I also have Xfinity 200Mbps service and I went with a Netgear CM500 modem and a Netgear R7800 router. DOCSIS 3.1 is not needed for a 200Mbps service. I was able to purchase both for around $140. The modem from staples with a coupon and the router from ebay.

hows the distance on this one? Any issues at all? My house is long so ive always had wifi issues.

any reason why you went with 2 units instead of all in one?

whats a mesh network? Is that just another provider.

2 units is just what works for me. Also try placing your router in the center of your house and as high as possible.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
I just got the Google Nest Router and love it. It gives a solid connection up to 2200 square feet and has a nice, non-intrusive design. It gets good reviews and you can add points if need be. Two thumbs up!

If you think you may go to a faster internet service, plan for that also. It all depends on how much money you want to spend. Latest netgear router is $500. During this covid junk my fam has been home, 4 iPhones, 4 laptops, 2 roku TVs, and Netflix no issues.

Thats the thing i dont want to spend a hole lot as units get outdated after a couple years. I have 2 iphones 2 chrome books 2 ipads 1 laptop and 2 tvs and the chrome books for my kids school always acts up for video calls for school. So i go around shutting wifi off of units not used

Mesh networks are systems used where you might not get decent WiFi coverage from a single WiFi Access Point in your location. Many places are too big and spread out or constructed from materials that make WiFi performance an issue and so you need to distribute multiple APs throughout the property.

Now hat many use WiFI calling to get good cell coverage and are working from home with portable computers and Screaming media all day long it is more important than ever to make sure that we have strong, reliable and seamless WiFi so that our Kids and Partners do not Bitch and drive us more insane than usual in these crazy times!

In early days of WiFi you could merely use multiple APs but you had issues when moving around the location when the computer needed to jump between using the different APs to get decent signal all the time.
Now that all locations have fixed computers,AV Screaming devices and phones roaming all over the place there are these Mesh Network Systems that allow for a seamless movement and distribution of WiFi through a place that will have problems without one.

    Essentially!

The older Mesh systems used the WiFi radio bandwidth to do the "Meshing" and thus reduced network performance noticeably as the network would grow and this caused big slowdowns in use but the newer systems have separate radios inside just to do the Meshing" function and the WiFi is handled by a different radio in there and so performance is not really hampered by the latest mesh systems no matter how many units you might need to do the job.

There are systems that require almost no setup inout from a user but these also allow for almost no setup from the user.
Then there are systems that are better administered by IT guys and allow for full customizing or tweaking that way.

I use Ubiquiti Networking gear mostly and they offer both types of system but even the cheap and simple to install versions of thiers allow for decent tweaking though they do not usually require any either.

Amplifi is the line Ubiquiti Homeowner Stuff and I would look at that line and do for most smaller and mid size home installs and once up and running they are fast and bulletproof too.

As for the Modem,no one ever got fired for buying Motorola but Netgear or Asus are decent in my experience as well and many Cable companies will just give you a modem with the service and leave the WiFi and Networking part to you,if you need anything bigger than a combined unit can provide then you usually will be better off getting separate units to build the system.

Get yourself a Motorola SB6141 for $99. It will pay for itself in less than a year.

Depending on the square footage of your home you could go one of two different ways. You could get a conventional router or a mesh router. For a conventional router, I would go with TP-Link A7. If your budget allows and you can justify the extra coverage because you have a 2 floor home, I would look at mesh routers. EERO and Netgear Orbi are, in my opinion, the best way to go for speed and support. The love my EERO setup. Excellent coverage and a very stable connection.

Either way, get yourself a dedicated modem and then go with a dedicated router system. For the $14 bucks a month you are currently paying, you can get a much more robust system that will pay for itself in less than 24 months.

Some of solutions are great however i noticed the meshed system doesnt give me a lot of options for hardwired. I remolded my house 7 years ago and ran Cat5e to every room. As the mesh would be great for the ipads and chrome books. But not so for the media boxes or PC with no wifi.

You may be under estimating the strength of the signal these mesh routers provide. PlayStations, Apple TV, Amazon fire stick, IOT devices and more run no problem simultaneously at my house.

You could always get a small Netgear 5 port switch to use at your main entertainment system to take the load of the WiFi used in the rest of the house.

I was thinking of that running a POE smart switch just for those that run to my current modem/router and ease up on the wifi

There is certainly Wired Mesh too and all of the Amplifi and Ubiquiti gear works both ways or in a mixed environment too.

    Amplifi Router/AP start at $99

I have a few hardwired mesh systems installed in stone houses in Florida with an AP in every room and maybe 15 or so in one house.

I installed one a few weeks ago for a guy with 5 kids at home and he and his wife as well and they are usually running 35 or so users at a time on the WiFi with no real issues and that is with at least 2 of the Kids Screaming Roku around the clock!
One nice feature of the Ubiquiti systems is that I can monitor and track the usage all the time from anywhere and I can fix and regulate things as needed after getting a phone call from the client if I need to. Not saying everyone needs these capabilities but they can sure be handy when I do.

All of the options shared depends on your needs base on the area as well as the number of devices who will be using. I was also in the same situation wherein getting those cheap routers and wifi but ended not good. If you want to spend and be happy of the speed you are paying get the latest router or wifi options if you can. Get a modem router with a DOCSIS 3.1 classification. It will give you the speed what you’ve paid for.

    0FEEA882-97F1-48FB-B802-5C9FEFCB3EE3.jpg

I never regret i got. I paid 200 mbsp for my subscription and its stunning speed paved like a butter.

I was also looking at that combo, but unless you are paying for gigabit speeds it’s a waste of money. When shopping for modems look at the download and upload channels.

    Motorola SB6141 8x4 modem
    Netgear CM500 16x4 modem
    Netgear C7800 32x8 modem/router

I get 200 Download and 12 upload any time of the day with a CM500 modem and netgear x4s.

I just ordered a Netgear CM500 for the modem on ebay. Im looking at the Unifi AP Pro setup and run a POE switch for all my hard wired applications.

You may want to get it from a Netgear authorized retailer for warranty support. Like most electronics on eBay, the manufacturer may not support the product because it was not purchased from an authorized retailer. If you decide to go a different route, get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem to future-proof your setup

It was $25 bucks shipped with taxes. If it dies on me its ok it would be 2 months with xfinity.

You can add a switch to any of the mesh hub for your cat5/6 needs.

I went with the Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 and a Netgear modem after having repeated signal loss and outages. It made a huge difference. I was using a repeater to get signal in the office before I upgraded. With the new router I was also able to get all of the speed that I was paying for. Run a speed test before/after you upgrade you will be surprised. Comcast will sell you a "speed upgrade" that their equipment can't handle. Also having your own equipment gets rid of the monthly rental fee for the crap they use.
