Owned two Tacomas before my first Tundra. Am now on my 3rd Tundra.

    Pros:
    Towing
    Power
    Room
    Comfort
    Safety

    Cons:
Size - you get used to it very quick. Rear camera and parking sensors make it easy. If doing a ton of off-road in tight quarters, can see where it would be a problem.

MPG - I’m on 33’s, and average around 15 depending on how much highway I’m doing vs city. My lifted Tacoma on 33’s did maybe one mpg better. Stock was 2 mpg better combined. Same mpg towing.

Sorry for the hijack, but what is this? I've never heard of a rule like this one. Is there a reason? After growing up a military brat and serving in the army myself, I would have major anxiety about not being able to back into a spot. :notsure:

After owning Tacoma since 2016, I'm now planning my upgrade to Tundra. May not happen in near future but I'm planning.
I did the lift, the tire upgrade, the damn ReGear which was 100% worth it but don't ask me how much I paid! :(. At then end, I don't have the interior room which at the beginning I didn't think it would be big deal for me, the engine power, and my MPG on my Tacoma is about the same as Tundra because of the lift and tire size increase and the regear I got to get that factory pep back and the lousy transmission shift which has gotten better with the Flash update I got at the dealership. So.... here I am! :hattip:

Sounds like you have a half way decent truck that is serving you well and that you have put some money into. If you don't need a Tundra then just keep saving your money. Maybe the 2022 Tundra will be all that and then you will be in a better financial position to get one with a lower payment. Or maybe the 2022 Tacoma will be worth it? Or maybe all Toyotas will suck in 2022 and the new Ford Ranger will be the one? Who knows, either way you have a good truck now and can keep saving for something new later on.

I went from a 16 Tacoma to a 2020 tundra. I miss the storage under/behind the rear seats in the Tacoma, and the storage in the bed with the power outlet. Most of all I miss the dash of the Tacoma..I wish I could have the Tacoma dash in the Tundra. Otherwise I love the Tundra. The Tundra dash is pretty bleh and the layout of it is not well thought out. I don't regret my decision though. Love the room and the V8 is badass.

Had a 2015 Ttundra, traded for a brand new 2017 Tacoma, traded the Tacoma in 8 months later for a 2018 Tundra... if that tells ya anything

Same boat as you, the Tacoma was nowhere near big enough for me and the family. Not only that, I have always drove V8/diesel platforms. So needless to say that Tacoma drive train was an absolute fucking joke.

The final straw in the Tacoma for me was on a 2 lane country road one evening with my not even 1 year old boy in back in his carseat. I am driving north on this road and see a 3/4 SRW diesel coming my way. Sure enough it starts drifting into my lane. I squeezed the orange and prepared to make the decent into the right ditch when fuck stick put his phone down and got back into his lane. I decided right then and there I had to get back into a full size truck after picturing that 8k pound Duramax hitting my Tacoma head on at 60 MPH.

It had more "rated" payload right?
Last Saturday I had 10 90lb bags of concrete in the bed and 60 bags on the trailer. I would have never did that with the Tacoma, but the Tundra handled it no problem.

Yeah it bugs me the lack of storage especially with the crewmax that whole bump on the floor should be storage. Unfortunately it's a lease so I can't be cutting into the floor to install storage options.

My '08 Crewmax didn't have storage either but that was understandable since the back seats moved and reclined. I am surprised the new Crewmax's don't have any storage, but was pleasantly surprised at the fairly large stock storage vessel under my SR5 Double Cabs rear seat. So easy to remove also.

It's not going to give you the same use that the ESP stuff would, but one member found a cheap solution that you could use on your lease truck. https://www.tundras.com/threads/under-rear-seat-storage-for-crewmax.24021/

They claim it reduces damage to the parking structures from people backing in too far. Doubt that's true now that everyone has backup cameras and sonar. They absolutely write tickets for it too, usually warnings.

I really wanted a new Tacoma with the manual transmission. But then I sat in one and realized that my head hitting the headliner every time i go over a bump would not work.
It took me about 5 minutes driving the Tundra to be sold on the power, driving position, interior room, and the nice rumble from the TRD exhaust.

Yeah I'm thinking about putting on a trd exhaust or doing like my taco and putting a flowmaster 50 on it.

I'm in the same boat as you here. If I only saw this 3 years ago, I wouldn't have built my taco up so much. I really like what I did to it, but I feel so limited on longer trips where I want my family to be more comfortable.

Question for all: did anyone NOT get the extended range fuel tank? I kinda want a 6 passenger Tundra but wonder if the 10 gallons is a deal breaker...

My first truck was an 08 Tacoma Pre Runner and I loved it to death. Got it stock and tinkered with it for years,
Honestly I would have kept it if I was a smaller guy. I'm 6'2 270 and could barely fit - and if the bed was bigger.

The Tundra has more room (even the Double Cabs are extremely spacious), and the power of a 5.7 compared to a Tacoma... worth the hit to MPG.
My taco only got 18 Highway so I am okay with 15.3 on the Tundra. I drive from Reno to the Bay Area quite often and that alone was worth the comfort for me.

It's great having the bigger fuel tank, but not so great giving up the payload for it. Double edged sword.

Edit: my CM has the 38 gal tank

Close? It’s 74-0 Tundra. Are we looking at different polls?

I like the Tacoma. I almost bought one after owning my 1989 SR5 years ago, but they’re just too small for me... especially the back seat.

When I bought my 2015 Taco there was a big difference in money between the two. I paid $30,500 for my taco... The tundra was $42k at the time. After the third gen taco came in they went to 36k and the tundra stayed at the $42k. The taco just comes up short on space, power, and mileage. If it was pulling down 30mpg? If there was room for car seats, or adult humans in the back seat? Maybe. For me, my family, and my needs? Tundra was a no brainer. I will say the F150 and Ram interiors are sweet... It comes in handy when you are waiting for the wrecker to come and get you. Also the re-sale of a Toyota is still the best.

Ask the OP's question on a Tacoma forum and the vote would be 100% Tacoma.

I'll say it again, the problem with the taco is that my kids have legs. Even my 8 year old won't fit in that thing. And there isn't enough head room in the front. If there was enough room inside, I'd own one.

:oldglory:I had 2 newer Tacoma (15 & 17) I started to tow a TT with my 15 Sequoia it did a great job. Since it was my wife vehicle. I decided to sell the 17 Taco and get a 18 Tundra. I have towed the TT across country twice and the Tundra with the trailer break built-in was the best.
Both the Sequoia and the Tundra have the 5.7 liter engines.
