What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Haven't had a lot of time today but a few things were accomplished.

• Got driverside header temp installed (2) bolts holding it on awaiting new lock nuts
• Attached driver-side cat (hand tight)
• o2 hand tight
• Removed Passenger-side cat entirely for new o2 bung (should get here tomorrow)
• Removed 3 out of 4 passenger-side heat shield bolts. (had to take a shower to hit my hair cut appoint which was 2.5 months overdue!

About to go back out and start removing the pass. header and maybe the rest of the exhaust since I have the BAMuffler waiting to install.

I installed my JBA shorties in 2003, the picture was taken about a year ago.
A valve cover gasket was leaking a little oil at the time.

 

Are those the ceramic coated? The titanium coating is about $150 extra. Suppose to keep the heat down a bit. Sounds like it’d be worth it since lack of the heat shields not fitting from OEM designed oldies.

 

Ceramic... Titanium wasn't available in '03.

 

I thought the ceramic would have stayed shiney longer. Do you live where they put lots of stuff on the road during the winter? It bearly rains here, let alone snow in the winter. They only spray a small amount of something on the bridges to keep from freezing overnight

 

They look good for their age. Better looking than @Darkness Cali weathered ones. Must be that Malibu air salt aire.

 

Update! I didn't get to start when I wanted as the wife wanted to mow and water her plants but I eventually got out right before 5:30pm.

So for me, the passenger side ended up being harder. I think this is for a few reasons.

• The passenger side had definitely been messed with (different heat shield bolts that were tiny and couldn't see since the shield and bolts were so rusted).
• The nuts on the headers weren't the locking style which came off a lot easier. Studs were definitely newer and all but 1 stayed in place (the nut easily backed off though)
• I turned the wheels when I was on the driver side and should have straightened it out to start the passenger side.
• I left the (2) hardest bolts for last. The bottom/back one was fairly easy once I went from underneath the truck. The last bolt though was a nightmare. (this goes back to the tires not being straight and I couldn't access these without having to turn the wheels)
• I removed the cat before starting - This helped access some but allowed the header to start dropping off making that last bolt the nightmare on top of it already being a pain!!!

Mostly mistakes on my part when I should have copied exactly how I did the driver side.

Overall, it took (2) hrs to remove the header and temp install the new one. The timing was close to the driver side once I included the temp install on that side but I def feel it was tougher on me and surely being up since 2 am doesn't help. I'm exhausted and ended up with a lot more cuts/scrapes.

I feel this is will be about 5 hrs once I tighten everything up and re-install the cat (this wasn't necessary on the driver side as I need to weld the bung for the o2 otherwise this would have been left in place). Not bad for laying in the dirt using hand tools and keeping the wheels on. I definitely think without the wheels on a lift could easily be 4hrs or less.

We finally got them on after all this time IMDEMENTED !

 

Very little salt is used here in my area, plenty of rain though.

Over 16 years & 150,000 miles of use.

 

I'll be honest, considering mine have been on since 2009 I felt ashamed seeing how much cleaner his looked. Now that I know his are coated and mine are raw I don't feel bad.

 

Dang, headers with a supercharger. That truck's gonna have balls. Now all you need are some dirty deeds injectors.

 

2 things to add.

One: Was out driving today, and heard a metal on metal clunk. I naturally thought WTF? My truck normally makes very little noise, therefore I pay extra attention to "abnormal" noises. Drove for a little bit, and heard it again. Then I remembered I had two empty "Yeti-like" tumblers in the back seat. Separated them from each other. No more noise. All good there.

Two: Today while I was out in town nature called... so I pulled into the local Marathon gas station. They had an attendant outside turning people away if they didn't have a mask. Went back to the truck. Dug around, and thought "Fuck me, I don't have a mask."

I dug around in my day bag, and found a tank top. Wrapped that around my face kinda half-ass, and went inside.

Sat down, did my business, and then reached into the TP dispenser. No TP. I thought to myself, "Well fuck me. Just a series of unfortunate events this last hour. Jeez."

Pulled my pants up, and kinda cracked the stall door looking for paper towels. No dice. Hand dryer instead of paper towels in the loo. I thought "Well shit..."

I carefully walked around the gas station, and found a 10 pack of baby wipes for $6. I also found one roll of paper towels for $1.39. No TP. I thought "Well I can make the paper towels work."

Carefully walked to the counter, and set the paper towels down. I said to the cashier "You guys are out of TP in the men's bathroom."

He looked down at the paper towels, and then back up at me wearing my new hat (pic attached), looked down at the paper towels, and then back up at me. He kinda huffed like I had given him a monumental task such as chewing Mount Rushmore down to nothing using only his teeth.



Hopefully you fellas get a laugh at my expense. I know I thought it was funny even though I was in a bad mood.

That was a Pre-gas station picture I sent to mom and pop while explaining the story.

There has been a few locals that were "arrested" by the local PD for public endangerment due to no masks. All stories have been swept under the rug, but I wasn't trying to go to jail today.

 

i meant I would have used that “mask” in the stall, and ran out of there!

 

It took me 3 radiators being sent to the house, damaged, and sent back before I finally ordered one through O'Reilly's, or Autozone.

I elected for "in store pickup" because the shipping people for both companies are a little gentler on items going to stores.

The first one was immaculate except the overflow nipple was broken off.
Sent back for a full refund.

The second one was also immaculate except a forklift had pierced the coils with its forks. Sent back for a full refund.

The third one had a broken top "housing" (the plastic pieces on top, and bottom.)
Sent back for a full refund.

Finally had one sent to one or the other. I paid a little extra to get one through them, but I finally had one "un-fuckered." I asked the guy before I paid if I could inspect it. He asked "why?" I explained the situation. He said "Oh no shit! Go for it man. You sound... frustrated."

Is that a Denso unit? I ordered a Denso radiator and they package it so poorly it arrived the same way. I honestly couldn't even blame the delivery driver. They didn't have anything in the box to protect the radiator.

 

That is how all 3 of mine were upon arrival.
Just a box, with styro-foam on the top/bottom, but nothing in the middle protecting the coils.

Yeah, shame on Denso honestly. I sent mine back and bought one locally from O Reillys. It has a lifetime warranty at least.

honestly damage like that is common on any radiator. unless you buy OEM. but ive even had that issue with OEM

 

Late reply, but I'm gonna have to blame the air injection BS that was on my 05 for why this was very much not the case for me.

Glad all worked out. Ordered OEM denso to the store. Not a scratch on it, and I actually damaged it more installing it than they did shipping it. LOL

I usually check also, but in this instance it was drop trow immediately or suffer the consequences.
