I am planning to change my career from medical to becoming a Police Officer.

I have searched and now I'm wondering is it faster to get the 6p college credits or take the P.O.S.T. Classes? Any suggestions would help tremendously

    Thank you

^^ all are great for additional points, but will depend on dept cost for academy and how the testing is broken down.
Most departments prefer POST candidates as it saves the dept money and waiting time

Yes a lot of places I've been looking at all said at least a Class A POST and that runs around $6700. Is there any programs/scholorships or grants that will help with this cost?

Thanks...I've been talking to my brother in law about this also he's the chief of police in a near by town but he's always too busy for me to actually ask him questions...so I figured there's a few officers here so might as well get some pointers...

Good luck and the best to you and the new found calling.

You will need a lot of character references, so have that planned out.

Also start gathering all of your previous addresses, roommates names and contact info, old jobs, high school and college transcripts (official ones, not copies), the fore mentioned references. The background checks are super detailed. I'm not sure if they check into social media stuff now too, maybe get rid of any questionable posts.

Also contact some recruiters for the departments you're interested in. Part of a recruiters "job" (who are sworn, patrol officers) are to help guide you

Choose your department first and decide what you need. Some agencies will train you and pay for your POST cert. Some require no college.

Contact your local department and try to think of who you might know. When I went, the local PD sponsored me. Immediately they made us delete our social media before the academy even started. They were doing us a favor for sure.

Like they said above, contact your local department. My brother got sponsored and they sent him to the community college for the course. He got paid to go and they covered the cost of school. Can't argue with that.

Here's something u need to remember - being sponsored through that academy - pay is going to be lower than it is when out of the academy.
If you sponsor yourself- many offer p/t classes so you can continue your full-time job/career.

The academy around here REQUIRES you to be sponsored to even get in

Same here in Maine, Joe. Need sponsorship for either the reserve officer school or the full time academy.

Good luck to you, Rick. I did twelve years myself. It is an amazing career for someone with the passion for it. I'm not that familiar with California rules for officers, but from what I've read, the POST classes seem like they'd be your best bet.

As stated above, talk to recruiters, see what they look for. Ride alongs are a great idea. Hours of boredom broken up by minutes of sheer terror. Be yourself. Stick to your ethics and morals. Treat others with respect until they give you a reason not to. Hands, hands, hands (that will make sense soon). I used to teach at the academy too. Absorb that stuff. Listen to everything they have to say. You'll never be in the exact position, but draw from each of the other officer's experiences to make good decisions when you're in a tight spot.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and helpful suggestions. I was keep everything in mind. I have done many ride alongs they were either a basic day with traffic stops to a gun fire which ended bad for the suspect. And after seeing what nt through I still want to be an officer. To serve and protect is what I want to do. I currently live in missouri and as of right now I'm saving for the POST classes. I'm think of doing full time in July-July-Dec but I still have to talk to my family about it first because if I did full time I'll be gone a lot and busy but all the major holidays and birthdays will not be missed because the are all in the first 6 mo.

Thank you everyone for your helpful tips

And know where you are at all times.
Walk along the sides of a wall
Stay out the tunnel of death..funny- when I go to a friends or family members house, I still knock and stand to the side or next to a pillar.
When out a movie, restaurant, etc know where a second and third exit is
    Watch your mirrors when parked
Sit with your back to walls
Watch entrances/exits when out and about dining

I can go on and on..as others can, I'm sure.

So where are you wanting to be a Police Officer? When I resided in CA (seen you are by Visalia), I would ride along a lot with the local PD and Sheriff Dept to see what this life was all about. Hanford was rated one of the roughest places in CA.

Only other thing I can add to this thread is this:

My neighbor across the street wants to be a Police Officer. He is a retired Marine and has plenty of experience through the military. Several departments have knocked on my door and discussed this person and asked many questions. The one thing that most likely buried his chances is what was hanging on his front door. Someone tried to break into his house, never got in and he took it upon himself to hang a large silhouette target of a human with some bullet holes in it. A rather nice inscription at the bottom "these were shot at 30 yards. If you can read this, you're within 15."

Funny, and he is a great shot. However, every detective investigating him said something about it and pretty much frowned on it. I told him he should remove it. He has since done that, but hasn't had any departments offer a position yet. All about perception at this point. I thought he would be an ace in the hole: retired military, combat experience, instructor, great shape, good attitude....guess they are looking for more.

Yes, they do. Just for my volunteer position I had to go thru background checks, psych eval and bunch of interviews with PD. All that I can't even carry weapons. They are not looking for saints, they just don't want liars and people whose believes and behavior will carry into the job. So I can see where that would raise a red flag for the PD.

Thank you everyone for your input I have just registered for my Class A POST and will be starting in Aug. I'm going to do part time so I can still work full time. The local PD does not do sponsorships so I'm paying it out of pocket but that is ok just a small price to pay to finally do something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Downside no modifications for awhile but that's ok on to a career that I'll be passionate about.
