I've been looking for a cap/shell for my 2016 crewmax shortbed on the used market and found one that might work 4 hours away for $150. It was an ARE for a 2013 what looks like double cab, from the picture of the serial number. Seller says it measures 67x70" long... Will this fit my truck? It sure seems to be close by measurements. It's even silver like my truck. I'll have to replace a window but if I can make it work I want to. Here's the serial number if anyone can help me decode it. Thanks in advance!

Double cab has 6.5’ bed. Your crew max is 5.5’. Unless you wanted it hanging over by a foot, it won’t fit. Sorry chief. That’s a killer deal - $150 - assuming it’s in good shape.
Where is that at? I have a silver double cab & want a cap.

Nevermind. 2013 - that cap is for a 2nd gen Tundra. We have 3rd gens.

I was going off measurements, and it looked like it measured almost the same as what my tonneau does. Bed length on the shortbed crewmax is 67.2, correct? A 70" cap definitely wouldn't overhang by a foot. I understand the 2013 is a different generation but if the beds are close enough in size to work I'll rig a $150 cap.

Here's the cap, it's not perfect but at that price I don't expect it. I can do paint touchups and fix a window.

What I have learned from going down this rabbit hole recently is about the Long Bed for starters but I imagine that the same differeces apply to each bed length between the generations too?

The 2nd Gen are exactly 1-1/2" shorter than the 3rd gen beds.
That difference is in the thickness of the tailgate alone, otherwise the body of the bed and curve of it are the same.
So this means that a 2nd gen shell sitting on a 3rd gen bed will be 1-1/2" short at the cab end.

The tailgate of the 3rd gen is for some unknown reason twice as thick as that on a 2nd gen.

I know this because I stood there with the guy selling this 2nd gen and we measured everything 4 times before sliding the 2nd gen shell right onto my 3rd gen truck!
The fit was perfect except for the 1-1/2" at the cab as I said.
I was just going to get a 2"x2" aluminum L peice and cut it to bridge that gap.
Simple solution as long as the bed length are the same.

Hope this helps down the road.

No problem,I paid $100 for the red one and about $20 for the aluminum L channel to make it fit and my plan was to paint it with black bedliner,at least before I fell into this commercial shell and bought it too!?

This one is for a Ford F150 with a Long Bed and is about perfect too or at least as a work truck it is perfect!

The ARE Fiberglass have a contoured fit on the rails that is nice though this one will work better for me in the end.
A friend is going to try the Red one on his F150 and the circle of life goes on!

    Good Luck

For what it’s worth, I measured my leer xq on my 18 CM. It’s approximately 70” on the inside. Exterior length is more like 72”.

I called ARE today and they seem pretty convinced it won't work. My $150 truck cap dreams are crushed, but I'm happy to put anyone onto it that's near enough to Alabama to go make it yours.

Just to be clear how could it possibly work?'You have a Crewmax with one Bed Length but that shell was for a DC with an entire other bed length.

If they were both for Crew Max beds but one was gen2 and the other gen3 then I think you would have very little trouble making it work but different bed sizes is out of the question for the most part.

I talked to the guy at ARE and he confirmed it's for the shortbed the same length, the trouble lies in the curvature of the cab... But thanks

The topper tag clearly shows it's for a 2013 Toyota Tundra "DC". My A.R.E. has the sane "DC" on that tag...but that topper sure looks short for a DC
