A.R.E. CX HD Camper Quote High?

Just got my quote back for an A.R.E. CX HD for my 2020 DC and about coughed up a lung. I know it’s Alaska but sheesh....tell me this isn’t high:

I just had a write up and it had the fold down front window, battery operated light, headliner, and a bedrug. The total was 2700 and change. That is in Texas. Included paint match.

 

That’s about right...labor should be free though not that it makes a difference in $100

 

60 dollars for a switch sounds about right? Not in my book.

 

But where are you going to store your $5/gallon milk? Your Alaskan; live in biggest state and pay the biggest prices...may as well check out those stainless steel RDS shells!

 

All of the shell prices seem insane to me really anyway but those seem crazy insane Alaska high too?

If you Google around a little you can find the MSRP of the ARE shell and see if they are giving you an extra ganking for location or not.I imagine that they do on all sorts of products all the time especially things that are big and need to be trucked in?

 

Not seeing shipping costs. Assuming quote total is delivered price to your topper dealer there. If not included then that quote is a bit pricey. Shipping for a topper to AK is several hundred dollars easy.

 

Was the quote generated by the 'build your own' feature on the ARE web page?
A.R.E. are not inexpensive... I almost had to give up a kidney to pay for my DCU

 

Get rid of all the options and not sure what a random $7.50 shop fee is.

You can add all those options yourself for a lot less. Just get the roof rack tracks when you order the cap

 

That quote is higher than what I was quoted in Canada in CAD.

 

That topper is large and heavy and air freight charge to AK would be nuts. Most large items like that end up on a shipping barge to Anchorage and truck freighted to the dealers' location. Slower but cheaper.

 

It does when you order it from ARE. It doesn’t when you see how inexpensive you can do it yourself. Quote is about right. Racks can be bought used pretty easily, buy landing pads on eBay for the truck.

OP, maybe get a quote from a place in BC or Alberta and see if it would be cheaper to get it shipped or drive down and get it after the border is open?

 

You are definitely getting charged full retail. I'd check on some other brands. ARE, LEER, Ranch and Century are all about the same quality. You might be able to step up to a SnugTop for that price. They are considered the best available.

 

I thought I heard Ranch was a bit worse than the others.

 

My local dealer said it's made in the same factory as a couple more popular lines, just re-badged under the Ranch name. He had a couple there. They looked pretty well made. I just got lucky and found a used SnugTop.

 

Check the highway map from AK to BC or even Alberta. Not sure where OP is in AK, but from Anchorage you have to drive north...repeat north, then take Glenn Allen Highway to Tok and head east to US/Canadian border to Beaver Creek, Yukon Territory and head south down the AL-Can highway to BC or head further east to Alberta. Nuts..Canuck gas tax prices would make that scenario prohibitive. I know. Been there...done that twice. I watched barge after barge heading up from Bremerton, WA going up to Cook Inlet to Anchorage. That's how it's done. Air Freight shipping is quite frankly nonsense for something like a topper. Now if the OP wants a beautiful vacation to see the wonders of the Yukon, and BC.....go for it. The OP can drop down to Bremerton and pick up the topper...then repeat going back "up". $$$$$$

 

Most topper window options are from the same supplier for example and are used on all topper brands....but there's still the getting the topper to AK.....

 

I just got a quote for the CX non hd, with 1 swing gate, roof rack, and bedrug, it was $4160 located in Montana. 5 to 6 week lead time.

 

The OP's quote is not out of whack at all. Toppers aren't cheap. That Bedrug is nice by the way!

 

Right they are crazy expensive!!! Looking forward to the bed rug, my knees will thank me. And it's nice to catch a nap on too

 

I will get a BedRug for my 14. Had one on my 07, forgot to take it out when I traded in my 07...
I got it near new off Craig'sList for $200

 

I just had them throw it in my quote, last one I did took me all day and it still didn't stick very goo . Least if they mess it up they'll have to fix it!!

 

Surface prep is so important with the BedRug 3M velcro. You can get adhesive enhancers to greatly improve your results.

 

It includes shipping to the closest ARE dealer (100 miles away).

 

Seems to be a huge drop off of new vs used. Not that it matters for me because nothing used on market up here.

 

When I showed my wife the quote, she gave a big HA!....then walked away.
