Ok, so w/less than 45,000 mi. on my 2016 Tundra, the check engine light came on. Of coarse the first thing i did was check to make sure the gas cap was on correctly, check engine light still on. I drop it off at the dealership this am and they do a smoke test and tell me the gas cap is faulty and they found a leak in it. My question is..Shouldnt this be considered under warranty since it is part of the emission system? I paid for an extended warranty 8 yrs or 80,000 mi. They say not covered cause its not electrical or mechanical. I already have to pay the $150.00 diagnostic fee, what do you all say?

Always ask if the diagnostic and parts for a suspected problem are covered under warranty before approving any work. Get this in writing. What we think on here doesn't matter, what's written in the warranty and what they agree to in writing is all that does.

Ya, true that. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of my warranty w/me, and they can tell me whatever they want, and how am I to prove other wise. When they sell you the warranty and say bumper to bumper I would hope that they would cover the $30.00 gas cap. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful. I bought an extended warranty with the same trust once. Turned out "bumper to bumper" didn't cover the stereo, and though it did cover the steering rack that had to be replaced, but there was a $500 deductible that was not disclosed. I asked and the dealer said any repairs wouldn't cost me anything. It sucked, but I learned to never trust a dealership. I ask very specific questions about warranties and make them show me in the paperwork where it states exactly what they are claiming. If it's not in clear non-legalese, I won't touch it.

One thing you can do is get them to pull up your warranty paperwork. They have to have it on file. Then you can go through it, and if you don't like the warranty at this point in time, you can make them refund the remainder of it. The threat of that might be enough to get them to wave the diagnostics, buy the cap, and then you can cancel it when you get home anyway.

$150 to hook up a scan gauge on a truck under warranty. Pretty lame if you ask me, I’d fight that one.

As for the gas cap I’d probably just eat that cost and walk to the parts counter.

Well, just as I figured. She says no warranty will cover the gas cap and or the $150.00 diagnostic fee, it only goes towards the repair if needed. She couldn't even pull up my extended warranty, said there are so many different 3rd party warranties and not all are in the system. So now, i go home and find my paperwork to call said 3rd party and find out. Oh well, at least is wasn't anything major.

I would have said "If you don't have my warranty on file how do you know what is covered?"

I'm a dick though. Bummer for you. I'd be for going over that warranty paperwork with a fine tooth comb to see if there's a deductible and exactly what's covered. If you don't like anything you find, get the refund on the warranty.
