I am looking to buy a 2016 double cab limited. It has 24K and looks to be in immaculate shape. 18 months left on Toyota drivetrain warranty

Anyone have any suggestions on common failure points that I should look very closely at? As far as I could tell, everything was fully function (4x4, ac, heat, seat motors, blind spot monitor etc) but I thought I would ask the experts here.

Service record is great, and the car came from Missouri. Almost zero rust underneath.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Came from Missouri and almost no rust underneath rarely live together in my experience?

Hmm, I would have though that they use less salt there than we do here in CO due to less snow. Maybe it has so little rust because it has so few miles.

Perhaps they didn’t drive it in the winter. Perhaps it didn’t really come from MO, but from AL, CA, South Africa, or Mars. Who knows?

5.7 L ? As far as I’ve read on here the one thing to look for is cam tower leaks .

It is the 5.7. Thank you, I will look into that. Sounds like it could be a pricey fix if it happens.

Well after September whenever it rains here they salt the crap out of everything,we get Ice pretty bad!

I have always felt that there is a lot less rust trouble in Colorado really?

At least on the Western Slope I don't think they salt much as there is way too much snow and it is too cold but on the Front Range in the cities I can imagine the salt can fly pretty good.

Assuming you are a paying a good amount and are not a mechanic, take it to Toyota and for around $125 they will give you a full report on the truck down to the millimeters left on the brake pads. Don't guess.. Know the truck is in good shape. Plus the will have the service record on file. You get that too.

If you do have specific concerns, tell them you want them to specifically address it in there written report.

My 16 Tundra and 14 4Runner both have some rust underneath after a Missouri winter. I usually clean it off and repaint after each winter. It's not terrible, but I'd be surprised to see no rust from a Missouri vehicle unless it wasn't driven when it snowed or they do like I have been doing and cleaning and repainting.

I think cam tower leak and AIP pumps are two of the biggest out of pocket expenses for these trucks. I've looked at a lot of used 5.7's when I get my truck serviced (I walk the lot while I wait) and it's surprising how many used 5.7s sitting on dealer lots have the cam tower weep or seepage. Nothing is dripping but you can definitely tell it's weeping.

100% this. I live in MO as well (near FLW) and rust, while a concern, shouldn't be anything like what you'd see up north.

    Welcome from NY.

As others have said, Cam Tower.

Is a Toyota dealership selling it? If not maybe take it to Toyota to have them go through it. The mileage is very low so hopefully everything is okay.
    Good luck.

Well trust me there is a whole lot of Missouri north of Leonard Wood and up here they salt the crap out of the roads all winter long.
It might be helpful to know where the truck actually did live?

If you have the VIN it is a simple matter to determine this and see where it was sold from and serviced if at a dealer.

I am not saying it is a rust bucket but it should not be too much work to get a better idea either.

Thank you. I am looking into the cam tower leak, it is a bit difficult to tell exactly where it comes from. The AIP seems like it would be hard to tell if there is an issue, until it actually fails.

There is about 18 months left on the Toyota drivetrain warranty, so hopefully that would cover either of those issues if it comes up in the near future. It also sounds like some people have gotten the cam tower leak covered outside of warranty. I wonder what percentage of trucks are affected.

Not a dealer, just a local broker. I am hoping to take to a mechanic to have checked out. We will see if I can find one that has any availability.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

Looks like the truck was purchased and serviced at Molle Toyota in Kansas City. I crawled around underneath quite a bit, and it looked good for a four year old truck. Better than a CO truck would.

The truck is at a place called Mile high car helper in Denver. I am going to call around to mechanics this morning and see if anyone can make time this afternoon.

    I appreciate the offer.

OH.I didn't realize that you have actually seen it already in person and my comments are ,mostly based on the idea of never trusting it unless someone you know has seen it already.

    Nevermind and Good Luck!

There are sure no lack of qualified shops in Denver.
