Northern Manitoba camping

Still a little bit of snow here in the north, didn’t stop us from going camping!!

 

Brr. We generally try not to go until it's at least about +10 overnight.

 

Lol.. it was a bit chilly at night, nothing a fire can’t fix.. and some extra blankets

i can't imagine. i've worked in temps as low as -10 (F) in Iowa before, that was utterly miserable. the wind was howling, i don't know what the wind chill was, but it was cold.

 

That's a pretty typical winter daytime temperature here. We'll go ice fishing all day long at those temps. With proper clothing layers, you'll be just fine. Even better if you're working and moving around. I'm good with a merino wool base layer, hoodie and jeans down to about 10F. Below that, I throw on a jacket. I've worked outside in -40F, now that's cold and miserable. Just breathing hurts at those temps and you need to be really careful about not exposing any skin for longer than a couple minutes.

It does go the other way for many of us Canuckistanis though. It was 60 - 65F yesterday and I was driving with my truck in convertible mode while wearing a t-shirt and shorts. Anything above 75F and I start searching for the air conditioning. When I was in Hawaii, it hit 100F. If it hadn't been for the ocean, I probably would have died. LOL

 

My wife and I climbed Diamond Head, which isn't particularly steep or high, fairly early in the morning when it was mostly shaded and relatively cool and I thought I was going to die. I look like a tomato in the picture she took of me at the top and it's not sunburn.

 

You were smart about it. We did Diamond Head in the afternoon. That as a mistake. LOL.

 

My parents climbed it on their honeymoon back in the 80s. They got a late start because there was a marathon clogging up traffic in Waikiki and they said by the time they got there around noon, it was packed wall to wall with tourists.

 

The coldest day I have had to work was -43F with wind making it around -76F. Only went outside if needed. We usually stay inside for winter then try and live outside for most of the summer

 

Congrats on getting out, looks like a good time. Is that an enclosed awning room on your popup? Don't think I have ever seen one of those. Pretty cool.

i've always wondered how places such as northern Canada ever came to be settled in the first place. Sometimes, when I'm bored at work, I'll look on Google Earth for the most remote places up north I can find, and think 'what is wrong with you people?!'

 

yeah it’s an add a room for the camper. Works really well with the pop up camper for extra space. All the sides can roll up as well leaving a nice screened in area

 

Lol I wonder the same thing some days. I live in a small mining community that’s what brought people up here. It’s a great place if you like the outdoors and hockey

 

We’ve hit -40 here a few times but in the summer we’ve hit +103 , not very often but it does happen . That’s without the humidex .

We get some pretty extreme temps in KC. We get hotter than that, but nowhere near that cold. -5 F is about as cold as we ever get here. We seem to have high-ish humidity year round, so heat index and wind chill values are usually 10-15 degrees different from the actual temp.

 

Close to Hamilton so southern Ontario

 

That's really not very far north, I'm surprised you get that cold. What does that say for the poor people who camp in "northern Manitoba"??? @halfbakedstew77

 

lol makes you wonder doesn’t it... we still have a good 3” of ice on our lake. There were people still going out on their quads and ice fishing in places..

 

Yikes. At least our snow and ice has been gone since about late March.
