is what I have discovered...

Any vehicle other than a Toyota/Lexus is a gamble. People are seduced by the latest tech and colors. At the end of the day, when it comes to trucks....you may get lucky and get a good GM or Ford, or maybe even a Dodge. Every Toyota truck that comes in used is pretty much sold before it hits the lot. Lexus even more so. They take the time to "reverse engineer" their vehicles to pinpoint failing points. That is why they "appear" to be more basic. They find what lasts, and keep it. I would take a 250K mile Tundra before a 150K domestic in every case. They need almost no reconditioning and always get the most resale.

If you pull 9K lbs or more, you should really run a 250/350 anyway for safety if nothing else. We all would love Toyota to build a 3/4 TON... Every Tundra owner I ask has a similar story....owned many and they are the best with little to no service issues. My Platinum Tundra uses the same Leather as the Lexus. Lexus leather does not wear out unless you really abuse it. It has every other high line option needed. With a mild tune and basic upgrades, it dynos at over 450 hp with no turbo/supercharger. If you want gas mileage, buy a Prius. I bought a CPO (lease turn in) and it looks and smells like new.

Pure dependability is hands down a Tundra. Not everyone likes the way they feel (they are solid and not spungy). If you like Dodge, GM, or Ford....you like the way they feel, they are attractive to you. Mainly transmissions and random drive train issues plague them all. I would NEVER own a Dodge over 100K. It is a Service nightmare.

Seeing a Tundra with >250K miles is pretty common everywhere. They are still reliable and I would drive them coast to coast. The domestics, not so much. Over 150K and they are like going to play Roulet. You may get lucky, but if not....better dust off that credit card....

My paycheck used to depend on how I appraised cars for their value. It cost me money if I missed anything. I will NEVER own anything but a Toyota or Lexus(reliability is number one for me) . Now, if you want the latest greatest...(Raptor for example) it is your money and you spend it how you want. Just don't be too surprised when the turbos need maintenance and it is 4K. Gotta pay to play, right? Or, the DEF system in your new F250 goes out and Ford will not fix it. 5K later and you are good to go....

In my humble opinion, there is no question of which is "made better", Toyota. If you lease a truck, who cares, it is not yours anyway. If you don't like any part of the Toyota, don't buy it, that is why we have options(just be prepared for the visits to the Service Dept). Domestics utilize a "business model" called planned obsolescence. They feed their parts mill by only making parts that last so long. From my experience, all Fleet Depts would rather drive Toyotas, however "budgets" dictate otherwise. Deep discounts from GM and Ford keep their vehicles leading fleet sales. Fine by me, it keeps my Tundra's value up....

At the end of the day, drive what you want, you only live once. Just don't be surprised when you have 30 recalls and live in the Service Drive at your local Dealership. FYI...Dealers make no money selling you the car. All the money is made in the Service Dept.

 

Is the Canadian border open? I can leave the keys in my old F150 for someone to come by, eh?

 

Lol.. Had window leak in my 16 Silverado lt. They fixed it but I didn't realize that until months later. A little mold smell before I traded it in. Not to mention my actuator seized up on 4x4 high one winter but it was covered under warranty. And the lonely exhaust leak sound they refer to as direct injection! Sounds so loud going up hill or when you floor the truck. I prefer the growl of the tundra over this. At least it's designed to growl.

Like most mentioned, Toyota is not without flaw, but if it doesn't leave me stranded or kill me or my family I'm good with that.

I've updated mods , Android auto, so far it's got all of not most of what I need in a car/truck.

I have to admit the two things I miss in the Chevy is the soft steering wheel, takes no effort to turn it especially on tight parking lots. And the AWD mode.. that thing is awesome. No wheel spin uphill on wet surface at all, best for living in damp and wet environment like here in the PNW.

 

The first feature I think they should add to the 2022 Tundra is that automatic 4x4 (which I believe every other manufacturer has now) and the second is some kind of max towing/ max payload package for those who haul and tow heavy and could use more payload.
