    Years ago I met a fellow that experimented building all sorts of things with some machine shop tools he had in his garage. Larry knocked this out on his lathe.
    Built out of hardwood, he gave it to me. Larry's gone now but this special tool he made for me helps keep him memory alive.

    My brother recently bought a batch of fishing tackle from a family estate sale. Too much product for him to use, he posted items for sale on Ebay ~ made a bunch of money as the items were new and in the box ~ much of which is older and no longer available. It's a beautiful thing ~ the family got some money out of the tackle and the end users were tickled having it.

    Although this isn't a tool in the traditional sense, our letter opener is another item Larry crafted for us. The blade is made of stainless steel and the handle is made of inlaid bone and wood.
    Larry went through a knife phase and this was something special we asked him to make . . . something he was paid to create. Again, I can't handle our letter opener without thinking of my compadre, Larry.

    Probably my Grandfather’s cast iron Stanley Defiance 1299 utility knife. They were made from 1938 until 1953, but I think they switched to cast aluminum toward the end. I keep it in regular rotation in my tool chest.

    Handed down to me from my dad;
    • 50 year old hobby shop air compressor
    • Vintage Stanley 30" wrecking bar #130
    • Vintage Stanley Wonder Bar
    Handed down to me from my compadre;
    • Harbor Freight 3 Ton floor jack
    My compadre used and abused the floor jack to lift tree stumps out of the ground which racked the frame really badly.
    I tried to straighten it as best I could but still only three wheels are on the ground when rolling across the garage floor.

    All these tools have a history to them that comes to mind each time I use them.

    Man, I can't stand those fat tapes as they don't fit good in any of my bags.

    Tried. But with my bags, my tape is in a pocket below my speed square and above a big pouch. I pull my tape with my left hand and the marker with my right, so it's on that side. Left side is also where I carry extra sticks of nails/fasteners/etc.
    Right bag has the razor knife, pencil/marker, and any hand tools I need.
    Between them, on my back right is a hanger for the hammer.

    So that only leaves 1 place for it, back left. It'd be ackwards to have to reach back there and up to get it. And sometimes if I'm taking a drill and an impact, the drill clips on my belt back there and the smaller impact in the right bag/belt.

    So out of places. I tried one of those fat ones, a dewalt that went out a lot further before it broke, but just didn't fit into my setup. I must be overtrained or something, but that's what works for me. If I'm doing electrical/plumbing/hvac/tile where I'm using one of those old style tie around canvas type aprons, I use a clip on tape holder and I tried it in there, but being short and fat, it sat too low for me to easily pull out of there.

    It does work if I clip it onto my front pants pocket tho. But then I'm usually not working, just going to the store or something.

    So I tired, but tall and skinny work best for me:

    Gonna have to agree with this. It's the basis of everything. Without a proper measurement, everything is fucked. Stanley FatMax are the only tapes I'll ever buy. Nothing else lasts in my trade.

    My plasma table is probably my most favorite. The amount of time and effort saved, plus a superior end result makes it a game changer and really stepped up my game more than any other tool. This was when I first got it, since then I've expanded it and added a water bed. If anyone is curious, it's called a Langmuir and holds a hand torch and the base 2ftx2ft table costs $1500.
