Base tune isn't really base tune its your factory tune with tons of code edits. So it should be way better than factory. It also edited the transmission shifting which from the factory is pretty bad. I had The Tacoma version when it was Test Beta like this one is and it was totally worth it. And it just got better over time With final releases.

It's frustrating for all of us but things had to pivot in response to the pandemic. We simply need to remain patient.

No... I don't think that's right. The base tune is still his own completely rewritten code. It's not just an adjusted factory tune.

I could be wrong, but you are the first person so say that.

It wouldn't make sense to give someone an adjusted stock tune, have them send logs for that, only to turn around and give them another tune with his own program.

Not to get into the minutiae too much, but it strikes me as "code edits" and "rewritten code", although maybe not "completely" rewritten, may be somewhat a splitting of hairs. Open to opinions, thoughts and perspectives on this.

Edit: The more I ponder this as coffee begins to saturate my grey matter, the more I think that this could be an extended off-topic discussion that would be inappropriate to have here as it would just antagonize those that come to this thread for the information it was originally intended and could go on for much too long. So, I move to let sleeping dogs lie.

Edited, in part due to my not wanting to get a mess of notifications to this thread for something that's not really that related.

I'd rather check my email for a tune. :)

I haven't seen this most recent one, I'm hoping that Mat will have the inclination to circle back through Zendesk to check my reply. Simple error, not too worried about it.

Semantics i guess. The machine assembly code the computer is written in is super complex. He didn't rewrite the whole flash, that would be idiotic as it controls endless parts of the truck. He did complex editing and writing the parts that affect the things like shift points, torque converter lock up and on and on and added huge rewritten chunks into expanding fuel and timing etc. Other tune places that do anything for these trucks don't get get into it as far as the OV Tune. I believe all flashed tuner tunes not piggyback are made using a TSB flash for each identified ECU as a starting point just like the dealer installs and reverse engineering rewriting some functions editing others etc. I'm sure some parts are refactored some are rewritten other parts are written from scratch. I am not a computer scientist or software engineer but I'm married to one and hire them for contract work for a job. I wouldn't expect her to be able to explain or sell or anything else like that. She is good at writing code and is insulated from customer service as a Sr Team director by several other levels in the industry. They do this or they would never get anything done explaining extremely complex coding and process to laypersons would be a huge waste of their time. I cant believe Matt actually talks to you guys with all the shit he gets given.

data logging logs are used for him to edit to more specific tables for your specific use mods, altitude, heat, fuel, weight, experience for your truck. This is the way to remotely collect data to custom tune. The best way is Dynotuning but then you'd need a competent tuner and Dyno to add to the equation and this is in the baby stages currently as they are releasing the new Tuner software that will act as a user interface front end into custom tunes.

Thanks for the insight, I can only imagine how much time it takes to do what Mat does.
While I know nothing about writing code I have run businesses for over 20 years so I’m honestly at a loss as to why Mat hasn’t hired anyone to field questions/emails. It would free up time for him to focus on his expertise.
Timely communication is essential to customer satisfaction and is just part of the cost of doing business.

Most tuning is done by alteration of table values, not completely rewriting ecu code. Things like direct shift, shift lock, etc are all custom code that mat has written.

Trade secrets maybe. More employees you hire to write codes, etc, the more your secrets exposed and potential for leakage. Once leaked, then, other tuners will be able to do what OV does and maybe more. It'll be bad for OV.

DAP tune is the same. Takes a while for them to send you your tune even though they have been around for maybe 3 years now if not more tuning Tundras. I used to have DAP. There's 1 main guy doing it. He does the in-person tune also. Also tune other vehicles.

@OVTune I tried out the new tow/haul mode tune on the freeway. As I went to pass a slower vehicle (~60mph or so) give it some throttle I noticed the truck didn’t down shift,... even at WOT, nothing happened. It’s like the gearlock in 6th on “S mode” but I was on D mode. Is this normal? I remembered on the stock and base tune it would automatically downshift.

This is the reply I got from him for the same question.

When you use the TOW button it sets it to gearlock mode which disables downshifting, so you should also put the truck in S so you can control the gears.

So if I’m reading the latest updates right. It looks like 19-20 tunes aren’t too far out? I’m currently driving a TRD blown Lexus and I don’t think I can live without a supercharger so my Tundra will be getting the Harrop blower. Just waiting for this pandemic stuff to go away so I can go get my Tundra.

This. I mean, yeah, to be honest, I totally understand and even agree with the frustration/exasperation of those who've been waiting a while, but by the same token, as a fellow IT guy, I'm amazed Mat posts here instead of having someone else front while he does the back-end stuff. (Though I'm sure there are reasons.)

The only thing I can compare this to (and this is a bad comparison, but as a non-programmer IT guy, it's all I got) was the time I had to rebuild the boot sector of a hard drive that belonged to a tactical IT system when I was on the USS Enterprise. We *COULD NOT* lose the data, and so I did some research to see if it could be done. At the time there wasn't that much online, but I did find some sources saying it'd been done in the past.

Somehow, myself and another guy were able to successfully rewrite the boot sector of the bad drive to get the drive up long enough to recover the data. It took both of us working in shifts about 5 days straight.

With this said, to the OP - I HIGHLY suggest a Synology/QNAP NAS if you don't have one. They've been a godsend for me.

That's the way my tune works. I don't drive much in "D" anymore, I taken to using s-mode almost all the time. But the tow-haul gear-lock works in either mode. I make sure ahead of time, if I think I'll need a quick acceleration to pass, say on a regular two-lane highway, I either turn off the tow-haul, or be ready to manually shift it down, usually to 4th gear if I'm at 60 or below.

The problem with hiring someone to do this type of work is that right after I train them, show them how to write this code that nobody knows how to write, they can walk away with it and compete against me.
I actually had this happen in the Mazda tuning world back in the day. Helped someone learn some things, turned it into a business and not only competed against me, trashed talked me, and verbatim copied text off my website.
