    I have a 2016 Tundra.
Considering to install a kill switch in either the ignition or fuel circuit and looking for advice.

Previously In my old 2001 tundra, I located the fuel pump ground wire that was in a loom near the side of the driver seat, cut it and installed a switch in line. It did exactally what I wanted it to, when ever I parked the car, I hit the switch disrupting the ground connection to the fuel pump. meaning if you tried to start the truck, it would just crank but not fire up because it wasnt getting fuel.

Now I want to do the same on the 2016 but not sure where to look for the fuel pump wire loom to find the ground wire. Does anyone know where and what color coding this wire would have?
I am not too familar with the 2016 wiring diagrams or its sensors or computers,
Do you think if I went to start it with the switch disabled and it cranked and cranked that it would throw a fuel supply code???

is it a better idea to install in the ignition circuit so it doesnt crank at all if the switch is disabled? if so, where and what color are those wires?

    thank you

I'm using a oem switch via a relay connecting a starter wire located in the steering column. It is zero crank unless activating the oem switch at the same time the key is turned on.. Sorry I don't remember the color of the wire, it's been almost 5 years.

fuel. imo better to hear the bad guy cranking the truck than no sound at all. in case you close by.

there is a cool write up on YT

If you have a chip key they can't start the truck without it anyway. I know because I cut a key and tried and it will just keep cranking unless you program the chip but if it makes you sleep better at night go for it.

thanks for the replies, but keep them coming.

Yes I agree , I want to install the switch in the fuel pump (negative wire) like my last tundra, Yes i want to hear cranking and cranking if someone tries to start. I think anyone who is letting it crank for more than 30 seconds will get the message, and decide to leave before he gets caught. If you do it the other way (power to the ignition) and there is no noise when the key is turned, they can be in your vehicle all night trying to find your secret switch or your spliced wire.

Yes I have the chip key , and that technology may thwart off the inexperienced car theif who likes to hot wire a car, but there is something called a black box that experienced car theifs can use.
I read They can be out in front of your house, up to 300 feet away from your key fob , and the box sends a signal to get your key fob to respond with its code that is sitting on your kitchen counter,
I dont know all the details on how it works , but youre not as safe as you think you are with the chip key.

If anyone knows what color and where the wires are located (inside the cab) for the fuel pump please chime in

put the chip key in a Faraday cage type sleeve. That will block all signals.

You're thinking of the new fobs that have no key and require you to be in the car for it to start. Our chip keys are basically like NFC chips and don't work from any kind of distance since they are not powered by the battery in the fob. You can be in your car with a working programed key and try to start it with a non programed key and it won't start because the chip needs to be basically touching the ignition. This is why I like having a vehicle with a key, new cars without keys are vulnerable to the method you're referring to, so for us that is 2020 and up Tundras.

The fobs basically dont even work if they're not in the vehicle or within a foot or two of the doors.....I'd like to see someone skim my code from 300 feet away....my pickup with the buttons on the fob doesnt hardly work at more than maybe 20-30ft away let alone the NFC function.

My opinion if I were to put a switch in, I'd probably do a hidden battery cutoff switch somewhere. Throw the switch and all power is disconnected like someone stole your battery.

    thanks ,
ya , not too famailar with the fobs or key chips , just something I read about these black box scanners.

quote : "My opinion if I were to put a switch in, I'd probably do a hidden battery cutoff switch somewhere. Throw the switch and all power is disconnected like someone stole your battery."

to me this is extremely overkill , and very easy to spot. I have had those Moroso battery switches on a few race cars in the past,
it would be pretty noticable when you have 25lbs of 1GA welding cable going to your hidden huge 4" 3lbs metal incased switch and back again to the battery ,
but most important if you actually cut off all the battery power , your key fob wouldnt work to open the car , and your alarm would be disconnected as well , so probably not a good idea

    but thanks for the bump

The most ingenious setup I ever seen while working at the dealer required you to pull up on the window switch for the driver rear from the front door while cranking.

    Without it, no crank

I believe that on the gen 3 tundra, it will not crank if a brake light is out. It should be pretty easy to interrupt the line to the lights with a switch

Yeah, I think that’s right and I’m mistaken about cranking. Either way, it seems like a good way to delay or stop the thief.

Easy fix, go to the parts store and ask for a 1969 Chevrolet headlight dimmer switch they are usually about 15 dollars. Mount it in the drivers floor and wire it to either the fuel pump wire or the ignition and when you get in just step on it to turn it on or off.

Not sure what Toyota was thinking. I think there is a bypass button somewhere near the shifter or you have to remove the cover to access it but I learned that here and I still don't know exactly where it is.
Imagine you are in the middle of nowhere or shopping and a brake light goes out ...
Is this a common practice or just Toyota or Tundra?

    Edit:
Looks like shifter locks if the Stop fuse is blown and not if the Stop light is out. Refer to @Joe333x post below.

Hopefully this helps. I believe it runs down the drivers door and connects to fuse 18

    thanks any info helps ,
but anything going to the fuse box would be a positive wire.
easier and much safer to find and use the ground wire

maybe ill go under the truck and see what color wires go to the fuel pump , then might bet lucky finding them in the cabin

Is this true? If your brake light is out you're stranded? That can't really be true, I guess you could probably use the shift lock override but still that's ridiculous if true.

Edit: Did some research on this because I knew there could be no way that a bulb goes out and you can't shift. What you guys were thinking of is if the STOP fuse is blown then you will have no brake lights but also since the fuse is blown the truck doesn't know you're hitting the brake pedal to shift. Found the info here https://www.tundratalk.net/threads/help-transmission-stuck-in-park.472658/.

I'll be installing a fuel pump kill switch on my 2021 Tundra SR5 and take pictures along with explanation of what I did. As long as it doesn't snow this weekend!

In addition to the Fuel Pump kill-switch, I'm also installing a secondary kill-switch that will keep my floor shift locked until I toggle it on. See this post for details (https://www.tundras.com/threads/wiring-help.79110/#post-2060402). I pity the thief that RF scans my key fob only to find out the engine won't start, but even if they found that kill-switch they couldn't shift it out of park! lol.. by that time, I'd have my 10mm so far up his nose it'd be too late.
