I would supercharge the v8 before attempting this conversion. If you still want a v6 turbo, then trade in a couple of years.

    I don't want a turbo engine, I want a normally aspirated fuel injected V8.

I would rather have V8. I just heard that either 2020 or 2021 is the last year for the V8 then they’re switching the twin turbo

I think you'll see that most everyone prefers the V8.

This. I mean, don't get me wrong - more HP/TQ is NEVER something we don't want. LOL But there's always tradeoffs.

Buddy of mine has the 2013 F150 EcoBoost; I had the 5.0L. He could definitely tow more/easier with the EcoBoost...but actually got WORSE mileage (not surprising) doing it. The only issue with the power I had wasn't the amount (though more is always better) - it was the lag time. Turns out I'd gotten a 5.0L with 3.31 gears.

Now I have the Tundra, which (on paper) has about 20 more HP/TQ, but ALSO has 4.30 gears and makes its power down lower, and it's a COMPLETELY different experience.

I wouldn't personally be opposed to a TT Tundra in the future, but even in a tried and true engine from another Lexus/Toyota, I'd still have to wait. Just because it has no issues in another vehicle doesn't mean it will have no issues in the Tundra - different vehicle, different utilization case. I'd have to wait at LEAST 3 years before even considering it.

Put the TTV6 in the lighter Tacoma, and keep the 5.7 in the heavier Tundra.

This. If anything, I'd prefer they modify the engine slightly to keep it NA but add 20-30 HP or so, like they did with the 5.0 in the F150.

Boys, I'm sorry to break it to you but V8 engines for non-commercial applications are a dying breed. At least the lack of a V8 option in the next Tundra will make ours worth a bit more, hopefully? :monocle:

I remember when they said the high performance V8 was dead back in the mid 1970's, never to return they said... they were wrong.

Not so sure about that. 2 of them for the Silverado, 1 for the F150, 1 for the Ram, and from what I hear, no plans to get rid of them anytime soon.

For sure. Soon is subjective though, I think in the next 5-10 years we'll see the death of gas engines in anything but 4cyl base models.

If Toyota wanted to really dominate truck sales..

bore and stroke the 5.7 to a 6.5 liter and make it in a quasi 3/4 ton.
    Diesel option
    Base engine 5.7 and 4.6
Put 3.5 in for fleet vehicles.

I personally don't hate it; but I do realize that it's not exactly 'rendering V8s obsolete' as many think they are. When I got my '13 F150, I went with the 5.0L V8 simply because '11's and '12's had had some issues with the Ecoboosts; and I figured less parts = less stuff to break.

Same justification for why I had no issues with buying a Tundra even though gas mileage ain't all that great...despite cam issues, the engine has been around for 13 years or so and is tried and true. It says a LOT that the engine/transmission are essentially the same units as they have been for a decade or more, and STILL shift better and are far smoother and produce more power than my F150 5.0L ever did.

But sound you'd get from a Chevy with a rat under the hood with a quadrajet carb with the lid flipped over.

The reliability of a Tundra is what sets it apart from EVERY other truck, going to a TT setup is going bring that reliability way down! There are just way too many moving parts and NOBODY has proven a way to get more than 125,000-150,000 miles at most out of a turbo before a full rebuild is needed.

If the new TTV6 comes with a hybrid system netting 30 mpg, is 400+ horsepower, and is tuned for low end torque... The truck will again set the bar like the tundra did in 2007.

I don't agree. I believe the motor will come from the Lexus ls500. It's very reliable. An there are some ford ecoboosts with 300,000 plus. Here is an article about a 200,000 mile f150 ecoboost. These are proving to be reliable

The badass 5.7 is why I traded in a sweet completely built 4Runner for a SR5 4x4 Tundra. The end of an era is near. Get them while you can
