I'd say the ones that have to deal with the tens of thousands of assholes that show up to the events, are rude, messy, get drunk, and insult them when they are doing the menial work that makes the venues function. Especially the poor bastards that clean the toilets.

Then how would schools and libraries be able to afford janitors? How would bars be able to afford security and bartenders? It is a nice thought but doesn't translate to reality. Lots of people can tend a bar or clean a toilet. Not saying any of it is fair - but that's life. As I tell my kids, fair is something that comes for a week in the spring time (except not this year).

Oh, believe me, I wasn't implying things should be fair or that it should be taken from them or anything. It's just the way society views/treats it all. I think it's a subconscious thing for the masses; we all wish we could be independently wealthy for as little effort as possible, so we assign more value to those that have managed to pull it off. A high paying job that doesn't feel like work has more value to us as a society, so we idolize it. We are losing a sense of value in hard work.

Take the job I'm in now versus the position I left to get here, and it's staggering. I worked up from being a warehouse worker to "delivery driver" (drove big trucks to places they should never be with bunches of cellular equipment and the like) and I busted my back in those positions. Lots of heavy lifting, and go go go crap in the warehouse and I did it for 5 years before I pushed to become a driver. Moving to the driver position yielded a pay bump of about 21% to start and I did it for 3 years to wind up with a total pay bump of about 50%. Driving was still heavy lifting to start and end a day, but not 8 hours of it like the warehouse. Still, both positions are hard work on a mental and physical level. Got tired of working in that department because the director is a narcissistic, micromanaging Veteran hater, so I moved to a technician position with lots of hours and mental work, but zero physical labor. Started with a little under 25% pay raise and In just under a year it's been a pay increase of approximately 50% from what I was making after 3 years as a driver. My job is far easier and I am making way more money, and have a better schedule. Paid more for less, but I'm not complaining. I am just showing a bit of the window I see the world through.

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion, but installing nerf bars on a tundra instead of sliders is like hiring an architect over a licensed civil engineer to design a building.

Congrats on your progression. I just want to offer another perspective..

I'm not sure exactly what your current position entails, but I am positive that not everyone could do it. You say it's easier, and I believe you that it's easier for you. It may not be easier for everyone, and that's why YOU have this job and not everyone else. While your old jobs working in the warehouse and then driving a truck were more physically demanding, they probably took less decision-making, troubleshooting, and organizational skill than your current position. Different people have varying strengths and weaknesses. Some people are great at analyzing, troubleshooting, organizing, and using a process to solve problems, but should NEVER get behind the wheel of heavy equipment or operate power tools. Others are great at the mechanical side of things, spacial awareness, understanding how to use and operate dangerous equipment or loads almost naturally, but wouldn't be the best choice to lead a team, or make decisions for an organization that would impact a work group. Some people are blessed and are good at everything.

I have, over the past 6 years, experienced an almost 100% increase in salary. Similar to your story, I started off as a field service engineer and did a lot of physical work. I've moved into a position that requires far less physical labor but a lot more thought and planning.. It's easier from a physical perspective, but it's much harder having so many different people rely on my to do their jobs appropriately. Sometimes I wish I was still in the field with one customer at a time to keep happy, but then my direct deposit comes in and I remember that I want my kids to be able to pay for college.

    Function before sparkle.
Same here - 6 year old and my wife hates climbing into tall trucks. Step was necessary.

But I could use a slider. The Tundra is really long and I know I will rip off the boards one day.

No, but the opportunity to make billions of dollars has caused incredible advances in standards of living for people around the globe. I get that it’s super trendy to hate on capitalism, especially on social media, but that drive to make as much money as possible forces an altruism on the capitalist that benefits society in a way that forced redistribution never could.

I always kind of shake my head when people say things like, “there should be no billionaires,” while ordering an $8 sandwich that is LIGHT YEARS beyond the best food the King of England ate just a handful of generations ago, or while answering a FaceTime call on their iPhone, or while getting their Prime packages off the front porch.

To tie this back into the thread title:

    UNPOPULAR OPINIONS:
    • if everyone wants to make Michael Jordan a bajillionaire because they like watching him play basketball, he is the only one who has a right to that money. He earned it through no coercive means.
    • (this one is really just a fact) there is not a set amount of money in the world. Innovations through capitalistic endeavors continually generate more

Must’ve been someone else. My post wasn’t completely directed at you; I used your post to hop onto a soapbox, which is kinda what this thread is about, even if it got away from tundra-specific opinions a long ways back.

My unpopular opinions, gonna try to keep them vehicle related:

    1. Most wheels bigger than 18” look ridiculous

    2. Putting a 6” lift on a pickup with tires smaller than 35’s just looks dumb

    3. 80% of the people I know buy diesels for the status of having a 60k dollar pickup

    4. Range/Land Rovers belong in Europe, not in America

    5. It’s just sad that Prince Harry sold his custom hunting rifles to appease his wife (not vehicle related, damn...)

Maybe if we (we in a general sense, I don't waste my money on sporting events to watch someone play a game) didn't have to pay asinine rates for tickets or beer at an event those billions wouldn't be generated to over pay people who play a game.

Too true. Even amateur sports are ridiculous. It used to cost $20-30 to go see the local junior hockey team. Then the billionaire owner tripled the prices after we the taxpayers paid to build him a new arena.

My post was more of a wander through a thought process than an actual take on the state of the world. I fully understand the points you are making, and I agree. The whole thing is complex and multilayered because there is no black and white to society as a whole. It's all full of varying shades of grey.

One thing the British have correct; the spelling of the color grey. It just looks better than "gray" the way we do it here in the colonies.
