    Hi guys,

I have a 2017 Tundra and the parking brake has been lackluster at best. When it was brand new I had to push the pedal nearly all the way to get it to hold on a hill. Now it's just completely cocked and rolls even at full push. I used to be a bike mechanic so I'm aware that cables settle in and stretch over time, would I be correct in assuming I just need to take the slack out of the parking brake cable? Are the parking brake shoes normally adjusted correctly from the factory or will I have to do a complete overhaul? I've never driven with the e-brake on, I'm almost certain it's just the new cable stretching.

    Thanks in advance.

not sure this is related, but owners manual says:

    ■Drum-in-disc type parking brake system
Your vehicle has a drum-in-disc type parking brake system. This type of brake
system needs bedding-down of the brake shoes periodically or whenever the
parking brake shoes and/or drum are replaced. Have your Toyota dealer perform
    the bedding down operation.

How many clicks do you hear when you press the brake down all the way?

    Also from owners manual:
    Parking brake pedal travel*2 6 — 9 clicks

Thanks for the reply. I'll check the clicks when I'm out at my truck. I know for a fact that I use every last one of them though, not sure where it tops out.

I think I'm just going to take the slack out of the cable and see where I stand. I can't imagine the shoes are out of adjustment this soon in, makes more sense that the cable stretched. If my truck weren't so new I'd probably give the whole adjustment a go though. I'll post back later today after I do it with my results.

I definitely won't. My dealership has treated me pretty well so far. I'd try it myself but I live in an apartment and space is limited, plus I don't have a good jack or jack stands. If anyone in SLC reads this and wants to let me use their space and stuff let me know!

Great video above. just recently went to a boat ramp that was steeper than my usual one and found out I was not going to trust the truck to stay with just tranny lock. Never truly noticed before this. Just assumed normal wear and tear. Plus I don't want a You Tube video of my truck and boat in the water.

I've got my parking brake shoved all the way to the floor on my 2017 Tundra (with less than 6,000 miles). The parking brake will not hold the truck on my dad's driveway or a nearby boat launch. So, took it to the dealer to have it adjusted under warranty. The dealer refused to adjust it, because they said it's already within the Toyota manufacturer's specification. This is not safe!

It’s not hard to do. There is a hole in the rotor to turn the star bolt thing. Should be able to turn it with a narrow flat head screwdriver. But it is much easier to take the rotor off to get to it.

I had this issue with my truck when new. The dealer adjuster the parking brake under warranty when I only had a few thousand miles on the truck. It is the only warranty item I’ve had.

Guy’s, there’s no need to be messing with the star wheel on the drum brake trucks... that is meant for adjusting the brakes themselves.

My ‘17 with rear disc has an adjuster by the driver side catalytic converter - just under the driver side door. I would imagine the older trucks with drum brakes have the same adjuster. My 2005 & 2006 Tacoma’s with rear drum brakes had a similar adjuster that was under the center console.

Like the others are complaining - since new, my 2017 Off Road has had a weak parking brake and i’ve just lived with it. Now with 77k miles I decided to get under there & make an adjustment. I found the adjuster located on the drivers side by the catalytic converter, basically right below the driver seat along the frame rail.

The adjuster is a 12mm nut with a 12mm lock nut. The threaded portion of the cable was not rusted, but grimey enough that I had to hold the end of it with vise grips while making the first few turns on the adjuster, after that I could turn the adjuster by hand.
You can see how many turns I had to make to get the parking brake firm with about 6-8 clicks of the pedal.

Easy task, took a total of 10 minutes.

I am way late to this party but great thread. Very informative video. I'll be doing this to my 2014 Tundra next time I change the oil and rotate the tires. I bought the truck used in 2016 with 11k miles and have never been impressed with the parking brake. We recently bought a 2018 Sienna AWD for my wife and the parking brake holds the van fast even when put in drive and I and try to move. I was so impressed with its parking brake that it got me thinking about trying to figure out why my trucks brake isn't similar. Thanks for posting!

I see Toyota dealers still haven't been checking the parking brakes during dealer prep. First day of ownership had me under mine with two 12mm wrenches and anti seize compound.

Parking brake was set kind of weak on both my '18 and '21 Tundras. Been wondering about this.

On another note, I wish they'd use a parking brake setup like the 2nd gen manual transmission Tacomas. The straight pull back T-handle on the lower dash, I liked that setup a lot. I hate the toggle pedal for a parking brake; it's stupid and kind of dangerous. More than once I've bumped that pedal on the way in or out and unintentionally released it.

Just getting started.... Start X remote starter.

Hey Guys, thanks for this post.... I had some free play in the ebrake pedal on my 2015 and sure enough I could totally move this cable adjuster by hand it was so loose. 2 - 12mm wrenches and alot of luck it wasn't rusted up. Loosened jam nut a few licks of anti seize on the threaded assembly and just snugged it up. Beautiful now. I have a feeling when my brakes were done at the stealership 1 yr ago there was no attention paid to this adjuster and the amount of play in pedal. Anyhow, good to go. I really appreciate the help of these posts. Cheers

Can anyone clarify where we should be adjusting the parking brake cable? I see the adjuster nuts pictured above (post #23) that sit next to the driver side catalytic converter, but I also found the ones depicted in both the factory service manual (post #4) and the Haynes manual, located just above the foot pedal in the under-dash panel. Which set should I be adjusting?

In case some additional context helps, my truck's a 2016 regular cab, and the parking brake is so soft that at 9 clicks, it rolls on even a slight incline.
