To Tundra or not to Tundra

Hi I currently drive a 06 Tacoma that. But... I'm getting a serious push from the wife (I know right) to get a Tundra. I'm still about 50/50. The main reason would be for towing our camper (about 4000# loaded) Taco does a fairly good job but grunts a little on the hills. Sounds like the towing mileage would be a wash. Starting to take a serious look at Tundras. Is there anything I should be watching for? Any options needed or not needed? Sounds like this COVID thing is going to drag on for awhile. I work in a hospital and my income is fairly secure. Thanks for your input.

 

Get one! 5.7L you'll like the extra power and space. Gas mileage sucks though

 

You posted this question on “the” Tundra forum. So the majority of answers will be an absolute yes.

Go test drive one. Take it home for a few hours or overnight if dealer allows that where you live and hook up your trailer and drive it around.

You will need to decide what cab/ door or bed configuration you want also. Then once that is done you can research trim levels and then we will all help you mod it out.

 

Sold my 2015 Tacoma TRD sport in early March and just picked up a 2018 TRD Off Road Tundra for the same reason you’re looking: Camper choice was limited to puddle jumpers for the most part and I couldnt haul my Kubota. ‘No regerts’.

 

One thing I will note coming from a Tacoma to a Tundra I was disappointed that the TRD off-road package doesn't come with any extra goodies (e locker for example) like it does on the Tacos.. Just shocks an a sticker more or less.. Other then missing a manual transmission at times, I have no regrets with the change..

 

Yea the TRD off Road and TRD PRO packages are a joke compared to other Toyota models. Everything that comes on a PRO can be added aftermarket for a lot less money and you can get a lot of better product.

 

Not sure what kind of mileage you get on your taco, When I got my Tundra I looked into the Tacos and the milage difference didn't seem to be that much better on the Taco. I think it was rated for 18 highway? My tundra is rated for 17 highway. It wasn't worth it for me to get a smaller truck with less power to save an MPG or 2. I don't regret it at all but I will say don't expect to get much more than 15 to 16 MGP overall in a tundra.

Actually already did this. Last year the dealer lent me a platinum edition for Memorial Day weekend and planted the seed. Pulled effortlessly and flat

Agree about the mileage. The extra payload would be nice as well. I load the Taco to its GVWR about 3-4 a year. I drive the wife’s car when I want mileage 22miles one way to work and it gets 40MPG.

The Tundra is cavernous compared to the Taco! I was actually thinking about “downsizing” to a Taco until I sat down in one!
Then drove it around the block and quickly changed my mind..Although a Manual tranny is attractive!

 

My Tacoma had higher payload than my Tundra.

 

Do it !!!
